We were saying the opposite when guys like Anthony "Stone Hands" Becht and Ben Hartsock were doing an awesome job blocking at the line. justsayin

I was going to include all of them in my post and why I said "complete" TE. On one side of the list we have Johnny Mitchell and his group and on the other side we have Becht and his group. I'd like us to grab a TE that can secure the ball and move forward with it AND at least manage to keep his block. I know how hard it is to find guys that can do everything , but it feels like we aren't even trying. But alot of what we can do is predicated on the O line. If we can get them working the TE can be less of a blocker, but right now, IMHO, its like 60/40 catch/block for whatever TE we get, but my thoughts on this again are based on our shoddy o line, QB, and other TE's. If we keep Cumberland that gives us a TE who isn't a great blocker and Suds who is more of a blocker and best kept as a 3, for now at least.

I think this is a great move. If healthy and full time starter I think he's going to be excellent.

I don't mind bringing Cumberland back. He's still young and has room to grow. I want to upgrade the position though.

On a side note i'd be interested in bringing back Winslow as well. He's still very productive. He gets open and catches the ball when it's thrown to him. We need guys like that.

He was more productive then Cumberland and he did it with half the snaps...

    Let Winslow beat it elsewhere.

He fills a need as long as that need isn't a #1 TE. Nice complimentary piece...

Not sure why people are relegating Cumberland to #2 status as though he's some aging vet with no upside. The kid is 26 and hasn't been playing TE that long. He's yet to hit his ceiling. I don't see why he shouldn't be competing for the starting job. For those complaining about his blocking, Cumberland is not any worse a blocker than any of the top receiving TEs. A TE that can stretch the field and block a good pass rushing DE one on one is a mythical creature that most teams to not waste time chasing. He was the best blocking TE on a team that was 6th in rushing and the guy we kept in when we needed extra protection. Blocking should be near the bottom of the list of items Cumberland can stand to improve on.

I'm just curious about the amount and length.

he made just over a million last year, so i'm guessing theres an increase involved, probably to at least two mill next season with an increasing number afterwards. To what extent depends on just how much they think he can prosper in this offense.

Personally I think he's just an average receiving tight end without much blocking prowess (would love a guy like Troy Niklas in the third to help with that) so I'm not thinking he's owed more than an average of 3 mil a year on average.

Imma guess: 3 years 9 million give or take with 3 and half guaranteed over the first two years.

I was surprised to read he caught only 26 passes last season.
He does show flashes, though. And, at the right price, i'd be thrilled to have him back on the Jets.

Does anyone see him becoming a fifty-plus catch receiver ever? I think thats a key. Does he have the upside to make a longterm committment turn into great value? I think so, but curious to hear what others think.

If he can stay healthy, probably yes, unless the Jets do get Ebron and a couple of very good WRs this off season, in which case Cumberland may never get the opportunity to catch that many passes.

yup, while the team should almost always look for upgrades we can't throw away everybody who's not a pro-bowler.

Even if the Jets got Ebron he'd still have to have time to adjust to the NFL, and should he get hurt we have to rely on who exactly? Sudfeld?

at worse we have a capable if average holdover till a prospect with a higher ceiling can take over, at best a player thats turned a corner for a second class price for a few years.

just a matter of costs, getting another look at what other TE's got I may have lowballed that cost at 3 million a year. probably closer to 4, but still its probably in appreciating costs. Think 3 million, 4 million, 5 million, and depending on how condfident they are of him another year at 5 mil give or take for all.

of course those last years are unguaranteed and make him easy to cut, or a steal if he's awesome after all.

An important re-signing for the Jets. His only problem has been injuries. So I hope we sign Cumberland and draft one or two TEs.

I'd take Winslow back if I had the choice, but Cumberland has more upside and can be a decent #2.

Cumberland is a fine young player. He'd look better with better QB play. Giving him a new deal is a good idea. He's not an all-pro, but guys like him are the types of players you need to win the big one. Complementary players that play at a level above their contract.
