Would love the Ebron pick, then if he's not there and Evans is gone , Amero. I feel we can't lose out in round 1
Cumberland is a fa so u can't even count him as a definite to be back next year. That means te is an even bigger need than youre saying! If Ebron is there when we pick its almost 100% that's he's the best available player. So unless a team calls us with an offer that we can't refuse, I'd take him. I know a lot of people on here are gunshy about picking a te in the 1st, especially considering our history with drafting 1st round tes, but i'd kill to have that type of weapon that can stretch the inside of the field and draw the safeties off our wrs. Itd open so many plays to the outside, and it'd help out run game cause defenses wouldn't be able to put 8 in the box against us. Then if we resign cumberland hed be playing a backup role, which is right where his talent says he should be playing.
We need a legit WR threat on the outside for any TE to take advantage of the middle of the field. The problem imo is our top WR's in recent years have been best working the middle. Gets kind of crowded in between the hash marks if there's no one open on the outside. That being said I love Ebron as a prospect just because he is a capable blocker according to scouting reports. He very well might wind up being the best available player. Also there should be plenty of quality WR prospects available in the 2nd round.
Excellent point. That's one of the reasons why I think those who are saying we need an elite TE and that is more important than having an elite WR are wrong. I've also read an article recently saying that because Ebron is smaller, he may not be able to take the steady pounding over the middle that prototypical TEs do. I think that is a fair point as well. I think I remember reading somewhere too that on average, TEs have a shorter career than players at most other positions because of all the wear and tear and pounding they take. Many have compared Ebron to Vernon Davis and I think that is an apt comparison. I like Davis a lot, but if I'm not mistaken, he has had a problem with staying nicked up. Even if not, I'm not sure it's wise to invest our #1 pick in a guy that may not have that long of a career due to the pounding he's going to take. A WR who would take less pounding and physical abuse could benefit the team over a longer period of time. For my starting TE, I'd rather have someone like Fiedorowicz or Pettigrew, someone with prototypical size that's a better blocker. Then when I ran a 2 TE set, it would be fine to have a TE who is mostly a receiver. I don't think that #2 TE should be a #1 pick, however. Maybe a 2nd round pick or lower, but not a 1st.
I know most people will hate this, but I would rather go for Mike Evans (if available). Ebron is a freak athlete, but he does have some drops. http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/46280/349/peshek-te-metrics Don't get me wrong, I would not be disappointed or mad if we took Ebron. I would just rather go for Mike Evans/Travis Benjamin in Round 1 and go for ASJ or Richard Rogers in Round 2.
I agree with your thought process here of getting the WR first and the TE later, with the exception of Benjamin at #18. I think that's too high for him. I'd be happy I think with S-J in round 2. Round 2 for Rogers? CBS Sports currently has him rated as a 6-7th round pick. Nowhere have I seen Rogers rated anywhere near that high. ProFootballScout.com at FoxSports doesn't even have him listed as one of their top 8 TEs. Have you seen him rated that highly somewhere?
Nope, I never heard of Rogers until this article. So it would be better not to take him until later if he got a 6-7 round grade. I love ASJ though, hes not going to run for 75 yards, but he will make the catch. And catches is what this offense needs.
this team needs playmakers regardless of position. wr,te,rb it does not matter. if ebron is the BPA i hope idzick takes him. i hope he doesn't take a lesser wr because he is valuing the position over the player. a t.e.can be the focal point of an offense just as much as a #1 wr. just get a guy that has to have coverage rolled towards him and it will open up the other receivers.
That I'll agree with. I wouldn't want him to reach for a WR instead of taking Ebron. The first pick needs to be bpa.
I'm a huge Ebron fan and realistically after a great combine performance I'm expecting this weekend, he will be out of reach at #18. The Jets would have had to lose to Miami and have a 7-9 record to have a chance. ASJ or Niklas could be an option in rd 2 & 3.
I think I may actually prefer that, even if it means the Jets take Lewan or a defensive player in the first. I really want a two-way TE with more prototypical size.
Sucks, but would love Ebron too. Since it appears Cumberland is coming back, you have to pair him up with someone that can block consistently. ASJ would be nice or C.j. Fiedorowicz in the 2nd or 3rd.
That's the thing imo. The Jets MUST have a 2-way TE. The offense just gets too predictable when the D knows they either don't have to worry about either the TE catching a pass or blocking. If the Jets sign Cumberland, and Ebron does fall to them and they take him, even though he's a decent blocker, imo the Jets still need to get a TE who is an exellent blocker to pair with Ebron or Cumberland . Since ASJ, Fiedorowicz and Niklas are supposed to be better blockers than Ebron, I really think I'd rather have one of them. I have zero interest in Jace Amaro. None.
I think Baltimore will take him at 17. But a receiver group of Ebron Decker Hill and J.K would be a hugh improvement.
No chance of getting him at 18. I think he is gonna have a great combine and will go top 15. We wont get him unless we trade up, but if we did trade i would want to try and get sammy or maybe even Manziel/ Bridgewater. I would still be happy with Geno though.
It would be a mistake. The kid compares himself to Vernon Davis. VD ran a 4.4 and didn't break out until his 4th year. Gronk had 8 TDs his rookie year. But Jimmy Graham barely played in his. To believe he will be as good as those guys is wishful thinking in my opinion. And history at that position shows that even if he does prove worthy you won't get much production in the first year. I admit Ebron looks good on tape. But this team needs an impact playmaker for '14 in the worst way. I would rather take Marqise Lee, say, at 18 and then target Seferian-Jenkins as a value pick with upside in the 3rd or 4th or later.
