Figured everyone would appreciate the Jets bringing some diversity to the coaching staff as an intern.

You never know he could be one of the people who could see it but was not quick enough to actually do it in person.

I will never understand the eric Smith hate, you act like he was Bubby Brister. He had some bad moments but he had a lot of good moments too.

Good point, let's hope so. I mean he's only an interim anyway.

More bad then good. I really liked him on Special Teams though.

Just to add to the thread, Tony Sparano Jr promoted to Offensive Asst. Who knew? Be honest!

    http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...ns-Staff/8eb591e2-79f9-40cb-8f0b-e6bc39777d19

Rex Ryan’s coaching staff continues to take shape with two moves announced this morning. Tony Sparano Jr. has been promoted to offensive assistant, while former Jets safety Eric Smith will serve as a seasonal intern.

Sparano, 27, has been with us as a seasonal intern since 2012. He played defensive end at the University of Albany from 2006-09 before beginning his coaching career with the UFL’s Hartford Colonials (assistant defensive line, 2010). Before coming to the Jets he was an offensive quality control coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2011.

His father, Tony Sparano, served as our offensive coordinator in 2012 and is currently the assistant head coach/offensive line coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Smith will begin his coaching career for the same team with which he began his professional playing career. The Jets selected him in the third round (97th overall) of the 2006 draft, and he remained with the team until he was released last February.

In his seven seasons with the Green & White, Smith recorded six interceptions and 3.5 sacks. The 6’1”, 209-pound Michigan State product started 36 of his 96 NFL games and was a major special teams contributor as well.

Aside from the promotion of Sparano and the hiring of Smith, Ryan’s staff has undergone a few other changes this offseason. Thomas McGaughey replaced Ben Kotwica as our special teams coordinator and Bobby April III replaced Brian VanGorder as our linebackers coach.

I hope he has zero influence on any aspect of any offense that plays football in the Tri-State area...

One of my favorite plays from the 2010 playoff win over NE was his hit on Welker blasting off a piece of Welker's helmet.

Tried to post the youtube clip but can't figure out how to do it.

I believe it was actually the decal from the helmet.

Smith was HUGE for us in that game and in that title game run after Leonhard got hurt.

Eric Smith is actually extremely smart everyone just hates him for his lack of coverage skills. But he was a great tackler

Hopefully he's not coaching "angle of pursuit" drills.

Did Eric Smith take over for Jimmy in setting and calling the D when he went down, or did David Harris do it? Eric Smith was also our ST guy on punt protection I believe. I don't mind him coaching. He was much better as a DB dropping into the box to run blitz or apply pressure. Coverage and pursuit angles were his weakness

Certainly odd, Smith isn't still playing, just knowing he's on the coaching staff turns my stomach

Eric Allen is annoying. He did put a couple really good WR's on a stretcher though
