He was a terrible coach and made some draft blunders but he brought in a lot of talent that helped us reach the '98 title game and beyond. BB and Kraft connected in 1996, that was going to happen regardless what else happened here. If we don't get BP I don't think it changes BB eventually going to NE.
Since we are reminiscing of the disaster of the Kotite era. The real amazing only Jets luck part of it is that we had the #1 pick two years in a row without a franchise caliber QB in them. How in the world does that happen? Yes I understand that Peyton chose to stay in school but still.
If Parcells would have committed to Peyton he would have come out. He didn't, peyton went back to school.
Yeah I know that's what the rumor is/was, which I have a hard time believing but that is besides the point. The point remains that the two years in a row that Jets had the 1st pick were two of a very small amount of years that there wasn't a QB worthy of going #1 overall.
There would have been if not for BP. as great of a job as BP did for us bringing us out of the dark ages he cost us Peyton, Belichick and Brady.
You know now that I am thinking about it, this rumor seems like complete BS. Unless the process for declaring has changed since then, I can't really remember that far back, the timing is off. Take this year for example, the deadline for underclassmen was January 15th, even if it was in the ballpark in 1997 Parcells would have still been HC of NE and preparing for SB. Not that it matters anymore but I am curious at this point. Does anyone with a better memory than me know if the process for underclassmen has changed since then. Parcells didn't become HC of Jets until at least mid February and I would think they would have had to declare by then.
I was present at Kotites first game as Head coach. 52-14 drubbing to the Fins. It's was hard rooting for this team but I still wore my Jets gear. Living in Texas at the time it was no joy as you could just see people smirk and try to hold their laughter as you walked by. I was shocked when they let Carrol go and floored when I saw Kotite knowing that it was going to be a rough road ahead.
I don't know what the deadline was back then but I know BP was our HC at the time and the story was reported at the time and has been since. http://www.nytimes.com/1997/04/16/sports/manning-may-have-been-waiting-for-sign-from-the-jets.html
most of the talent was already there prior to 95.... of course he added johnson as the first pick but u could've been in a coma all spring and woke up the day before and drafted him.
players acquired under Kotite that helped us after Rich left: Kyle Brady Chad Cascadden Wayne Chrebet Hugh Douglas Matt O'Dwyer Jumbo Elliott Ray Mickens Marcus Coleman Bobby Hamilton Keyshawn Johnson Chris Hayes in 2 years that's not bad and it doesn't count guys like O'Donnell, Graham, etc...
I'd have a lot more respect for Pete Carroll if he didn't high-tail it out of USC right when the shit hit the fan. Reggie Bush "loses" his Heisman but Pete gets to escape to the NFL and avoid any responsibility for apparent violations that took place under his watch? Lame.
didn't Reggie Bush get to go to the NFL as well? Reggie Bush losing the Heisman is an NCAA punishment and either him or Carroll going to the NFL has zero to do with any NCAA punishment.
My memory might be a little foggy, but didn't parcells run Hugh Douglas out of town? I think he did fairly well with the Eagles after we let him go too. That was one of my biggest gripes with BP, he was a shitty GM and he never had the patience to develop younger players. Especially at qb like u said in an earlier post. He was great motivating vets like Brian Cox, but the players he drafted never seemed to work out.
Yep, gave him away for nothing. He did a terrible job w/ the draft but a good job w/ FA. bringing in Curtis and Mawae then getting lucky w/ bargain FAs like Vinny & Cox.
It really pisses me off that we fired Pete Carroll. I loved him when he was here. And Carroll is an even better DC than Ryan. If we had stuck with him, the sky is the limit. But this is typical Jets.
Parcells could not commit to Peyton when he was at Tennessee because Peyton was still a college player.
