Interview with Cimini posted on Twitter http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/super-bowl/post/_/id/504/29-days-qa-with-woody-johnson
I'm in college and unfortunately I live with a fish fan. He will not stop complaining about the Super Bowl being held in NJ. "It's going to be so cold, supposed to rain/snow, players should be playing in the best conditions" blah blah blah wah wah wah. What do you guys think about this? I know we are a little biased as it's in our stadium, but IMHO It's football... it's meant to be played in any condition, and i don't think it's necessary to restrict the location to cities or stadiums with predictable/controlled conditions.
Your roommate is correct. The Super Bowl should be played in the best conditions available and in a city that the average fan wants to vacation to at the beginning of February. The Super Bowl should not be a participation trophy for building a new stadium (particularly one without a roof in the northeast).
True, the Super Bowl is a business party of sorts. I'm sure the fans of each team don't mind what the weather is, but I can definitely see why people that "go just to go" would have a problem with it. I wonder what the players think.
All regular season teams deal with playing in the weather. It is part of what determines who makes the playoffs. All post season teams deal with playing in the weather. It's part of what determines who makes the superbowl. Why do we have this weird need to remove the weather from the superbowl again?
Because if you can increase the likelihood of perfect playing conditions, you should. It's the same reason they don't hose down the court at MSG occasionally and tell the two teams: "We're just mixing it up and making you deal with the elements." The point of the game isn't to deal with the elements; the point of the game is to perform better than the other team. The elements are a "necessary" evil required by the necessity of each home team getting home games and inability to play indoors - the problem is, it's not "necessary" anymore and it's never been necessary regarding the Super Bowl.
Basketball isn't a game that ever deals with the elements though. The weather is a part of football. It's not about just mixing it up to make them deal with the elements, it's playing the game in it's natural environment as it's done the entire season and post season.
I don't see a big deal with playing the game in the elements other than it diminishing the fan experience. But I don't ever plan on going so I couldn't care less
I love watching games in the elements - I wish their was a snowstorm on tap. It could make for an epic superbowl.
You've got to look at "the Super Bowl" as more than a game. It's a week long party - and what better place to party than NYC? As far as the game goes, I went to a Gray Cup in Winnipeg. The SB will be a lot warmer, but heck, even that was a lot of fun!
We let weather determine everything leading up to the SB, I don't see a problem with the weather impacting a game in the SB. I mean we had a rain SB relatively recently. How come nobody complains it can rain? Isn't that the same thing?
the superbowl SHOULD be played in the home stadium of hte team with the better record. BUTTTTT since there is no way in hell that would ever happen as they plan for this game for months and months. then fuck it lets play it in every stadium, just because the bills suck and the ralph is a shit hole in a shit hole town should not make them any less of a spot than anywhere else.
95% of the 'fans' attending the SB and the week long pre-parties are the mega-rich who haven't been to or even watched a game since the last SB. Fuck em. Hope it sleets the whole week except for the SB when it's 10 below and too cold to sleet. Lets see the 5000 Lear jets overrunning the airports get frozen to the tarmac.
I believe that the SB being the ultimate showcase for the NFL should be played in non weather influential conditions. As far as who can afford tickets to this event Being the 1%ers let them freeze. Can someone please tell me why this place does not have a roof, think about it, with a roof you can have a final four in college basketball, you probably someday can have the final game in college football, these two events alone could probably generate enough income to pay for the roof. Drudge Report is stating ticket prices are on a downward spiral, not hard to figure out why.
Im sorry but watching sporting events in a closed dome, especially football, kind of sucks. Yes, cold wind sleet and snow suck too so i'd be willing to compromise on a retractable roof as long as it's open until the end of December. I liked the old Dallas stadium where the seats were covered but the field was wide open.
