Just watched the HBO sports show starring Bryant Gumbel featuring Boomer and his son . I have a new respect for Mr.Esiason .
That was a great show. Amazing what he has done for that fight and the foundation he has built. I loved the point about the cross-marketing, how every endorsement deal he ever signed after his son was diagnosed required the sponsor to contribute to the cause in some way. A very powerful tool. _
I couldn't stand Boomer when he was in college or when he went to the Bengals, but when he came to the Jets, I read several stories about his son's illness and all that Boomer is doing to keep him healthy and alive, and developed a true respect and fondness for Boomer.
Love Boomer/Hate Carton so I can't listen to the show in the morning, I listen to Howard for laughter, not that 2 bit piece of crap. Besides, its commercials with a little talk sprinkled in. He is a real nice human being,
I lost my best friend to CF so I know all the good Boomer has done for this horrible disease. If I remember the story correctly Boomer had originally started his foundation to raise money for awareness for arthritis but changed it to CF when a friends daughter was diagnosed with CF..... in a cruel twist of fate Boomer's son Gunnar would later be diagnosed with CF. I will never forget what my friend went through, guy passed away about 2 years ago and I used to watch him with his nebulizer and all sorts of breathing devices. It's a horrible, slow painful death but one that isn't always talked about in the news.
Ugh Howard has become so awful he is unlistenable. The guy is a shell of him former self and has to be the most overpaid person in entertainment. I really dont get why people still listen to him.
It was Frank DeFord's daughter, the SI writer. That was an eye-opener to me watching the Real Sports story, and so ironic. Boomer was at an event where Frank DeFord was one of the speakers, and he spoke about losing his daughter to CF. It moved Boomer to help the cause, not knowing of course his son would later be born with the same disease. In many ways, his sons' illness has driven Boomer to quite a career beyond football, and of course to help so many people. I don't know if he'd be as driven in all that he does if not for that fact.
Deford is an interesting guy and I remember when his daughter died. There was a movie about his daughter's death with Craig T. Nelson as Deford. A real tear-jerker. Have always liked Boomer but that show puts him in even a better light. _
Count me among the Boomer Esiason fans. I'm always interested to hear his take on things as an analyst.
agree mostly about boomer - he is a gamer off the field and its quite admirable what he has done for his son and overall awareness of CF..... that being said - on the field - i never thought of him as a top flight QB, at least not in the marino, moon, kelly, elway class. he did have a couple real good years (MVP) but i think that was as much a function of his offense around him as much as his own talent. but he sure does think of himslef as a top shelf QB.
hmm i had no idea, i just assumed that boomer was all into the cf stuff because of his son. never realized he was into it, i am sure not to the same extent, before his son. thats a pretty amazing story.
