Given that scenario I would love to see a trade back to the end of the 1st round. But then again quite a lot of other teams likely will want to do the same.
I'm pretty sure that Hundley will stay in school. The same goes for Bortles. If the draft fell that way with the exception of those two teams, depending upon whom they took, I'd probably want to trade down. It would depend on if Amaro, Matthews, Benjamin, Seferian-Jenkins and Mosley were still there. If all were still there and I had them rated more or less equally, then I'd take Amaro or Seferian-Jenkins unless I had one of the other players ranked significantly higher. If I didn't have any of the players listed ranked as high as the 18th pick and I couldn't trade down into lower in the 1st round, then I'd try to completely trade out of the 1st and try to move down into the top of the 2nd round. I'm not that high on Dix or Kouandjio. I don't know anything about the two OTs that are there. Unless they cut Cro, taking a CB that high wouldn't really help the team in 2014, but could thereafter. It wouldn't be popular with the fan base at all. I've seen mixed reviews on Beasley. Unless the Jets think he can convert to OLB and be a great player for them, I wouldn't want them to take him over one of the TEs or Matthews, unless they just had him rated that much higher. If the draft does fall that way, I would not be very happy. The Ravens would greatly improve adding Lee, and so would the Steelers in adding Ebron. Adding a D player for the Jets wouldn't help them all that much. I think Idzik would have to take either Amaro, Seferian-Jenkins or Matthews even if he had other players rated more highly, and just have to pray that they would be great players for the Jets. They have to upgrade their offense.
Admittedly, I've only seen Amaro once, but I've seen Ebron a number of times, and based on that limited sample, there's no way that Amaro is more fluid than Ebron. Amaro moved faster than I thought he would, but imo he looked anything but fluid. He looked even a little ungainly, not fully coordinated to me. How is Ebron a project? I just don't see that at all. The only knock on him is he loses focus sometimes and drops easy catches. He's not only an amazing athlete and physical specimen, but excellent football player and has great hands. I've seen him make some incredible one-handed catches.
This is an early mock draft.. I will update it once everyone declares their status. I can see Dallas maybe taking Dix if Hundley isn't there... Their parched at safety! Maybe they take Dix and Aaron Murray in the 2nd
Ebron has made some great catches this year, no argument there. However if you watch him play he seems like he's fast in straight line speed, but not football quick. Amaro looks a little quicker to me in terms of turning up field after he catches the ball. He's also got great size, a few inches taller than Ebron, very long and that will help him win a lot of battles. Huge red zone target.
I really like Matthews, his big knock is he might not be able to create seperation at the next level but I look at his production and the competition he played against and think his speed or lack there of isn't a reason to not draft him.
This is actually what I was thinking if Ifo Ekpre Olomu was picked up in the first round. In 2015, Cro is either playing FS or cut. Either way, a nice chuck of salary cap gets freed up because Jets have two starting CB on rookie deals. If Kyle Wilson is resigned, he won't get a lot. This will give Jets 3 solid CB for very low salary combined. Hopefully, that can translate to something good through Free Agency.
I've been thinking about what to do if the big 3 WR and top two TE are gone. It's easy to say trade down, but what's on the board to make other teams want to trade up? I think Jets will simply be stuck in their slot. Which will force them to grab somebody who we think should have been picked ending 1st or early 2nd round.
I dont really see Matthews as a first round pick. He's solid in all areas, but not really special in any. Its not a real knock, but I just dont see 1st round talent. In comparison, Hopkins or Patterson last year were late 1st round picks, and I see them as better prospects by a decent amount (and this WR class is much better than last years). Id love him in the 2nd though.
I have no idea what your seeing Ebron is the better TE and I rank Seferian-Jenkins higher than Amaro people forget how good ASJ is because he has Price for a QB and plays out west he might turn out to be the best TE coming out of this draft. I'll tell you if the Pats draft ASJ he will kill us for 10 years. Btw Amaro is 6'5" Ebron is 6'4" huge difference.
"I'm pretty sure that Hundley will stay in school. The same goes for Bortles." Hundley staying @ UCLA, Bortles declared himself for the draft.
I'm truly surprised that Bortles declared for the draft. I think if he had stayed in school one more year, unless Jameis Winston enters the draft after his sophomore year, there's a very good chance he (Bortles) would have been not only the first QB taken, but quite like the first player chosen in the draft. Even if Winston entered the draft, Bortles still would have probably been the #2 pick or at least a top 5 (unless he had a terrible year next year), whereas this year, he might be a top 10-15 pick, or could fall to the 2nd round. I hope it works out for him (and for us, in that he causes a great prospect to drop to us).
