I agree with everything you said, except for that I wouldn't bring Ed Reed back. Antonio Allen is ready to start. If Reed wants to except a lesser role, then he can come back, but I would not bring him back as a starter.
He did his job well. But he was more a product of the Jets amazing D-Line. Barnes is the guy i'd like to see play behind that D-Line, Coples as well. I have no problem bringing Pace back but not for any significant money.
Just nice to see that there is no-one there where you thinking "if we don't manage to hold onto this guy we are screwed!"
jeff cumberland doesn't deserve a spot on this team, he just hasn't been very good. i'd definitely prefer winslow over him, guy is a warrior lankster and trufant are good CBs i'd like back and aaron berry is a talented player i'd like
Sorry, but you're flat out wrong. He has been a very good and consistent kicker for the Jets. He deserves to be signed long term.
Folk isn't the kind of guy to consistently be around 100% accuracy but he's reliable in the clutch. Ending of every season & every year in the playoffs there's teams that play their hearts out and left packing their bags because their kicker failed in a big spot. You don't let clutch kickers walk away when they can be locked up cheap. Folk deserves a multi-year deal. It's not going to be anything crazy like 5M a season. Locking him up for 2-3 seasons is gonna have small impact on the salary cap.
As usual, we see things very differently. There's no way I'd bring back Reed. He's the past. If he wants to be an asst. DB coach, fine, otherwise, good bye. He should never have been signed in the first place. Signing him only functioned to hinder/delay Allen's development. He'd be my first player cut. Howard and Folk we do agree on. Douzable deserves better than a 1-yr. vet min deal. He has been a very solid backup for the Jets. I'd sign him to a 2-3 year deal. Cumberland deserves to be kept at higher than the vet minimum and for only one year. If nothing else, he'd be the backup TE, and possibly even the starter. Aaron Berry was looking very good in TC and I think preseason before he was injured. There's no reason to send him packing. He was one of the Jets better CBs this spring. Mauga has been a pretty good STer and backup LB. If he can be upgraded, fine, otherwise, he should be retained. The same goes for Lankster. The Jets have enough holes without creating more cutting players who have been decent for the Jets. If he'll stay for the vet minimum, great, if not bump his salary up a little. Colon I'd keep around for the vet minimum or a little above if his spot can't be upgraded. I've never been a fan of Pace and didn't want him back this year. In spite of that he had a good year. He earned a shot to come back with a slight raise. Again, hopefully the Jets can replace him and upgrade his spot, but as insurance, I'd bring him back for a little above the vet minimum.
Haha yes! The Kurt Angle suplex! Sign this man! Did he get a flag for that? Even though Wilkerson isn't a free agent, he deserves a multi year extension. That should be #1 priority over all else. Most of the people on the list won't require big money to stay, so most should be retained. I'd like to keep Reed to help mentor Allen and the FS we draft this year. Ducasse will be gone along with Hilliard, Cunningham and Garrard. Everyone else should be brought back for cheap except maybe Howard & Folk, who should get multi year deals.
QB #2 and #3 - Vick, Schaub, Murray, Fales, Mettenberger Third down back - McFadden, Deanthony Thomas, Charles Sims, Bishop Sankey WR - Evans, Lee, Maclin, Decker, Matthews, Blackmon, Edleman TE - Graham ( ain't happening), Finley, Amaro, Ebron, ASJ, Pettigrew, Keller lol OL - Slauson lol, Oher, incognito lol, mid round, late round DL - please for the love of god not another first round pick LB - Orakpo, VAN NOY (please fall to second round) CB - Grimes, Talib, Tillman, late round S- Byrd, Whitner, Ihedigbo (should still be here), Lowery, late round P- MY TOP WANT PAT MCAFEE dude is a boss!!!!
When I wrote short term contracts I meant it to capture multiple facets (vet min, 1 yr deal with incentives, or 2-3 yr deals with small guaranteed money), not just the vet minimum. We obviously differ on Reed. I still think he has value as a 2nd string player.
Hall of Famers don't tend to be happy being 2nd stringers. Austin Howard - sign, don't go crazy, if not on the cheap let walk Jeff Cumberland - sign 2-3 years Willie Colon - let go Calvin Pace - let go David Garrard -let go Ed Reed - let go - let go Kellen Winslow - let go Josh Cribbs - let go Nick Folk - sign 2 to 4 years Vladimir Ducasse - let go Josh Mauga let go Lex Hilliard let go Leger Douzable - sign Darius Reynaud let go Jermaine Cunningham let go Ellis Lankster - sign Aaron Berry let go
with the draft looking quite heavy on WR's, TE's and LB's the jets should stick with an inside out strategy when dealing with their own FA's. we absolutely have to concentrate on the OL and front seven on D and make an aggressive play to re-sign howard and douzable.....and likely colon..... after that it gets a little murky as the jets are likely to draft a TE and WR early on in the draft so its likely a choice between cumberland and winslow, but not both. as far as wilkerson goes - i would look to extend him this offseason. he is a probowl alternate this year i believe but we all know that will change come next year. his price tag goes up once he gets the PB nod. not sure about Pace. the jets need an upgrade at OLB (yeah how do u upgrade 10 sacks). speed and more consistenct at the position. lets see what happens in May.
My mind has changed on Reed. I agree that he's worth keeping if he'll sign for the minimum and as a backup and role player. I think the Jets need to go with a young FS to build for the future.
