Taken today from NJ.com: Well, so much for protocol. Why Woody penned this letter to the season ticket holders and not Idzik is still a mystery. He specifically tied Idzik to Ryan and it would appear that as long as Woody is CEO, Ryan will be coach and Idzik really doesn't have much of a choice but to work with Ryan. Since no one forced Idzik to take this job, I don't feel sorry for him at all considering he has no prior GM experience but this entire episode is one giant breach of protocol if a "chain of command" actually does exists. It appears that Idzik is Rex's co-worker, not his boss. Woody's team, Woody's rules..Nuff Said..
I have no problem with this...If I am Idzik, his job should be to worry about putting the best team on the field, not getting a coach to get them to work together...Not yet. I think Woody and Idzik have that understanding, so does Rex.
Agreed. Cant seem to please Cman55 with any organization decision. Obviously he knows more about football than anyone that is affiliated with the Jets.
I support the decision, but this letter is definitely a slap in the face to Idzik. Rex and Idzik both report to Woody I guess. I hope it is Idzik who fully controls the draft, though, for our team's sake.
woody johnson is a complete fucking douche and a buffoon. that aside, everything about this email scares me, it shows that woody has no fucking clue if he was bringing up that the team won 3 of the last 4 as if that had something to do with his decision. i am not a rex hater, however the way that woody johnson runs things just infuriates me. watch us bring back sancho and have another qb competition. maybe the mantra of competition has spread to the coach vs. gm realm at this point. any way you cut it the more woody johnson is involved in anything football related the worse off we all are.
Even the part that is worded "Idzik, working closely with Rex" is ass backwards bizarro world stuff. The HC should be working with the GM not the other way around. This is confirmation in writing for some of the doubters that Cman was spot on in his interpretation of the Jets Hierarchy. It doesn't even appear to me that Idzik and Rex are equals but in fact the pecking order definitely puts Rex ahead of Idzik - he is indeed "bulletproof".
Some of you are over reacting...He wrote that letter to solidfy Rex's job and write a note to Jets ticket holders/fans we miss out on the season that we pretty much will work to fix this "yada yada yada". You know unlike the Knicks owner, I rather believe Woody more when he means it that they are working to make a Jets a winner...They have to fix shit up this off season or I will be pissed. The team must make huge overhauls on offense
I don't know why this is such a big issue.....Woody owns the team, Idzik selects the players, and Rex coaches them. We don't know what went on or what was said behind closed doors when Idzik was hired. There is no evidence Idzik has a problem with this 'approach'. Let's see how this offseason goes down before we speculate who if anybody is being back-stabbed.....
Well at least this confirms who calls the shots. Let's just hope with Idzik's limited GM experience that they have some good talent evaluators for the draft. When it comes to upgrading the offense, I can't say I'd have a lot of faith in the Idzik/Rex/Bradway braintrust if those are the main parties involved in making the draft picks. I'll value Marty's opinion over any of them and even him I'm not sold on.
Why is it so hard for you to accept that Idzik might just want to keep Rex? I mean your doing a whole lot of speculation when you say Idzik will never have a choice but to keep Rex.
You are 180 degrees off. As written, it says that Idzik is tasked with putting together the team, which will require Ryan's input.
Please quote word for word from the letter where it says that because I just reread it 3 times and don't see that.
It's a matter of understanding punctuation and reading comprehension in general. How would you draw the conclusion it "is ass backwards bizarro world stuff?"
We're confident that, with the leadership of General Manager John Idzik, working closely with Rex, we will enter 2014 with great opportunities to improve so we are just ignoring this little word?
This doesn't make any sense. 2 people work "with" each other. Its not a 1 way relationship. When I say "I'm going to mall with Steve" it doesn't imply that 1 person is above the other. It means we're equals. We're going together. I get that technically Idzik should be Rex's boss (in terms of just looking at it from a generic corporate org-chart stand point) but that's not the healthiest way to look at it. A GM-HC relationship should be a partnership. They need to be on the same page and working within the same framework. As long as Idzik believes that they can win with Rex's system and trusts him as a game-planner/player developer/decision maker (and at this point, I've seen absolutely no evidence that suggests otherwise) they can make it work. Now its Idzik's jobs to go and get the players (with some input from Rex and other members of the staff)
