He won't be expensive imo, and you act as if there won't be a FA period or a draft in 2014. That's just silly. If Idzik doesn't address the WR and TE positions in a significant fashion between FA and the draft, then he should be fired, and then the Jets would have a problem; otherwise, it's just silly to talk about the new QB having to throw to the same group of WRs and TEs.

Schaub makes zero sense imo. His cost wouldn't be far from what Cutler's would be and he would be the guaranteed starter. There'd be no competition. It would also signal that the Jets had given up on Geno as their franchise QB, and that would be stupid at this point.

McCown is having great results because of Mark Trestman. Take away Trestman and we have the McCown we've known for years.... fringe starter probable backup.

This is true. That Trestman offense is tremendous.

Wouldn't be opposed to it.. Drafting a rookie and sitting him for a couple of games, maybe a year, and TRULY develop him while having McCown holding down the fort. I'm tired of us throwing our QB to the wolves.

My bet is he stays in Chicago. Cutler is brittle and he knows the system. Keep in mind he's made his money and at that age you think about other priorities in life as well...

And this. Perfect system + smart coach + good WRs + improved OL play.

All those teams want a young QB. Plus at 34 and having a few good games will not get him starters money not even close.

Chicago will keep McCown and jettison that Vandy trash ASAP.

Trestman is a big part but not the only reason. They have an improved O-line and a pair of beasts at receiver.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. If he comes cheap I trust him more than Simms. And Garrard for that matter, because he can actually play at this age.

This year's play may drop him some, but I don't think it would drop his price that much. He's been a starter. There are enough teams looking for a starter that he won't sign unless he's guaranteed a starting job or at least the opportunity to compete for a starting job. With what they'll have to pay him, he would have to be the starter, much as Sanchez was. You can't pay Schaub whatever he will ask and then have him sit on the bench. IMO you don't sign someone like him unless you definitely plan to start him. If the Jets have given up on Geno already and they're going to look to sign a veteran starter and not just someone to push Geno, potentially start, and more than likely be a backup and veteran insurance, then they ought to just bite the bullet and go after Cutler. Don't settle for 2nd best and opt for Schaub because he'll be cheaper than Cutler.

It's too early to give up on Geno, so imo they don't need to sign someone who will definitely be their new starter. They need someone cheaper for only a year or two to push Geno, start if he hasn't improved and/or isn't ready, and serve as a veteran backup and mentor if Geno wins the job then falters again.

You could be right, but one last chance at starting for the entire season might be one of those other priorities you mentioned. He could be tired of just being a backup. The games he's gotten to start this year may have whetted his appetite to start once more before he retires.

Trestman is good, but MM and Lee are no slouches. I think McCown's talents would fit the WCO perfectly well.

What? You don't think going from Marshall & Jeffrey to Kerley & Hill would be a seamless transition? :jets:

To be honest though, if they are to bring in a "vet" this offseason, this is the type of guy (not necessarily him but a journeyman "hold the fort" type guy, and maybe draft a mid round type prospect (If the LSU kid falls due to injury)

I think he's worth a look. Lets spend our draft picks on offensive weapons around the QB (OL/TE/WR), bring a couple vets into camp and let them compete with Geno and see what happens. See what MM can do with the offense next year and then decide what the weak point is. We have so many holes on offense that the QB can't take all the blame.

p.s. slightly off-topic, but I'm pretty surprised Chicago went back to Cutler, I thought McCown earned the right to start the rest of the season.

MCCown would propbably come cheaper than Cutler, is younger, and has more upside.

    Sign me up.

no - not worth signing another over the hill QB --Marshall, Jeffrey, Bennett, Forte -- guy doesn't become a stud at 34 - fits their system and has elite weapons
