I believe that if this team is to ever change its losing culture we will need new ownership. Hopefully an owner who has made his own money instead of never working a day in his life because he inherited it. I remember watching a HBO special years ago, long before Woody bought the jets and his kid was interviewing him and other about there money or so.....well woody looked like he was on so many drugs at the time......that i'm sure he's a pill junkie..... and I don't know how many times I used to see Mike T down on the field after a game with his eyes as glassy as can be and thinking he too was a junkie.... so to the OP, there is no magic hire....only a magic sale by the his Highness....
Woody looks like the type of guy to sell the Jets to a ownership group from Los Angeles "that intends to keep the team in NY" only to move them a year later. Then once the Jets are in LA they'll get an elite QB and make a SB run and win it.
I look at the fact that the guy generated 32TDs in 2011 -- like it or not that is a nice number - Jet record number. Schaub is fragile and broken. Cutler is not going to look atthe Jets as an option -- forte, jeffrey, and marshall for Hill and kerley? Sanchez gives them a one year stop gap -- just like any other QB would. He is also young and has a lot to prove to other teams. He can resurrect his career as a starter in NY...he can't do that anyplace else. If wants wants to start in the NFL again NY is the best option. Also allows the Jets to let geno "compete" again before they fully dismiss him.
The Bears may want to move on and if Idzik and company and convince Cutler to sign up I'm sure he'd be willing to come here. Sanchez IMO is not a good QB to mentor a young player. We need a QB that can play the position while we groom Geno. Sanchez is hot garbage it's time to move on.
Ironically enough...one name DID jump out at me. I have paid attention to this guy for some time and he's always ended up some place where the "young gun" was brought in right around the time he gets there. His one year in Minnesota he was up against Dunta Culpepper in his prime. His 3 years in San Francisco he went 10-7 and this was in between Alex Smith getting drafted, Trent Dilfer wrapping up his career etc... He went 3-7 in Detroit just after they fired that idiot GM Millen and then drafted Stafford...he had some piss poor talent...worse, dare I say, than what we have here. At least we have a running game. In his career his stats are thus: 34 Games played in, 591 completions of 952 attempts for 6,381 yds. Good for a 62% completion percentage. 41 Touchdowns to 23 interceptions and 3 lost fumbles. Career rating of 85.9. (with our defense I'd "cream" for a 62% completion percentage!) He is only 33 years old and could be a nice stop gap for a few years while Geno/Simms/new drafted rookie QB rides the pine and learns. He will be cheap which will allow us to play in the F/A game to get us some upgrades as well. I also think that at this stage of his career he would be interested in one last shot. He is essentially what Rich Gannon was when Chuckie found him. On top of that...I've watched enough of him play that he has passed the eyeball test a couple of times under some pretty nasty conditions. Not only that I have been to a couple of his practices (wife is a 49'er fan) to know how he looks there as well. He may not have the "name" some of the others do but he's got what it takes "upstairs", has enough skills to be dangerous and would be a perfect 2-4yr. player while our defense continues to hammer on the rest of the NFL. Just an opinion....thoughts?
Actually...he runs fairly well... In those same 34 games he has 72 Rushing attempts for 316 yds. A 4.4 yds./attempt average. The longest being 40yds. He's scored 3 rushing TD's. 4.4 Yds. per pop isn't bad. Then again...remember...his cost will be low so HOPEFULLY we can bring a decent F/A O-Lineman or two.
I like Shaun Hill; he actually beat out Alex Smith in the training camp in 2009 before eventually losing the job later in the season. He hasn't done enough to be handed a starting job but he certainly a guy you can bring in to compete for the job. In that scenario, I would still bring back Sanchez on an incentive-laden deal and have Hill, Sanchez, Smith, Simms or draftee all compete. May the best men win at all spots QB1, 2 and 3. At the same time you load up on skill position talent in FA and the draft.
I am absolutely down with that. I think, depending upon if they actually give him a real shot with what's left of this year, that Simms would be the odd man out. I'm cool with a 3-way competition...4 is just too much. Either Simms or Sanchez is the odd man...most likely Simms. Geno is too new to throw on the scrap heap yet...I still see his skills he just needs time to ride the pine. I would absolutely welcome a competition between a guy like Shuan Hill and Sanchez...I think Hill would beat him out handily to be honest. AND he knows the W/C offense...WELL.
Like Oher? Until the Jets get a whole lot better at finding, developing & keeping talented players on the roster, we're gonna start to look like the 80's Raiders. Mmmm...maybe that ain't so bad.
Shaun Hill did beat the Dolphins...something we can't seem to do lately. He'd probably cost over 2 mil a year...
I would think that would be the going rate. Right about $2 - $2.5 mil per year. Maybe build in some incentives if he wins the job, plays a certain number of snaps etc...etc...he can climb into the $3/$4 million range. I think that would be a pretty nice number.
That comment lost you all credibility. What you are looking for with the Jets is a one year stop gap to get some skill players in and look to the draft for a QB in 2015 with a better offensive roster to develop with.
Now see...I'm not sure I agree...I say we still bring in our stop gap to compete...but at the same time...IF things go right in the draft...bring in one of the studs in 2014. I have no crystal ball but 2015 simply doesn't look all that promising...today that is. Draft a stud next year...park his ass on the bench. Draft ALL offense this year if possible. Go F/A on some more offense, some secondary guys and pray Milliner is having rookie problems at CB. Cromartie has about one more year left...Wilson another year in the system... A lot of "if's" and "hopes" there but you can't fix the whole machine in one year.
I think Hill will get good money this offseason due to how poor back-up QBs are throughout the league. The Lions are one of the very few teams that can remain competitive if their starter went down.
Agreed...of that list: Derek Anderson Jimmy Clausen Jay Cutler Jordan Palmer Josh McCown Trent Edwards Shaun Hill Matt Flynn Seneca Wallace Chad Henne Pat Devlin Joe Webb Josh Freeman Luke McCown Curtis Painter David Garrard Michael Vick Charlie Whitehurst Tarvaris Jackson Colt McCoy Kellen Clemens Dan Orlovsky Rusty Smith Rex Grossman Those 4 are going to be in demand...I think Green Bay brings back Wallace and I want no part of Michael Vick...we already have enough of a side show without adding him to the mess. Give me the strong steady Hill if we can swing it.
One unpopular "if's" and "hopes" that you left out is that under MM, Sanchez has his "ah hah" moment and the light comes on. MM has a history of this. I am a member of a small rebellious contingent that believes this was going to happen this year if he did not get hurt. Maybe the injury ends up just delaying it one year. Many of the Sanchez-haters out there would have a real hard time dealing with such a scenario but, provided he is retained, it is probably just as, if not more, likely to happen than the chances of us landing the next Manning/Brees/Brady/Rodgers/RGIII all rolled into 1 prospect. For true Jets fans either scenario works fine for us with no conflict of interest.
That is a fantastic point! All I care about is winning. I don't care who is under center. I, also, do not hate Sanchez, contrary to popular belief. I was, much like everyone else on here, completely frustrated and flabbergasted at his bone headed plays etc.... If they decide to keep him AND he has the "Ah Haaa" moment then all the better! He's still ridiculously young and would set us up for the next decade or so. I'm not holding my breath but stranger things have happened. Alex Smith is a perfect example of the Jekyll and Hyde ways when burdened with many different coordinators and/or USELESS coordinators. We shall see...
