Daily News Reports: BANGED UP: Eric Mangini doesn't discuss injuries the day after a game, but Chad Pennington and Coles appeared to be banged up. Pennington was seen in the locker room with an Ace bandage on his left calf, with tape around his left ankle. It may have been hurt on his pass to Cotchery. After releasing the ball, Pennington was hit in his lower leg by DE Richard Seymour. It could've been disastrous, as Pennington nearly hyperextended his knee. Pennington, who no longer speaks with the media on Mondays, doesn't appear to be seriously hurt. Coles was wearing a heavy wrap on his left shin/calf, which was attached to an electronic stimulator. That, too, doesn't seem to be serious.
Both will be totally ready for Sunday against the Bills. If it were Abraham with such a thing, I'd be saying 2 to 3 weeks minimum. Sorry, about the dig on JA, but he is establishing himself with a real tag of not playing injured when money is in hand.
That hit from Seymour was definitely scary, I had missed it due to the elation of the Cotch TD and then my buddy pointed it out to me on the replay. I was surprised he jumped right back up. Doesn't surprise me that he's in some pain....
I've never been happy about another team's injuries but I have to admit I smiled when I saw that JAbe was wimping out again.
Honestly, when the play happened, I saw it right away, and went "Oh SHIT!" My wife was like "WHAT?!?!" I told her, "Penny just got hit low." If it weren't for the result of the pass, I would probably have been holding my breath long enough to suffocate. I thought there was a new rule that guys couldn't hit a QB that low? I know it was more of a push and fall, but wasn't the Kimo play on Palmer the same thing, and isn't that why they made the rule? EDIT: Actually, thinking about it for a second, there was a roughing the passer called on that play wasn't there?
Yes, there is a rule, and there was a flag and penalty assessed. It was assessed on the Jets ensuing kick-off. Jets kicked from the 45. Yes, Nugent was able to put it in the endzone for a touchback.
You’re not going to make it through 60 minutes of football against a top team with 250 – 300 lb lineman tackling you without a few bumps and bruises. I was more concerned when I knew he was going to have to heave ho that Hail Mary. I think his shoulder problems started with a stunt like that.
Anyone in the side of the stadium where Pennington got hit see those two Pats lineman just sitting back by the flag giving the holding signal over and over? I cant remember who it was doing it but they were calling everyone back to the spot of the flag. It was an amazing feeling when they were blatantly wrong. Anyone else see that?
Yeah, that had me worried for a minute but it turns out they were full of shit. That seemed to go on for a while, too. Everyone cheered the catch and the first down, then it seemed like I was the only person in my area that realized Cotchery was still running. The key was I saw the ref running with him so I knew the play was still alive. Then we had to sit through the long review--geez, what a sequence that was.
I did. They seemed pretty convinced, though. They didnt move for about 2 minutes. One of them kept waiving back.
i know the league tries to protect QB's, but now you can't tackle them low? jeez. eventually, QB's will be wearing red jerseys the entire game. cheers
I don't understand your logic...he threw a deep ball to Coles in the first half that traveled further than the "hail mary" which it wasn't even. Here's news for you...if he was trying to get the ball in the endzone, he wouldn't have thrown it to the sideline and made it a longer throw...USE YOUR HEAD.
Actually they started when he was running through the secondary at Buffalo in 2004 and didn't slide when he should have. People like to blame the O-line but that's how it started. He had a first down already, too, should have slid.
I was thinking the same thing--can't hit them high, now you can't hit them low. They need to sew a patch on the QB's chest to show the defenders where you can hit the guy.
I think this is a good rule. The QB's legs for the most part are planted on the ground while trying to pass. If you get hit low and you have weight on that leg something has to give - and knees take soooo long to get right again - maybe. RB's are running so going low is less likely to cause injury because the leg is only on the ground a split second. Now, RB's can still get injuries to the knees, but it usually involves a stop and go cut or something like that when the hit occurs.
I remember hearing a story of Chad tweaking his shoulder while trying to out through Vinny when he was a rookie. Maybe it was just a GG story?
I agree with Hornet. QB is one of, if not the, most dangerous positions in sports. Remember, it's one guy relying on 5 or 6 of his buddies to protect his life while he looks at 3 or 4 of his other pals, plus the same number of guys covering them. QBs are hit blind all the time. Can you imagine getting hit blindsided 6 or 7 times a day? The rule was put in place because of Palmer's injury. Does anyone honestly believe Pittsburgh would be reigning champs if Kimo did not hit Palmer low?
yeah, i mean, i understand the rule and why it's implemented. but as a defender going full-speed trying to tackle a QB, you cant: hit him with your helmet, blow to the head with your hand, or go low. that's a lot for a defender to consider in a matter of seconds. cheers
I remember hearing that too. It wasn't a serious injury, but it was sore. If I remember correctly, Chad said it himself. What he should have done was just concentrate on throwing at his targets. He had Vinny beaten easily in that department.
