Way too hypothetical. Would Alex have beaten the Buccaneers? Maybe, maybe not. Falcons? No way. Patriots Week 2? Possibly. 2nd Patriots meeting? Maybe, Maybe not. Probably not. Saints? Maybe. Maybe not. Bills? Maybe, maybe not. Titans? Bengals? 2 of Geno's worst games. Maybe, probably not. Really hard to say, but to think the Jets would be 7-2 or 6-3 with Alex Smith is more than a stretch. They would be lucky to be 5-4 with him.
I believe that Alex Smith would not have resulted in any more wins than the Jets currently have with Geno. On the flip side of this i don't think the Chiefs would be near undefeated with Geno at the helm. Pretty interesting topic to think about.
Exactly. The NFL is less about which team has elite players and more about coaches scheming to utilize the players on the roster to their full potential, which is exactly what both Andy Reid and Rex Ryan are doing. That gets missed by football fans today with fantasy football reducing all productivity to a stat sheet.
Right. Don't get me wrong I love fantasy football through every pain and every victory, but it does alter the fans viewpoint of the sport. For example, Geno's performance the other day against the Saints. 8 completions for 115 yards may look like a poor performance, but in retrospect, he did exactly what Rex has been looking for him to do. Manage the game, no turnovers, and feed the ball to the backs. This played exactly into their gameplan, keeping Drew Brees and that offense's time on the field limited.
Am I missing something or didn't the 49ers "TRADE" Alex Smith to the Chiefs for two conditional draft picks for 2013 and 2014 that both turned out to be 2nd round picks?!?! Hypothetical or not, the JETS are doing fine with their own rookie QB named Smith.
Geno Smith is the 25th ranked QB in the league, has played inconsistently, turned the ball over many times. holds the ball too long resulting in excessive sacks, and has been at least partially responsible for four losses. Alex Smith is the 18th ranked QB, is very consistent, never turns the ball over, has a quick release, and has led his team to an undefeated 9-0 record. What is not to like with Alex? With Alex Smith I still think we lose to the Bengals and maybe the Titans but may have pulled out wins in the closer games against the Patriots and Steelers. I will say 7-2 and division lead having swept the Patriots.
Geno is a rookie It took Alex around five seasons to go fron Ryan Leaf turnover laden BUST to mediocre and two more to become Superman this season I'll take Geno and his upside every day and twice on Sunday
What a fair comparison! Smith is a 5 year vet with all kinds of weapons. Geno is a rookie with no weapons! Right on!
He is in his 9th year but the point still stands. I don't think we would be doing as well with Alex Smith
Alex Smith is being sold short IMO. When he has to I've seen him air it out, and he can win you a shoot out.
Alex Smith would have this team probably at 7-2... playing consistent, mistake-free ball, but the Jets would still be limited (ie. not going very far) and still be looking for the long term answer at QB.. I'll take this situation -even if we find out Geno isn't the answer and we don't get as many wins in the short term, at least the Jets are trying for a better future.
What shootouts are you speaking of? The ONLY time I believe he has done this is against the Saints in the playoffs.

Alex Smith is the definition of game manager x3... His top receiver is his RB!! It's a dump off session over there in KC! His top, ELITE receiver, has the same amount of yards as Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley. This guy is getting paid a bunch of money to run half assed routes since he knows that the ball is coming at him.
he is the definition of a winner the last few years. This game is not about fantasy #s, he makes plays to win. Sure he has talent, outside of Brady what QBs win w/o big time talent?
