sorry guys but the stats that i see being posted do need some measure of interpretation......especially when pennington is involved. mind you - whatever these stats are - MOST nfl teams have and will continue to stack the LOS against the jets until they get another QB. that being said - our receivers usually face base secondary alignments, one on one coverages and usual cover 2/3 schemes. point is that a 30+ yard pass from pennington has a decent chance of being completed IF the receivers can make a play on the ball depending on the defense. coles and s. moss were always threats to run after the catch and it appears cotchery will be as well. IMO - the long balls that CP throws are absolute ducks but they are well timed in the scheme of the game and do allow for the receivers to make plays - and our receivers are physical enough to get the ball and produce YAC. thats what we are seeing in the stats. the stats would definitely improve even more if the O-line was above standard. a QB like penny could stand back, put a nice touch on the ball and let the receivers do there thing. Unfortunately the pass protection time is limited which just kills penington cause he needs every microsecond to survey the field and deliver the ball. jil
It's incredible the amount of lengths people will go to just to avoid giving any type of compliment to Chad. His "ducks" as you call them have looked better than most QB's long passes this year. Brady had an underthrown ball that Barrett intercepted on Sunday. No comment on that one? People really are focusing too much on the Hail Mary pass and using that one pass to say Chad can't throw deep. How many bombs does he have to throw and complete to satisfy people around here???
His deep passes in Tennessee to Coles certainily weren't ducks and were on a line, in stride. His 1st half throw to Coles on the sideline where he juked the hell out of Ellis Hobbs I think it was and Coles managed to get 2 feet in was nice. The ball got their quick right at the numbers...His scrambling play running to his left then turns back and plants and fires a bullet to JMac... But people just want to believe what they want to...Just refuse to give Chad credit. You all cannot tell me that his passes have more power and get to the WR quicker than in years prior.
Absolutely and imagine wide receivers who after getting the ball in space actually run after the catch but then again they only do that to pad Chad's stats:wink:
Winston, while a agree that saying Pennington played great might be a slight exageration, how can you say it was a bend but don't break defense on the two major plays in question? Both TD's were against the blitz and Pennington got hit on both plays. Hardly a sign of a bend but don't break defense where you typically rush 3-4 guys max. And the pass to Cotchery was thrown while there were two guys right near them. In my opinion I didn't see a relaxed D from the Pats until the last minute of the game. I think that Penningtion did about as well as you can expect considering the time that he had to throw the ball during much of the day.
Cotchery was allowed to catch the ball in front of him and was imediately hit by the CB and the safety who collided. On Coles TD he cought a pass in front of 3 guys and broke mutliple tackles to get to the end zone. It isn't as if he was up against single coverage and beat the coverage, he went through a guntlet of Pats to score.
Respect your opinion and not saying that the WR's didn't make great plays. Just disagreeing with the point that these TD's were a result of some bend but don't break "prevent" D.
Oh, didn't you know, Chad's the only QB whose stats are all padded by the WR's YAC. All of the other QB's in the league do it all on their own
To those of you who are complaining that the Jets didn't get a "chukker" in the off-season, think again. The Jets have a lot of holes that they've only begun to fill, so using a draft choice to trade for another QB and/or filling up your cap space with a big name QB's contract $$ is stupid. Use the draft choice and/or cap $$ to improve your lines and get a quality RB. Develop Clemens over the next couple of years. I'm speaking as a fan of a team that's "been there, done that" twice in the last 10 years. It's not a good stategy. The Bills tried the trade route not once, but twice, the first time when they traded a #1 and a #4 to Jacksonville for Rob Johnson in 1997 or 1998 based on how well RJ threw in 1 NFL game. Boy, did they get suckered in that one! The Bills then traded a #1 for Bledsoe in 2002, but he never had success because the team around him was never playoff quality. I think Bledsoe can get a good team to the playoffs and maybe even win a SB, but he needs a good team around him, and the Bills weren't ever that good. If the Bills had used that #1 to draft defense and some of the cap $$ Bledsoe took up to keep some of the decent OL and DL guys they let walk, they might be a playoff team today. The Carp traded a #2 for Culpepper this off-season, and they'll be sorry for it (not just because the Bills kicked their butts Sunday, either) because they're also more than a QB away from being a playoff team. They could have made the playoffs with Ferret if they had used that #2 on a lineman or LB or if they invested in better FA OL or secondary. They will waste years trying to "win now" without winning at all. Besides, true franchise QBs like P Manning, Tommy boy, and McNabb don't get traded or allowed to be FAs until they're passed their primes. The guys who are available are journeymen, has-beens, never-weres, or ain't-that-goods. Get Penney a decent OL (hopefully, those rookies will come around) and a decent running back, and fix the D, and he'll get the Jets to the playoffs.
See Winny someone can take what you posted turn it around & say CP is the best of the worst QBs we have in our stable & then it sounds like CP is really not that good cause everybody knows he has a super weaked arm & the other side sets there Ds up accordlingly. Now there are some who will go ballastic when they read this but the facts are the facts & when 5 are trying to block 6 or 7 or 8 it is rather a impossible task both for the running & passing game
The TD's were the result of bad tackling and great plays by the receivers. Chad got them the ball that's what counts, but Chad was not great on Sunday he was good enough to be part of the team that put us in a hole that we couldn't climb out of and good enough to rally the troops to make it respectable after the game was pretty much over. To knock Chad for his play is a gross exaggeration to call Chads play great is an equally gross exaggeration. Teams don't play the same against a perceived weak opponent in a game they are winning by 24 points, that?s reality. Buffalo is a game where solid QB play will be the difference between winning and losing. Great QB play should lead to an easy victory.
Good job starting an optimist's thread Lantern. You've made people bitter and angry with your sunshiny speak. There is no argument to be had for or against Chad's performance. His numbers speak for themselves so don't waste your breath. And I'm no cultist. I was a Bollinger guy going into camp. But if Chad stays healthy, and keeps this performance up, the Jets will continue to be exciting this year. No one expected them to be able to compete, and so far they've shown they can compete, and entertain. Are they good enough to dethrone the Pats? Not yet. But there's promise, and a lot of the credit for that has to be given to Chad. He's exceeded every "Expert Opinion" in the land so far. So far. It's a long season. Unfortunately for Chad, every game won't be perfect and as soon as he has a bad one, people will be jumping off the ship. But not you love letter-writin' Lantern.

Not to beat a dead horse, but IMHO you fail to prove your point about the exact plays in question. While in general most teams do play looser against teams that are down in my opinion that wasn't the case with the Pats. Particularly on the TD's the Pats were all over Pennington and he did an excellent job to get the balls off (followed by exceptional plays by the WR's). Again don't mean to pick and I hope you're right about it being a battle of the QB's. If it's a battle of the ground games the immediate history is not on the side of the Jets. The Jets have got to stop McGahee <sp>.
Feel free to beat I tend to be a Nag. I can't prove my point it's an opinion based on observation. Your point of view is every bit as valid. Nice response.
OMG! Pennington threw some incomplete passes???? What a bum! All the other "strong armed" QB's hit 100% of their passes on Sunday, right? Look at the great game Rothlesberger had last night. What an arm!! Culpepper and his gun have looked great this year so far. Don't you wish we had him?? Delhomme and Simms are just lighting it up. Bledsoe has a great arm. He looked tremendous throwing three picks and losing the game in week one. Favre has a gun, we all know that. What has it gotten him - 3-4 wins in two seasons?
His 46 posts have said far more than your 6000. You have 4000 posts calling Bradway Dracula and 2000 "noodle arm" posts. Please don't be bragging about your repetitive simplistic posts.
