Not enough that's for sure, and that needs to change. IIRC one of them did get fined earlier in the season, but can't remember the specifics.
I understand all that but it doesn't make it right, and the integrity of the game is at risk. Could you imagine the outcry by the NY media and Jets fans if they lost the game because of that BS call? The league is all about image and it would get yet another big black eye. Something is going to have to be done. I disagree with you last statement. These penalty challenges could be added to the existing plays that a coach can challenge, or add it to what the booth could review.
The pandora's box was opened when they changed the way they call roughing the passer. Overall, I agree with it-QBs are in a vulnerable position. But it can be abused. Did you see Luck flop at the end of the Broncos game and draw a flag? They need to be able to review these calls, they're too difficult for the refs to call and too many mistakes, with big consequences, are being called
I don't think you can start letting coaches challenge penalties but on personal fouls like this there should be a mechanism where the replay guy in the booth can take one look at the replay and tell the guy to pick up the flag.
Just like the players get fined for "illegal" hits these refs should be fined for botched calls, which possibly would make them think twice before throwing a flag if there is any shadow of a doubt. These are game changing penalties and even though as was stated by one poster above" it didn't cost us the game", the outcome should be decided by the athletes not the morons in the striped shirts.
The league needs to shift the penalties away from on field to off field. Carefully review hits like this after the game, and, if warranted, fine the offender. Fine the player a percentage of pay, so higher paid players feel the pain as well. This way refs don't have to make snap judgements, and the game is not tainted. That was a textbook tackle, and the flag could have changed this game.
