He is really getting the most out of this team with a rookie QB. It also helps that we finally have a real offensive coordinator. He has taken over the defensive play calling again and this defense is really getting after it. Pettine was over rated and was glad to see him leave.
i assume you are talking about rex, its not a 1 year at a time thing. its none or at least 3 or 4. i still see alot of the same problems with rex that we have seen in the past. and i still wonder how well he has gotten along with idzik. its really all about what idzik sees and whether or not he feels rex is the guy to bring the jets to the superbowl. my only hope is that woody stays the fuck out of it and lets the gm make the decisions.
To me, the biggest thing is that he always has his guys playing hard for him, no matter what. In his 4+ years here, you've never seen them give up. When you have a GM and scouting dept that can a talented group of players in here, the sky is the limit.
No, he doesn't deserve another year. he either deserves another 4 years or should be fired. you don't keep him dangling another year, which he already has on his contract.
This Either fire him or give him a long extension. For that, they will wait end of the year I believe.
This is about where I am with the whole Rex extension opera. While the team plays hard and doesn't quit, there are some things that Ryan is still on a learning curve with. Thank God he didn't waste any more timeouts with futile challenges last week. That in itself was a huge stepping stone for Rexy. Its all about GM John now. If he feels Rex is the one, Rex will get his extension. Sadly, if he doesn't and Woody thinks Rex is the one, Rex will get his extension. Either way, barring a complete 2011 style crash and burn, Rex will get his extension although unlike some of the Rexaholics around here, I don't think it will be a lifetime deal but more in the range of 4-5 years if it happens at all. Now if after another 4-5 years and the Jets still don't make it to the SB, that would be 2018 season, 10 years under Rex and 49 years for those keeping count at home, perhaps it would be best for all parties that they go their separate ways. Until then, I'll have my Rexahol on ice, straight no chaser.
it does look like the 4-12/5-11 scenarios are toast with this team so getting 7-8-9 wins with this QB and lack of bonafide offensive threats definitely puts the heat on idzik to keep rex. i think he mans up for a 3 year extension.
He will get extended..the "media" is already talking about what a great job he is doing and that he is in the hunt for coach of the year. You don't fire somebody like that.
He gets a 4 year extension...say what you will but the players love the guy and play hard as hell for him. He might be seen as a bit of a "Players Coach" but he has grown in his time in NY as coach and really seems to be settling in to the role. The fact that a team is picked to be the worst in football has come out day in and day out with a rookie QB and played this well is a testament to the coaching staff.
Not for nothing but Idzik hasn't earned the right to be the sole executive yet. Woody believes in Rex. If Woody believes in Rex, then Rex will stay. Idzik isn't some premiere GM who can dismiss the team and be highly coveted when looking for a new team. He's a young up and coming GM who hasn't had an opportunity to prove himself adequately yet. Woody will do what Woody does, and it isn't inappropriate at this point.
You could say the same thing about Guitar Jimmy Dolan too regarding how the GM title is executed. If Idzik is GM in name only, then Woody would have been better served by making Rex both HC and GM and cut the middle man out. Then again, OJT seems to be how things work at Jets HQ. If it works for Dennis Thurman, Eric Mangini, Herm Edwards, and Mike Tannenbaum, it works for John Idzik.
He isn't saying he is GM in name only. He is saying he doesn't have the proven expertise to have the sole decision making authority in determining whether Rex should stay or go. Likely very few GM's do, and those who do have years of proven success to validate that level of power. Idzik is a GM who would have to get ownership approval to fire Rex, and that isn't unusual or inappropriate depending on his amount of experience.
When it comes down to Rex getting fired and I think he has a good chance too. It will be did he reach the goal, to win a Super Bowl. No he didn't. That all the owner will look at. Goals reached.
