New York Jets @nyjets 25s We have activated quarterback David Garrard to the active roster. In order to make room for Garrard, we have released Brady Quinn.
He will be starting in StLouis this week. Good move by the Jets to let him go get a job where he can play.
Very happy for Garrard, its nice to see the man work hard at his last chance at being on an NFL team and reaching his goal. Hopefully he can be a help to geno, or if it somehow came down to it a stable man under center.
Rich Cimini @RichCimini 32m Garrard will get $54k/wk to carry clipboard and mentor Geno Smith. A few wks ago, he was catching passes from his wife, a flag-football QB. I believe it'll still be Simms
Interesting; this is what I expected to happen when I heard that Garrard was back. He said that his knee isn't swelling up anymore even after running on concrete 3 - 4 days a week, and so the Jets wanted to wait 2 weeks to confirm that his knees are okay. Luckily, Quinn was released before the season started, and was re-signed afterwards, so his contract did not become guaranteed at the start of the season. Quinn gets one last check (for like, $100k for those two games) and if his agent is on top of his game, he's calling up the Rams right now to see if they'd be interested in having him try out. Garrard had said, before he retired, that his knee was swelling up a lot and although he felt that he could be the starter, his knee needed to be rested every few days, so it didn't make sense for him to stay in the competition. Now his knee is apparently improved a bit, and his quotes are indicating that he is happy to accept a mentor/backup role. I'm sure he also wants to make some money, and the veteran's minimum is still a ton of money, even if it's below average by NFL standards. Garrard has historically been a solid QB, an overperforming 4th round draft pick. Brady Quinn is a first round bust, and was never as good as Garrard was. Even though Garrard is a bit old and hasn't played in years, he can teach Smith a lot.
I would rather have Garrard back-up Geno than Simms. Isn't there a rule where if your first 2 QB's get hurt, your inactive #3 can suit up? If so, then David's injury concerns should not be an issue.
there was until about 5 years ago when the 46th man inactive (not really inactive" quarterback exemption was removed
as expected..and he will be starting this week I would guess. Rich Cimini @RichCimini 1m Ex-Jets QB Brady Quinn not out of work long. Agrees to terms with Rams, according to multiple reports. #Jets
good for Quinn he provided some nice guidance to Smith while here and deserves another chance particularly when his main competition is godawful Kellen Clemens only negative is like Bradford, he will be saddled with Brian Schittenheimer as his OC
Yeah, the Rams are going to be one of the worst teams this year after Bradford's injury. It'll be hard for whoever they go with as their starter to learn the system that fast, and it's not only a bad system but a complicated one. And Schotty's playcalling is horrible, as we know all too well.
