My thoughts are that Tony Gonzalez is a HOF TE, one of the best to ever play the game, and our defense was preventing the long ball, playing a bend-don't-break defense. I'm not worried about Harris' play.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/10/08/had-a-bad-day-team-week-5-2/ In another article, I found this: So even though he was mentioned in the "had a bad day" weekly feature, he still was the highest rated ILB before last week. Let's hope it was just one "bad day". Fortunately he won't have to face Tony Gonzalez every week.
he quickly diagnosed plays, and got into position to make tackles. once in position, he delivered fierce shots while also wrapping up. there was virtually no yards after contact when Harris hit against the Falcons. its no secret that strong DL makes life much easier for ILB's, and that was also evident on Monday night. its also no secret that a 3-4 ILB covering Gonzalez is a tremendous mismatch, and that was evident as well. overall i thought he played very well against the run, blitzed well, and was mediocre in coverage. not sure how many ILB's would shine covering Tony G though. I like Harris's game so far this season, whereas last year i felt he was often a step too late and wasn't wrapping up as well as seasons past.
My Thoughts: David Harris has never been particularly good in coverage, but few, if any, 3-4 inside LBs actually are. He's a prototypical run-stuffer with a high football IQ and an excellent motor. He's not going to shut down Tony Gonzalez anytime soon and his zone coverage drops are decent, but nothing to write home about. Overall, he's a very solid player and certainly not a cause for concern. He's probably a little overpaid, but so is everyone else with a moderately recognizable name these days.
PFF over analyzes. They include situations in their stats that might have more to do with other players and situations than the one they are analyzing . I never take their rankings as truth. Last year they had us as a top 3 oline with something like 69 QB hits and loads of sacks. Anybody who actually watched our line last year knows that is false.
I figured Demario would cover Gonzalez. We knew Harris was a liability in coverage. Whereas Demario can cover a little.
He has been great this year outside of the Atlanta game. He's graded out horribly on PFF his previous 3 years though. His coverage skills are the only thing that get a decent grade.
Harris is a hard hitting tackler, he isn't much of a cover guy and going against Tony Gonzalez? I can live with it.
What was the stat? Gonzo's got 200 consecutive games with a reception? Yeah, I think Harris can be cut a little slack...
i wanted to come in here and make another comment about how it was tony fucking gonzalez, but then i realized that he was covering tony gonzalez, and nothing really needed to be said...
