Also too our OL really played well today in the passing game. They gave Geno the time he needed for some long passes.
Demario Davis is another guy that was just beasting all over the place AGAIN today. I thought he was kind of skinny coming out of college but he looked like he filled out a lot this year and he was just everywhere. All the credit in the world to the DL which is their due but there are a lot of highly regarded 1st round picks there. Davis is looking like a home run which is going to do all kinds of good things throughout the defense. Maybe the most obvious immediate impact is reducing the space that Harris has to be responsible for and that really seems to be helping him already. The sky is the limit for this defense moving forward.
Gotta agree front 7 is improved....we all saw it. Jets need a 3rd ILB though. Drop-off from Demario Davis & David Harris is steep. Heaven forbid one of them gets injured or tired. Nick Bellore is the back-up. Depth needed here....probally next year.
it's so fun to watch all this young talent come together. We have many that believed we had a dominant defense the past few years but in the coming years we will see what a dominant D looks like once we upgrade the secondary and even w/ a mediocre secondary our front 7 can mask those flaws a bit.
i think i posted last year - or maybe even the year before about us seeing the re-emergence of a type of "sack exchange" with this team.... one game doesn't do it of course but its nice to see the sacks pile up finally. a pressure defense is good but a pressure D with QB pressure/sacks is even better - and a must in the NFL these days. something the jets have been sorely lacking for a long time - even with defensive minded coaches at the helm.
It's amazing to me how Rex gets the most out of guys. Harrison and Douzable weren't even drafted, now they are either starting or a heavy part of the rotation in one of the best D-lines in the league. I don't know if it's scheme or just the way Rex coaches them up (gotta give Thurman credit too) but it's AWESOME to see so much youth that's already giving us so much production.
I just cant believe after 6 seasons we cant find an OLB to replace Calvin Pace in either the draft or free agency. I guess that was supposed to be Vernon Gholston.
yes likely so. goes to show how much a missed pick, especially top 10, can kill u for years at that position. geez imagine if VG was the real deal. would have been a real sick D in 09/10.
we signed Pace the same offseason we drafted Gholston so he wasn't supposed to replace Pace. pace has been a very underrated guy here b/c people foolishly believe he was a great pass rusher. Never has been, never will be but he's been a very good player for us most of the time he has been here.
Rex was the D-line coach on the 2000 Ravens. That's one of the things that always made me scratch my head when the CB obsession kept popping up. The man was grounded in the teeth of a great defense but he was trying to build the perfect defense from the tail forward.
After seeing what they were doing in TC I said all offseason this DL could be dominant. And now we're starting to see it.These guys were in the QB's path within 2-3 movements off the snap. SCARY. It's only gonna get better as Rex begins mixing in more looks, the guys improve their technique & continue growing into their frames. It all starts upfront.
I'm with you on that one. As much as our offense needs upgrading if we took an elite OLB with some pass rush ability high in the draft I wouldn't even be mad. That and some safety help (not a high pick, just in general) and I think we could have the best D in the league for years to come.
I agree 100%. I remember Rex saying there's no pressure like pressure up the middle, collapsing the pocket into the QB's face. Outside pressure is great, but it's easily defeated by screens or by the QB simply stepping up into a clean pocket. Even the BEST outside pass rushers avg LESS than one sack a game. But if you have a good OLB AND you can collapse the pocket at the same time, like the Jets can, then it's all over kids. Again, I'd love to see Idzik go OLB, Safety, Harris' replacement #1,2,3 next year giving the Jets the most dominant, youngest defense in the NFL for the next 10 years.
They need more offensive weapons...you go all defense you end up in the same situation you are now. No offensive weapons and a young QB....can't repeat the same process. You need Alex Smith at QB if you want to do that.
Wilkerson will have a 10+ sack year easily. He's got 3 already and had a total of 5 last year. Richardson is a big difference and Harrison has improved quite a bit. Yep, it is looking beastly indeed. Give this group a couple years and they'll be the best in the NFL. I'm just worried about future contracts. We're going to have to pay Wilks soon, Coples in another year or so and Richardson down the line. I just hope we have the money to extend all of these guys and still sign some offensive playmakers when the time is right.
