What exactly do you consider "long time friend"? Pettine was helping his dad coach a high school team at the turn of the century. Rex brought him on to be a protege, and judging by Pettine's results calling plays for the past two seasons, that didn't work out too well. Jumped ship? I think he was allowed to leave on his own the same way Schotty was, just to save face from betting fired. That speaks more to the character of Rex Ryan than it does anything else.
Rex is a good coach. A player's coach (to a fault). If he were to get fired, I think he would be snapped up by another team right away. In a lower profile town with a more friendly media, he would thrive. I don't think his job here is hanging by the thread that other's seem to think it is. He is making some changes to his style ( probably mandated from above). Its beyond hypocritical for the media to attack him for that. All he'll need is a little unexpected success this season and that can all turn around
Except for Kotite every single name on this list was a first yeat HC like Rex. We are the rookie HC team of the NFL. But nothing suggests Rex is better than these guys except maybe Kotite. Heck Mangini's drafts had as much to do with our playoff appearances as Rex's coaching. And more imoportantly Coslet, Mangini, and even Herm had bad seasons that they werre able to recover from and turn it around. With Rex we have declined by two games for three seasons in a row (10-6, 8-8, 6-10). And this year doesn't look like a "turnaround season". Hopefully I am wrong about that. ANd honestly - where exactly are we going with Rex cause it feels like "nowhere".
That is why I like Rex even better now. He knows not to get involved with the talent and leave Izdik to make those decisions. As a coach,he is top 10 in the NFL my opinion. Let's say rex is the head coach of an elite offense like the Falcons. He would win a SB within the next 1-3 years like tony dungy did in indy.
I believe you are alone in that opinion. Top ten DC I might agree, but you are living is a dream my man.
Top ten coach? Are we even being serious anymore? Rex is done at the end of the year and smart jet fans know its the best thing. The guy has helped turn this team into an absolute joke. Just look at what they have become. Keeping him this year was a big mistake. Not surprising considering woody is a moron. Hes only delaying the obvious here. Makes J.I. look weak. Also delaying the obvious with Geno. Guy is a complete bust. All this does is set back the jets franchise another few years.
I think Rex is a good coach. I think he is an OUTSTANDING Defensive coach. I think Jim Harbaugh is a good coach. I think Harbaugh is an OUTASTANDING Offensive coach. With the NFL more and more offense-centric, I think this means that a coach like Harbaugh, all else equal, is worth more -- 'better' -- than a similar defensive coach. And that says nothing about said offensive coach having a GREAT QB like Kapernick or even a defensive coach like Belichick having Brady. When Belichick didn't have Brady, he didn't last 4 years with Cleveland.
Sick of hearing about RRs "lack of offensive prowess" when its clear every HC specializes in one phase. What has McCarthy done for Green Bays defense? What has Payton done for NOs defense? What did Dungy do for Indys offense? What did Lovie Smith do for Chicagos offense? What did Cowher do for Pittsburgh's offense? What has Coughlin done for Giants defense? What has Jim Harbaugh done for SF defense? Etc, etc We've seen what happens under RR when we play complimentary football.
This is an interesting thing to look at. In theory offensive specialist coaches should become more valuable than their defensive counterparts because of the league now. But come playoff time, it feels like more often than not the losing team thinks they have to make their defense better for next time around. It's a balancing act.
Please with this Rex Ryan crap. He is an undisciplined buffoon whose lack of discipline is reflected in his team. Keeping a clueless head coach for the sake of continuity is asinine. The Jets have changed coaches often. Know why? They hire jerks like Ryan. The two most successful seasons in Jet history resulted from the hiring of proven NFL coaches (Ewbank and Parcells). As for the two playoff runs many of you apparently masturbate to nightly, let me remind you of a couple of things: coach Ryan has yet to win a division, never mind a championship, and made the playoffs the second time by the skin of their teeth (Rexy himself declared the Jets dead, if you remember. One of his many stupid statements). As for the AFCCGs, his "vaunted defense" shit the bed both times, costing us a trip to the big game. Add this to the countless times this "defensive genius'" D gave up the big drive that cost the game (Tim Tebow, anyone?) Then there is the almost unbelievable moment where a weeping Rex admits he "lost the locker room and the team" !!!!!! Unreal. An NFL head coach admits he can't do his job? If I own that team, that guy is fired on the spot. Calling Ryan the second best coach in Jet history is like calling George W Bush the second best Bush to be president. Being the best of a group that sucks still means you suck. I will be glad when he is shown the door.
Another clock mishap with this guy. Its like everyone but him knows to call a timeout for some reason. Thank god we pulled out this win though.
Rex is helluva lucky coach, but NOT a hell of a coach. He will burden this team as he has in the past. I'd say if he and Sanchez got let go, people wouldn't be scooping them up like everyone thinks. And in time, we'll see Rex blow it for the team as he has in the past. Tell Sanchez to keep his headband and comments on the sideline with his buddy Rex. Geno will hopefully continue to grow and become Rex's saviour. Maybe he'll get a tattoo of Geno's jersey. D-bag!
That was brutal and inexcusable. Fortunately the Bucs were retarded and we won. I'll take it, but Rex needs to get his shit together.
