I don't believe he has to play great to win the job. I think he just needs to prove he's ready to play with the big boys and not fuck up with stupid plays.
I think if he can lead us down the field and get us 2 TD's and not turn the ball over, the job should be his.
I'm kind of in agreement with this. All Geno has to do is get over the very low bar Sanchez has set, e.g. don't make mental errors, don't make bad throws, don't turn the ball over as a result of the two factors above and he's set at this point. The Rex factor is real but I think if Smith doesn't disqualify himself over the next week he's probably going to win the job.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN 6m Geno Smith intercepted by Demario Davis on first play of second team session. Terrible pass intended for Hill #nyj Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN 5m Antonio Allen nearly picks off Geno's pass. Got two hands on it #nyj Cmon Geno.. Focus..
Bridgewater please... ESPN had a stat this morning that I found very interesting.. I don't remember it word for word or number for number but it went sort of like this... The past 8 or so years that a team had the league leader in sacks, they never went to the playoffs or Super Bowl or something to that effect. With that being said, without a QB in this league, you are not winning a SuperBowl. Gone are the days of the Bucs in 02 or the Ravens in 00. That aint happening no more.. Defense is all well and good but I would take Bridgewater any day over Clowney.. They are comparing this guy to Kearse... How many SuperBowls has Kearse won??
Geno, in my opinion, is not ready to be the starting QB. Unfortunately, Jets Nation needs to officially see it, so they will shut up about a QB competition. I watched Geno look flat out terrible against Big 12 defenses. The NFL did too, so he dropped to #39 overall. He can be good, just needs time to develop. Unfortunately, he was drafted to a city that will likely not allow that. The best thing would be to let him play with the 2's and continue to adjust to the NFL. However, he has to start, potentially fall on his face, so Jets fans can just accept Sanchez (still just an average QB) gives the team the best chance to win at the moment.
Randy Lange @rlangejets 30m 7-on-7: Geno Smith finds WR Michael Campbell in the back left corner of the EZ for a TD. Zipped it in past Antonio Cromartie, tight window. Jane McManus @janesports 48m Geno Smith looks sharper today with the 1s. Throws a nice long ball dropped by Hill. (A play earlier, Hill appeared to bang his knee.) #Jets
I completely agree with this. All Geno has to do is play turnover-free football and he could be the front-runner after the Giants game. Something like, 11-16, 150 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT's may very well be all the coaching staff needs to put Geno in front. With Rex coaching the D, all we need is our QB to not lead the league in TO's and we could have a surprisingly good year.
Seriously, and I mean this in all good faith, if Geno is not ready to start we're going to be watching Greg McElroy by about game 4 at the outside. Remember Vinny getting replaced in 2002 as the wheels were falling off early on? He was not replaced because the Jets knew Chad was ready. He was replaced because the Jets offense was sputtering after the opening game and he made a few mistakes along the way. The same thing is going to happen this season if Sanchez starts the year on the field. We're going to get some small number of games in and suddenly anybody but Sanchez is going to look better to everybody involved. There's a very simple question to ask Rex when he internally makes the case that Mark Sanchez gives him the best chance to win. That question is "then why aren't you winning?" That's a devastating question to have to answer.
I have figured out who Stephen Hill's new nickname...'Hot Hands' just like my boy from the Little Giants
He needs at the very least 2TD'd with no INTS. Anything less and he throws an INT, people are going to be raving about same old shit and shit can Geno. Even if he is a rookie.
In theory this is true. But if you pay attention to the language that Rex uses, he calls Sanchez the "incumbent" so if Geno plays like Sanchez then Mark could win by default.
That is a great point and a reason pulling Sanchez makes sense to me. If whatever he is doing is not enough to win, see if someone else can get the job done. I agree and have no problem with that.
2 TD drives from Geno with passes in stride and good plays will cement Geno into Starter. Sanchez is still going to play too, but likely against #2's. Geno cant afford an INT. Not one.
Yes, the key will be leading drives and showing signs of controlling the huddle. Sanchez is a good guy, and gets along with the players outside of football and probably in the locker room. On the football field he is a ticking INT time-bomb
