I was at the game Saturday. I gotta say, watching Sanchez play is pretty stressful. On the opening drive he threw some beautiful passes, one that was 100 percent on the money into triple coverage. He threw a nice TD to Jeremy Kerley. He threw another throw into triple coverage, but that time he was picked off in the endzone. The pick was bad, but not as bad as the brain dead decision to hold on to the ball with :05 seconds on the clock, instead of throwing it a way. Sanchez wants to make plays, but he tries to hard to do so instead of just throwing the ball away or scrambling back to the line of scrimmage. He seems to be doing a better job of holding on to the ball. He needs improvement getting the ball out, I think. There were several occasions where he could have hit open guys on the slant early, like Gabbart was doing. But instead Sanchez held on to the ball and went for guys deeper out. Sanchez struggles with those quick passes. He really needs to improve if he's gonna run the west coast offense. He's much better on the long balls than Gabbart, but Gabbart can get the ball out more quickly than Sanchez. Gabbart is underwhelming, if not efficient as a limited QB. Sanchez is more hit and miss. Other stuff: Ivory was a non-factor. Stephen Hill dropped moderate passes. Kerley was great and Gates was fantastic on the kick return. Powell looked good running the ball. On the second string, Braylon looked good. On third string, Spedola looks fantastic. Let's switch out Hill for Edwards, and get Spedola more play time. Rodgers wasn't catching but he was underwhelming on the punt returns. Simms looked alright. Maybe he gets cut soon, though. He played will but he was only really hitting wide open guys. He also made bad decisions and run the ball instead of throwing to guys who were wide open down the field. Maybe he isn't that confident in his ability to throw the ball? Our first string defense was truly pathetic -something I'm not used to seeing. Milliner needs more time to develop into a starter. And we were truly awful against the run. However we seemed to have some good depth at defense. Our second and third string guys looked great against Jacksonville's second and third string guys. Our defense won us the game, for sure. Anyway, this team has a long way to go, but things are already looking better under the new offense. I don't think we have a complete team on the field, but we have enough young talent and it's gonna be exciting to watch these players develop over the next couple seasons. Honestly I haven't felt this exciting about the Jets since we had Curtis Martin, Wayne Chrebet and Keyshawn Johnson on the roster. We have the young talent and the veteran talent at WR. All we need is our defense to mature into a full unit, one of our RB's to step up, and one of our QBs to develop into the players everyone thought they could be on draft day. Thoughts?
If (when) Geno gets his shot, he ends up being good enough that we wont have to draft a QB next year. The youngsters on offense like Stephen Hill, Bilal Powell, Chris Ivory, Jeff Cumberland. Take the next step. The youngsters on defense like Coples, Davis, Milliner, Wilson, Jarrett. Take the next step and can solidify themselves on this team.
other then that good post. I'm hoping Edwards stays on the roster this season but i feel like he's on the bubble, He will need to put up a good performance this weekend I think. As "brutal" as DeeMilli played he didn't give up any big plays. I think he was playing to conservative trying not to get beat. I think this is going to be easily correctable and he looked decent in tackling and didn't let his man get behind him often. He needs to do a better job in run support though. I think one of the most underrated parts of mevis' game was his run support / tackling. Real test next week against our neighbors in blue.
It was good to see a Jet offense actually LOOK LIKE a NFL OFFENSE for a change. I really didn't expect anything out of the ordinary from Hairband and sadly, I wasn't disappointed. Gates looked good, Braylon might be the only WR in football that can catch Hairband's errant throws. It would have been interesting to see Braylon try to catch passes from Tebow. Rex's #1 defense however, was underwhelming to say the least. A more effective offense would have shredded his Defense and no, Dennis Thurman doesn't get any heat as the defense belongs to Rex period. They had better work on the hurry up or the Jets will be irrelevant in short order given the early schedule. The Qb "competition" perhaps wasn't in the team's best interests as its now game 3 of preseason and there's still no starter. They should have made the decision one way or the other going in so they could have concentrated on installing MM's system instead of playing musical Qb's to see who will try and run it on the field. The upside to all of this is that there aren't any expectations from this Roster regarding playoffs. That being said, they have an entire season to get a workable plan about where this team is headed going forward. They absolutely must find out of Geno is "The One" or if not, get one of these so-called blue-chippers coming out in the next draft class. Without a solid QB, in this day and age of pass happy football, the Jets won't break their 45 year streak of no superbowl appearances anytime soon. While I have no expectations for 2013, I do have them for 2014 and beyond. The light has to come on at Jets HQ at some point. Better talent evaluation and vetting is a must.
Even though Mark's pass into triple coverage was right on the money, I still don't think he should be attempting those throws very often. If him and the receivers aren't perfect, that will get intercepted most of the time. It's great that it worked out, but I wouldn't like to see him doing that in the regular season unless it's a desperate situation. If someone is in triple coverage, that means at least one other guy is totally open.
Agree on Powell and Kerley. They both looked real good. This team is in a lot of trouble this year. I think Rex Ryan has lost his edge and he looks and sounds desperate. I hate to say it and it pains me to do so but this team has 5-11 written all over it. The only good part is that Rex and Sanchez will FINALLY be gone so we can truly start the rebuild.
If Hobbes was around he'd say... "System matters" No shit. But if you can't execute the basic plays and you still take high risk chances that hurt your team, then it becomes "Player matters". Sanchez just can't stop being Sanchez. He's a sheep in wolf's clothing.
Stephen Hill is a BUST - this kid frustrates the hell out of me - we are going to have "predict how many passes stephen hill drops" game threads Mcknight is a mess, i think its time to just call it a day I AM VERY EXCITED about Garrett McIntyre. Ive always thought he played above his potential and i hope he kills it while Q is out!!!!!!!
Stephen Hill looks a lot better than his rookie year. I wouldn't call him a bust at all. Sometimes for a raw WR, they tend to put it together in their 3rd season.
Hill so far is better than Chaz Schillens. We had a pile of steaming shit for Wr's last season. This year, we have chopped liver. I guess you could call that an improvement.
I still regard this year as a throwaway season which will, best case set us up for a very high draft pick, new starting QB and possibly new HC next season. I have zero hope for this team with Sanchez as a starter and I'm pretty sure that Geno isn't ready yet. Whether he is the long-term answer remains to be seen but I have been doubtful ever since we selected him. I don't think it was a wasted pick because we got value for where he was selected. However; I have to believe there is a better QB out there in what will be a deeper 2014 draft. As for Ryan? I think we've definitely had worse coaches and I'm not screaming for his head at this point mostly because there isn't another coach out there that screams "hire me!". We shall see...
Agreed. Our biggest challenge this year is DEF. Much bigger than the QB controversy or any other OFF issues.
so sounded like the OP is onboard with powell & the young wr's outside of hill ... but besides depth on D there wasn't much else on the + side i agree that powell looks fast & smooth so far this preseason you did seem to be cautious on your optimism which i'd say is a good idea for 2013 ... we will need to have a lot of things go right (starting with Geno's performance against the Giants) in order for this year to have any post-season potential if watching the young kids go through some growing pains as they come together on both sides of the ball is your anticipation this year over W-L record then there is a good chance that you will be more & more excited as the year goes on
