I think it is VERY important for Sanchez to play well tonight. Next week too of course, but he needs to get this fanbase back. Many won't let go of 2012 or the buttfumble, so he needs to show them that he can still lead this team. Average play will not be good enough. Clearly bad play will get him booed out of MetLife. He needs to play great.
Sanchez must do very well tonight, then play lights out against Giants 1st D next week, to secure his starting job. Anything short of that - he's a goner. Starting point is tonight - to get to the next test, he has to get there first. Also, if he can play like a good QB in the face of fierce Giants' pass rush, then there is no reason to bench him either.
With the importance of the starting offense (and starting QB) getting all 3 qtrs in next week, I would not fault Idzik if he makes the call Monday morning. It seems like it's Sanchez's job to lose tonight. If he plays decent he could be named starting QB monday morning, and get all 3 qtrs next week. If Mark has 'one of those really bad 4-5 int games', I could see Geno being named the starter with Mark taking 0 snaps next week. It's not so much that Geno has shown he's the future, it's more a case of Mark showing he's not, for the last time. And if that happens, I think Geno is named the starter on Monday and gets the whole game next week.
This is the problem though. A really bad game is 2 int's not 4 or 5. We're just conditioned to having Sanchez "bad" games be a ton of turnovers when in fact a QB that turns the ball over twice has usually mortally screwed his team. You know what I want to see from Sanchez? ZERO turnovers. I want him to play like a QB that understands that turning the ball over is the worst thing you can do on the football field if you are a QB. He still doesn't get that because he still makes really stupid decisions on a regular basis that then add on to the bad throws that cause turnovers.
Here's where it gets interesting with BigMac. IF IF IF Mark bombs tonight, and Geno is named the starter (of if Geno wins the competition outright) that leaves Mark and BigMac battling for #2. The arguments ppl on here have made lately of BigMac being better than Mark make more sense when talking about the back up roll. There's certain things all teams need in a BU QB: 1- Can he start hot, say mid game, or does he need half a game or even 1 or 2 games to get going? You want your BU QB able to hit the ground running on a seconds notice. 2- Will he provide a spark to the offense? How will the rest of the offense respond to him? 3- How much film or knowledge does the opposing DC have on your BU QB? You want your BU QB to be an enigma...with talents and traits he can exploit out of the gate. While Mark may be better over a 16 game season, BigMac may be more of a spark coming in for a 1/2 game or 2. And if that happens, then BigMac is one tweaked throwing ankle from becoming the staring QB for the NY Jets.
I hear ya, but I'm creating a scenario where there's no gray area. One int leaves a lot of gray area. 3-4-5 ints does not. IF Mark has one of his trademark BAAAAAD games, I can see Geno being named starter on Monday and GMac being named BU.
And what I'm saying is that there's no gray area if he throws a pick or two either. Mark Sanchez main problem is the turnovers. If he can't fix that problem he's a drag on the team. Everything else is manageable if a bit subpar but the turnovers are killing the Jets and they've been killing the Jets since Sanchez arrived on the scene. The Jets record when Sanchez throws at least 1 int is 18-25 including the playoffs. When he throws a pick the Jets are a losing team. When he throws no picks the Jets are 18-6. He has to have many, many more games where he throws no picks. He can't keep throwing them and have the Jets be anything but a losing team.
Every game is important for him. While Geno is hurt, the worse he plays shortens his leash come regular season time. What I am looking for tonight from him: -More of that 3rd Lions drive. Quick, decisive, and good throws. On the receiver and leading, not forcing them to turn around, stop their momentum, etc. -No turnovers and no fumbles even if the Jets recover. Protect the football.
I don't think Sanchez can win the job tonight, Geno will still get his chance in week 3; but Sanchez can definitely lose the job tonight.
You're probably right, even Rex has said the competition could move to week 3. But to do so would put Regular Season Game 1 in jeopardy. Naming his starter Monday, and giving that man the 3rd week in practice with the 1's and the 3rd pre-season game to gell with the stating offense gives the Jets the best shot out of the gate against the Bucs at home. Morningwig has seen enough. Unless Mark bombs to night, he gets the call. If he bombs? It's Geno. Again, it's not that Geno has shown himself to be the future, just that Mark would have shown himself NOT to be the future.
I don't believe Idzik will allow a starter to be named until Geno has had a chance with the ones on the game-field. Perhaps I overestimate how much control Idzik has, however.
If Geno does get a fair chance, that proves how little power Wrecks has, because we know Sandwedge is his baby
You don't "win the job when your opponent doesn't get an opportunity to play. That would be more like "given" the job.
Sanchez is playing well in game 2 thus far. At this point I can live with Sanchez starting week 1 if he continues to play like that.
