People forget that the '09 surge at the end prominently featured the D and running game propelling Kellen Clemens to a convincing 26-3 win over the Bucs in week 14. Rex had the team firing on all cylinders but QB down the stretch and they hid the QB well enough to win without getting major contributions from the most important position on the field over a 9 week period. They went 8-1 over that span with the QB's doing about half the minimum expectation for the position. That's the Rex that can get the Jets a Super Bowl win. They just haven't had the team since 2009 to make it happen. 2010 the team declined a bit and Sanchez stepped up a bit and the mix was nearly the same. Since then it's just been a steady decline across the board.
He called Sanchez out in the past. If that pick 6 was the only thing Sanchez did in the game, your question would be legit. However MS recovered from that INT and had overall an OK game. How do you expect HC to call QB's performance brutal when it in fact wasn't? RR has a working knowledge of the offense otherwise he wouldn't be as good DC as he is.
Fucking brilliant commentary! What an enlightening argument. Bad tattoo choices = bad coach = fire his ass. Note to self: IGNORE ANYONE WHO STILL HAS "REVIS" AS ANY PART OF THEIR ID.
I agree I loved Rex, but I see he is not a head football coach. Ryan has no idea how to handle a QB or be balanced with his team, seems very bi-polar like in his approach to head coaching.
After a season like that it is highly unlikely to hide the QB forever, at some point your QB has to be able to put the team on his shoulders and win games.
Greene is alright, but I like Chris Ivory a lot more. He can be shifty, and he doesn't have just one more. If he can stay healthy, he'll be like Michael Turner back when he first joined the Falcons. As long as Goodson is out there opening night, that's all that matters to me at this point. We need RBs that can catch the football most importantly. "McNugz" unfortunately is a mess - I wondering if he'll even make the roster at this juncture.
Who should have been playing QB the past four seasons? Brunnell? Tebow? McElroy? Now that there is a viable option to Sanchez we will see that Sanchez will be out of a job if he plays poorly. In the past, the Jets had NOBODY to play QB but Sanchez.
This team got hammered by injuries real early on last year. That was compounded by the fact that Sanchez had one of the worst years of all time for a starting QB. I don't think any coach in the game could offset that much bad luck. I don't know what management wants to see from Rex this year to warrant another season, but I'd be shocked if we didn't see a significant improvement from last year.
Obviously Rex should be in the HOF. Anyone not smart enough to see that should be sent back to 4th grade. Give him a 5 year extension and make him GM too. Better yet, give Rex 50.1% of the team so he can't be fired no matter what.
His blind spot on Sanchez is like the biggest reddest pimple on his nose at this point. The thing that cost Buddy his career as a head coach was his stubborn streak on talent decisions. Apparently it's going to do the same thing to Rex, which is a shame. Like his old man he's got more defensive know-how in his little finger than 99% of the coaches who have ever coached. And it won't matter if he can't manage the most important position on the field appropriately.
There are many good arguments on both sides, the reason I wanted him fired is when I found out he was taking control of the draft room and influencing MT and not letting the work of the scouts determine best player on board. Which in turn led the jets into the high risk high gamble drafts that hurt them in the long run, what we see on the field on offense today is a direct reflection of RR.
