The Jets cannot rework or extend Mo Wilk's deal until after the 2013 season has concluded. No rookie deal can be redone until after a player's third season in the NFL. It's in the CBA. I'd expect the Jets to work out an extension with Mo Wilk after the 2013 season. It will likely be the organization's most important priority next off season unless Geno Smith goes very off course between now and then.
I understand that Coples is versatile to the point of being able to play lots of OLB as an edge rusher but I believe the draftings of both Wilkerson and Coples will become as successful as Abraham and Ellis. Hopefully this time, we hold on to both of Coples and Wilkerson long term without allowing one to slide between the cracks (Abe). Now thinking about it, I think we're set at both 3-4 DE and 4-3 DE for many of years to come with both of Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson as 3-4 DE's along with Coples and Wilkerson as 4-3 DE's. Richardson may only be a rookie but at 6'3/294 pounds this man is a beast also ranked as one of the highest rated defensive lineman coming out. He reminds me of a Ndamukong Suh type coming out (build and athletic wise). Where am I going with this? Coples and Wilkerson as a duo can become deadly for years to come. Wilkerson is developing into a great DE heading into his 3rd season. During his rookie season he put up 49 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 1 forced fumble. Last year as a second year player Wilk put up 69 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. For a 3-4 DE? This is Richard Seymour type of production. Wilkerson has combined for 118 tackles, 8 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. During Seymour's first two seasons Richard combined for 100 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 0 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. So as we can see, Wilkerson is well on his way to a great NFL career and/or came out of the gates guns blazing. Lastly. Quinton Coples. As a rookie put up 30 tackles and 5.5 sacks. I'm expecting a 60 tackles, 8+ sacks type of season from Coples here in year number two. Sorry to derail I know this was about Wilkerson but just the thought of our defensive line/front 7 amps me up when in regards to the likes of Muhammad Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, Sheldon Richardson, Quinton Coples, (the speed of) DeMario Davis, our leader in David Harris along with a duo of Barnes/Pace rushing opposite of Coples. Potential is sky high and yes, I believe as of right now Wilkerson is our best defensive player (right up there with Harris and Cromartie impact wise).
I saw a good player in MO last year, I did not see greatness that everyone says occurred. I am not playing devils advocate, did he really flash greatness last year? I remember Coples turning it on towards the end of the year. We never hear about Ellis, this should be his year also, year # 3 and all that stuff behind him. Damm, can these guys make up for Wilson and Vlad, those two make me sick
Just make sure you ignore the safety position because that kinda knocks down the top 10 defense theory. To bad we didn't sign last years safeties. We would be cooking with gas
After the Sanchez and Holmes deals are off our books. Whose else is getting overpaid. Harris and maybe Cro? We need to extend Mo after this year
Harris is overpaid, but he's valuable. Cromartie should get his deal restructured to add more yrs and more cap space for next off-season.
If Harris has a good year this year the Jets will probably try to retain him for a few more seasons. If he doesn't he's probably going to be a cap and compensation cut next year. He's 30 in January and the most important factor for the Jets is likely to be what he does in 2013.
I think he can be cut with little to no cap penalties next year, you'd have to check. If he plays well, he may end up doing what Pace did this year, probably with higher pay, but he's not worth anywhere near $11 million. He was grossly overpaid with that contract. Depending on how this seasons plays out, Sanchez's ridiculous contract could come off the books too. Hell, he may still get cut if he starts and has a good season.
I mean, Landry was a pretty big loss, but his brother should fill Bell's spot pretty easily. Jarrett has been playing great in camp and Bush/Allen were both decent role players last year. I don't think we necessarily need to have great safeties in Rex's system because the safeties play run support for the most part. That could also change due to the loss of Revis. If Milliner plays well man-to-man this year, I don't think our weakness at safety will be that noticeable.
The guyy always leads the team in tackles, he is def valuable, it's not like starting Mlb's grow on trees in the draft
La Canfora is about to be on Joe & Evan on WFAN to discuss that article. Coming up after the commercial break.
He sounds real high on Richardson; says he looked freakish at camp. And also said Ellis' development has been something the coaches are happy with (ftr, Ellis tweaked his back while lifting).
