Do you guys even watch the Jets? Do you have a bad memory? Pretty clear why I or other fans would feel that way about Holmes.
Because you're a Sanchez fanboy and took exception to Tone arguing with Bumchez in the huddle after he threw two INTs to Miami's nose tackle?
I am a Jets fanboy. Yes, that was sad to see a player on my own team act like that though. He hasn't been the same since he got paid. I wish 2010 Tone would have stuck around. PS: Funny how you would blame Santonio's actions that game on Sanchez. The Steelers didn't get rid of him because of his talents. We have seen why the last few seasons.
He may be a loose cannon but hes fuckin skilled. Hes a Super Bowl MVP and has made some of the sickest catches Ive ever seen, many of them in the playoffs. I can understand the frustration he had that yr watching Sanchez make retarded decision after retarded decision because I shared that frustration. Many of the great, clutch plays Sanchez fanboys point to in his illogical defense were actually outstanding plays by Santonio Holmes. @DET, @CLE, HOU, @NE. He is a damn good football player. Getting in an argument in the last week of the season and being forced to hear about it all offseason does not change that for me. The media blew that out of proportion and since then he has not been the only one to question Mark's play.
Dang it, there goes the virtual vegas bets on how many ball drops he will have per game after a first down reception like he climbed Mt. Everest.
What actions? He got into an argument with Hunter in the huddle and got benched by Schotty. He was pissed off and let it get the best of him. Shit happens. He didn't quit on the team, as the popular slogan goes from the Holmes haters. After all the money we invested in Holmes he wasn't even the focal point of the offense. Schotty caused that entire incident by not playing to our strengths, plus hunter got Sanchez permanently shell shocked during that year. He hasn't been the same since midway through 2011. Holmes brings a HUGE plus to the offense, I can't believe people are screaming to cut him after what he did for us in 2010. I hope he gets well and gets back as soon as possible. It's interesting seeing the depth chart with Hill as #1 and Kerley as #2. Throwing Holmes in the mix would be crucial, especially with the way the youngsters are progressing.
As much as you hate wild media speculation and embrace facts, I find it odd you are delving into so much speculation as to the whys of what Holmes did when we know the "what" of the situation. You asked "what actions?" when you already knew the answer. Holmes isn't the first person in the league to get frustrated by poor circumstances. However he is one of the only ones to let it boil over and act like a douche on the playing field. Plenty of players play entire seasons knowing the season is down the tubes and don't act like that. Don't bail him out for not acting like a grownup The funny thing is that you seem to blame Wayne Hunter more, when from all indications, it isn't his fault that he sucks. He just isn't that good. And the Jets made him a starter when he shouldn't have been. But you are declaring Holmes' bad decisions that are completely his fault, as "shit happens". Yeah, shit happens when you are a shitty guy.
My point was that the argument in the huddle wasn't equivalent to Holmes "quitting" on the team as people keep spouting. The Holmes hate is blown out of proportion. I never said that he couldn't have handled it better, he let his frustration get the best of him during a really emotional game. Yes, it DOES happen. He came back in 2012 playing with the fire until he got injured. People act like he changed drastically from 2010 to 2011 when he got the contract. I think that's a load of crap. Schotty was a terrible OC and most of the problems spawned from him. HE lost the pulse of the offense and Rex took the blame.
Lets not forget that hatchet was buried a long time ago. And that the NY media was doing their thing.... this kind of stuff does happen once in a while it just became all the more magnified it being the NY Jets. Soon after the Miami meltdown Mehta gave birth to the anon sourced articles. Holmes may have a temper but hes skilled, easily our best player on offense when healthy. I take exception to Sanchez fanboy calling him a joke in defense of Sanchez when it is Sanchez who has made this team a walking punchline. No WR has ever had a 1000 yd season with Sanchez as their pivot, its not easy to work with him and it can be very frustrating.
Soon after giving Holmes a lucrative contract, Rex named him a captain of the team. Most players who give a shit about anybody besides themselves would take that responsibility seriously and use it as motivation to grow as a player and leader. What did Holmes do? Well, besides the on-field meltdown that was well documented for everyone to see, we can only speculate. But the fact is that he fucked it up badly enough that Rex publicly acknowledged he made a mistake in naming Holmes a captain and even went as far as abandoning the whole concept of team captains for the foreseeable future. These are indisputable facts. The idea that he just momentarily "let his frustrations get to him" is ridiculous. Even if you cast aside the blatant displays of poor teamwork, selfishness, and bad leaderships as being things that "just happen when you are on a shitty team", there are a number of other clues throughout his career that indicate he has never been any different. He has made some big plays, some of them in critical situations for the Jets, but how much evidence do you need before you acknowledge that someone is a shitty leader and teammate?
First of all,SPECULATE is the big word. It was never revealed what was said in that infamous huddle.. But lets remember that the Jets were choking badly..the offense didn't show up on a day they really needed. Is their really such a crime in showing some emotion? Sure he let it get the better of him & got booted from the game by his own coach..but I bet there were plenty of Jet fans having similar reactions to Holmes behavior in that huddle. Secondly, Rex & many young players in the organization have recognized him for his leadership both on & off the field. Rex said he didn't like the idea of having a labeled captains in the first place.Don't go pinning it on Santonio. That's not to say he isn't a diva w/ a bit of an attitude. That much is true. But every team has divas & you need divas just like you need boy scouts & jesus freaks.
Id need evidence like a former or current teammate saying he is a shitty teammate. Nobody ever called him a strong leader, but methinks RR abolished the captains mainly so that the media would fuck off about it. Regardless, he was actually having a decent start in 2012 before going down and had worked with Nacho exclusively in the offseason. He also spent time showing the ropes to Kerley and Hill. I dont think he is a cancer, although definitely a loose cannon. He is overpaid because Tannenbaum was trigger happy. I think his skills justify him being on any roster and will be happy when he is back. This man delivers in big moments.
Yeah, it pretty much was: http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...ptain-santonio-holmes-quit-new-york-jets-loss Please... this is the biggest PR cop-out in the history of the world. After a year in which he named Santonio Holmes a captain, then Holmes publicly blamed the OL for losses, then reportedly wasn't putting in effort during the week near the end of the season, then got in a heated argument with his own teammates on the field for giving up while the game was still in reach, Rex suddenly decides that he "didn't like the idea of captains"? Yeah, I'm sure that had nothing at all to do with Holmes. Just pure coincidence. And I'm sure Holmes was behaving like an angel aside from those things I just listed. The problem isn't that he reacted poorly due to a frustrating game, or as you call it "showed emotion". The problem is that he had a poor attitude throughout a good chunk of the season, and according to most people who are capable of connecting the dots, throughout most of his career. Players feed off of each other's effort and motivation. Make no mistake, Santonio Holmes' behavior in 2011 was one of the reasons why the Jets had a disappointing season, it wasn't just a result of it. I'm sure he has done plenty of good things to go along with the bad, but unfortunately being a good teammate isn't like playing the stock market where 10 good investments can make up for 5 bad ones. Being a good teammate requires consistently being there for your teammates, consistently backing them up, consistently leading by example, etc. Anyone with two eyes and a functioning brain should be able to figure out that these are things that Holmes hasn't done. No, teams don't need divas. Most of them put up with one or two simply because those players are worth the hassle, which IMO Holmes isn't. I'm not arguing that he isn't a good player (although I've considered him overrated for a very long time), and I'm not saying the Jets should have cut him. I'm just responding to the posts excusing his detrimental behavior to his teams and defending his character.
A large amount of your argument relies on loose connections and speculation. LT was obviously embellishing to try to get his sport analyst career launched. You can't take it at face value. Holmes did call out the offensive line, but who cares? He was right. He was trying to motivate them. Wayne Hunter was horrible that year and damn near got Sanchez killed on multiple occasions. He probably thought he was doing the right thing since Rex refused to ever say anything negative about his players. Since the incident he has done all the right things... except get injured.
the fact that he can be a prima donna wr who threw a tantrum 2 yrs ago has nothing to do with whether he's actually seriously injured to the extent that he should not / cannot play football. He suffered a very serious injury that is difficult to recover from. I'm still waiting to hear about the credentials of the TGG Medical Team that has concluded that Holmes is 100% recovered and should play regardless of everything the medical experts who are actually treating the injury have advised.
Loose connections and speculation? I'm taking the blinders off my eyes and making judgements based on comments from multiple sources and Santonio Holmes' overall body of work over his entire career. Like I said, it is a fact that Rex Ryan named Holmes a captain , which was followed by Holmes making multiple questionable leadership decisions throughout the season, which was then followed by Rex suddenly deciding to no longer name captains. Do you really, truly believe that those events are "loosely connected"? I used Tomlinson's quotes because he is a reputable player who was more specific than anyone else. Other players had similar things to say though. Even if you don't like Cimini and Mehta's anonymous quotes, I think you'll agree that Adam Schefter doesn't make a habit of reporting bullshit from questionable sources, and he is the one that reported a player said that Holmes "quit" on the team. Other players weren't quite as specific or obvious with their remarks, but they still left little to the imagination. Being a leader isn't about assigning the blame to the right people, especially not publically. That's how you lose the respect of the people you are leading, and kill any motivation that they had to play hard for you. It's about working together within the organization to help everyone reach their potential. Brandon Moore said that Holmes' comments created a rift in the locker room, and I think it's pretty obvious he was right. Obviously Moore was upset by those comments, and Sanchez was too: and so was Slauson: Am I really "speculating" in thinking that the Jets' locker room was divided because of Holmes' actions? Am I just making "loose connections"? Since the incident he has said the right things and played a total of 4 games, including 2 stinkers and one mediocre performance. Is that supposed to be indicative of a turnaround in effort? I'm not impressed by someone acting like a leader for a minute at a time in front of cameras. Plus, stress and frustration are practically non-existent in the first 4 games of a season. The end of last season when the Jets were struggling would have been a much better indication.
Yawn. They said it was a "toxic" locker room, it wasn't. They said Sanchez and Holmes "hate" each other, they don't. It's just media blowing shit out of proportion in typical NYDN fashion. Nothing to see here. 2011 was a bad year, the media kicked us while we were down. This team gets more exposure than any other, and because of that you get this kind of bullshit. It has nothing to do with Santonio Holmes as a football player at this point. His teammates don't hate him, he has said he wants to be a Jet, he worked with teammates in the offseason and hasn't gotten into any trouble off the field since being here. I look forward to his return and his future as a NYJ, hopefully with a better QB enabling his skillset.
