I think Gruden I heard call him "The Sheriff" when he had him on his show.

That'd work...as long as he stays out of jail.

Not too much to work with from a knickname standpoint. Mean Gene, Geno 911, Genotype (the genetic make-up of our offense), The Great Bamgeno.

What do you expect from a college QB who did not play in a pro set offense in college and has not even gone through training camp yet???????

Since when do we judge rookie QBs by May and June minicamps??????

The early evaluations and baseless predictions of the QB Smith will or will not become are absurd.

Let's talk in 2-3 years about how good Smith is or will be, but to discuss it now with even the slightest bit of certainty is complete BS.

Yep. I mean Russel Wilson was 3rd string heading into August, so things can change... and they can change quickly.

Is there a website that shows the percentage of plays that a team runs out of shotgun?

I've read articles online stating that there are teams like the Lions who play shotgun over 65% of their snaps, and there are plenty of teams that employ the shotgun for more than 50% of their snaps. But I can't find a website that actually lists them.

The point I was trying to research was, if the divide between the "gimmick" college offense and the NFL is shrinking. We already see the Pats take cues from Oregon with their hurry up offense, and pretty much all of the high scoring offenses seem to have a high amount of shot gun formations to it. But I can't find stats stating the frequency in which teams used shotguns besides some articles from 2011.

If more and more teams are using shotguns, then the adjustment period for Smith isn't as great as it would seem from the past since he's already used to it. One of the reasons Sanchez was so highly thought of was because he played in a pro system, but I think the system itself is changing now. Teams are going more fast paced, shotgun based, which could mean that, atleast system wise, Smith isn't as far behind as you'd imagine him to be. FWIW, Michael Vick had a top 10 rating out of the shotgun last year.

From watching Sanchez, I think he's sort of a jack of some trades, master of none type QB. He doesn't have accuracy, but his arm is OK. He doesn't have superior athleticism, but he can run a little bit in emergencies. Smith atleast has some attributes where you know he has a better arm, better accuracy, and better athleticism. I believe Sanchez was supposed to have the mental acumen to take his rather average tools and become a player that was greater than the sum of his parts, and we've seen how that works out. Infact, Barkley is in the exact same boat, IMO.

I'm not sure how Rex and MM are going to run the offense, but Rex did mention that he wanted an attacking offense. So if he runs a more spread system like Philly did, Geno might already be better suited for it than Sanchez, while having better physical tools.

Also, on the offense at WV, they pretty much had no run game whatsoever. Teams were dropping as many as possible into coverage, which forced them to resort to the underneath stuff as often as they did. I believe their top RB, Buie, had 6 games where he didn't even get 50 yards rushing, because of a shaky OL and lack of ability.

All of this is moot for now, since the competition will be decided in camp, but I think Geno wins it. As far as nicknames go, not really much to play with Geno. The Book of Genosis could make sense as some kinda signal of a new start, but it's too long and religiously tied to work out.

My point was that the fact that Sanchez can't separate from Smith at this point tells us most of what we need to know about Sanchez potential to turn things around and do well this year. That potential is very low.

It's possible that all things considered the Jets are better off going with a bad veteran QB than throwing a raw rookie to the wolves at the start of the season. We just need to understand that unless something very surprising occurs in camp, with one of the QB's looking good in a sustained performance over the course of the camp, we're going to start with a bad placeholder the first few games and things are likely to be very dicey all year.

This was Sanchez spring to put the doubts to rest. Instead he magnified them.

    Bullshit Hobbes.

Your point is that there isnt even a competition because your butt buddy is doing great and only has to work on cutting down the fumbles- everything other facet of his game is good. Oh, and that Geno Smith is a shitty QB prospect that only put up impressive stats because of Tavon Austin. I believe I summed that up correctly.

Go back and read what I wrote, all the way along.

I think Sanchez os an NFL QB, though one that has underperformed, and will perform in this offense.

    And

That Geno ahouldnt be tossed in yet, because of the distatse for Sanchez.

Ive said repeatedly "why ruin a second QB."

Ive also said, repeatedly that if Sanchez does perform under Marty, and Geno grows, the team will not have to make a decision, for 3 years, and would be set at QB for a decade.

Its you that seems to need your diva on stage no matter the cost to him or the team.

From all indications (from the coaching staff) he has. Nothing has been magnified just the media stirring up controversy where Sanchez clearly outperformed Geno.

Training camp we will see long way to go. Why rush a rookie 2nd round QB let the kid learn to be an NFL QB. The only thing to lose is that Sanchez plays well.

Only fr the genomaniacs. If Sanchez performs well, geno has time to develop his talent, and the team is set for years,

Keeping Geno off the field till its time to renegotiate, helps the Jets.

But..we have Jets fans, and Geno fans, apparently

No, it really isnt. Guys make it to the pros on physical talent, because prior to that level certain flaws didnt stand out.

The fact that it hasnt been addressed is an indictment of the former coaching staff....
