I don't understand why so many people are slamming Sather. You don't think he had a team with enough talent this year?

Nope. Maybe before they traded Gabby, but you can't expect to throw a team with so many new players on to the ice during a lockout season and expect them to instantly play lights out. I'm only a casual hockey fan, I don't watch every game, but it seemed that Sather intended for Torts to be fired before the year started. Just sayin. The Rangers switch up their offensive go to guy every couple years, regardless of how they play. It happened with Jagr, then Gabby, and in a few years I suspect Nash as well. You can't just get rid of guys because they don't win titles right away. Gabby was one of the top dogs in the league last year. I was shocked at all the changes we made after the best season in about a decade. That just doesn't seem very smart to me. That's like the Knicks trading Carmelo this off season. It won't happen.

Good point Barcs, with the lockout and the shortened season they struggled with cohesion the whole year

The good news is they acknowledge that the roster construction is flawed.
The bad news is they "fix" it by building it the same exact way, just with different faces.

Sather, for whatever reason, has always tried building this team around overpaid wingers. With the emergence of Stepan and possibly the resurgance of Brassard, as well as good minor leaguers like Lindberg and Miller, he might be forced to realize that building a team around young and/or homegrown center depth has and always will be the greatest recipe for success.

You'd think a guy who coached a dynasty with Gretzky and Messier might realize this.

Watch AV go tot he Stars, Sather will panic and hire Messier...He will release it was a bad move and retire after next season.

Torts goes on to get fired after calling the Canucks owner "useless" midway through the season

Small improvement in Michael Sauer, flew into NY for re-evaluation, at least he can fly now

A nearly man with a proven ability to fail in a big market when the pressure's on, even when he has a top notch roster with quality goaltending and offensive firepower.

    Wouldn't be my choice.

The outcome will be no different in NY. He’s not my top choice either. Actually, I am not happy with any of the people they are perusing

I dunno, that could be an interesting one. Good age, spent all his career in good systems, already spent a bit of time as a head coach making mistakes elsewhere, knows what it's like to be around a winning franchise. Sounds a lot more promising than retreads like Ruff and Vigneault, and certainly worth an interview.

Stevens would be the smart hire.

    Sather doesn't do smart hires.
