Or its a least being considered, direct from the mighty mouth of Rex. We all remember how putting in another QB worked so well last year, but to be fair its a new Coordinator who might be able to institute this sort of setup smartly rather than some of the nonsense placement that was done last year. It takes some gaul to consider trying this again though, but what strikes me the most is how this might impact the QB competition. hadn't seen it talked about so far, what does this mean to any of you?
Just as long as its not done in awkward situations like they did with Tebow last year. If the Jets are winning (or losing) by a significant amount, let Geno close out the game. Otherwise, don't break up whatever momentum Sanchez does have, unless he's playing like utter garbage.
This is off-season filler. There's no reason to believe that Geno Smith is going to be all that effective running a read-option. The Jets would have to teach him the offense, since he didn't play in it in college, and it would be a major investment on their part to do so. It's just Rex BS. If he was talking about a Geno Smith Run and Shoot package that might be a different story.
Kaepernick played out of the Pistol Read Option in college. Having him run that for the 49ers as a sideshow made sense.
Listening to stuff like this makes me think the Jets should just get Geno signed and cut Mark Sanchez ASAP. Making decisions about how to use the young guy they just drafted based on keeping Sanchez around seems to be about as unwise a direction to go as possible at this point.

Coming from someone who has been to every WVU home game over the past 4 years, I have maybe seen Geno run with the football 25 times. And this is over the course of 40 starts. He has very little experience running with the ball in his hands, which leads me to believe that this is more bark than bite coming from Rex.
If Geno runs MM's offense, and they sprinkle in some variant read option looks to the equation, then i'm on board. If Sanchez is starting, i don't want to see Geno substituting in much.
As soon as I read this I thought to myself "Rex, STF up already!". Just got this sinking feeling in my gut. Just stay focused on improving your team and not talk. You're just setting yourself up to be fired with your mouth and no ass to back up anything. Look at our team now. In rebuild mode. We should be strictly business and not talk about any strategy, what you might do, what this person can do, I really like this team and all that other bs. STF up.
It won't make things any different. We've used the read option for the last 5-6 years. First it was Brad Smith, then it was Kerley, last year Teblow, and now maybe Kerley or Geno Smith. Remember, just because Rex Ryan might be open to it, doesn't mean MM will run it often or anything like that. Honestly I've always hated WC and read option. Let's just stick with one system for now until we can get that squared away. I wouldn't even think about read option until next year or maybe late in the season.
The Jets have never run the read option. They run a wildcat that is predicated on the QB being able to run with the ball. There have been maybe a half dozen plays over the last 5 years where somebody other than the QB has wound up with the ball out of that formation.
Please inform the rest of us when the Jets have EVER run the read option the past few years. Do you know what the read option is?
I like Rex as a coach, but someday he's gotta take a page out of the Belichek book of dealing with the press and shut up. He spent all off-season keeping the Tebow package under wraps, then implemented it and had it blow up in his face. Now he wants to resurrect this junk. Let Geno develop into a real qb, not a gimmick in a gimmick offense.
I'm a WVU alum so I've watched 80% of Geno's games in college. He's not a running quarterback. Just because he's black doesn't mean we should put in a read option package for him. He is mobile and will escape some sacks but he's a pocket passer. Think Steve Young in terms of mobility not RG3 or Mike Vick.
Idzik said a day or two after taking Smith in the draft that he had told Smith to be ready to run the read option. While Smith is athletic and runs a fast 40, I don't see where he has shown ability to run the ball with any instinct or awareness. Rather he has had problems in these areas especially pocket awareness. I have watched him run the ball a very limited number of times and he does not look at all close to being a natural ball runner. Not to mention his small hand size is an additional worry. While it appears the Jets and Idzik took Smith to make him a multi-dimensional threat, I don't see him being a good fit for that type of role. I hope Idzik and the FO is right on this matter.
