i voted for curtis martin because he is just amazing as a person and a player. i also voted for joe klecko because he was so much fun to watch back in the early 80s when i started watching the jets. my final 2 votes i am surprised got so few votes. i chose freeman mcneil and wesley walker. these 2 guys were the guys who really got me and made me a jets fan, especially freeman. while they were not hall of famers they were great jets. i put them in front of guys like winston hill, don maynard, weeb ewbank and yes joe namath only because i never watched those guys play live, they were all before my time so how can i vote for them?
You excluded Revis because he may play many years away from the team. Mangold could decline next season, the Jets could find an amazing center in next years draft, and then they trade him away for picks. Do you chisel his face off of the mountain? There is a reason why the vast vast majority of monuments, which Mt Rushmore is, are created years after the person they are commemorating is gone. "Gone", in this case, is retired.
From Wikipedia. Hall of Fame Ewbank is the only man ever to coach two different American Professional Football teams to victory in a championship game, and the only man to coach winners of NFL, AFL, and World Championships: (NFL championships in 1958 and 1959 with the Colts, an AFL championship in 1968 with the Jets, and a World Championship in Super Bowl III in 1969 with the Jets). His record in the AFL was 50-42-6 (71-77-6 all-time with the Jets); his career regular season record in the NFL and AFL was 130-129-7; and his playoff record was 4-1. Ewbank was selected as the Head Coach of the AFL All-Time Team. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame and the Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame. I obviously voted for Ewbank, I also voted for the other two Hall Of Fame'rs.
hey i was disappointed al toon who was a much better receiver than wayne chrebet wasnt in the poll. i didnt pitch a fit about it though.
Lots of honorable mentions Larry Grantham, Al Atkinson, Ralph Baker, Verlon Biggs, George Sauer, Matt Snell, Emerson Boozer, Big Bad John Elliott, Lance Mehl, Joe Fields, Dan Alexander, Marvin Powell, Freeman Mcneil, Gastineau, Kyle Clifton, Randy Rasmussen, Wesley Walker...etc...
Absolutely! He was the face of those early 80s teams whether we want to admit it or not. Magnificent at times..but you took the good with some bad.But that's the F'N Jets!
Revis played basically 5 full seasons for us, Mangold has played 7 and is signed for many more years. mangold could decline but he played many years as one of the best C's in the game just as mawae did but he's done it all as a Jet. last I checked I am not actually chiseling their faces into a mountain so it is all subject to change:beer:. Maybe Revis gets released in a year or 2 and comes back and regains his form? then we are talking about adding him. Again, I think revis is the BEST player we have EVER had but he hasn't played here long enough. Unfortunately many years after the Jets stop playing football we won't be around to vote on it so we are having fun doing it now This is something we could do every few years and it could change. Whenever Chrebet coms up Jet fans overrate him but I think I'd probably have Wayne ahead of toon for this vote. It's not just best player, it's also kind of faces of the franchise. It was tough cutting either but I don't think either would be in the top 4.
I took the great player from each successful Jets era with the 60's having two of them. Weeb belonged also because without him the Jets would not have won a Super Bowl yet.
This. I actually just picked the same 3 in the poll. Those 3 players were all league-wide stars in their era, they span every decade and almost the entire history of the franchise besides the last 8 years or so. Edit: Looking at the poll numbers now as well as the responses and it seems like this is majority opinion.
