New York September 1, 2013, watching in living room: Rex: OK, first of all I want to let everyone know that Mark will be the starting QB next Sunday. We just feel...I'll tell you this: Mark did everything that was asked of him this offseason, I mean he was the first guy in and the first guy out. No one worked harder. He just really dedicated himself and did everything we asked. I know we brought in Geno during the offseason to compete all that and he did some really good things, especially in his start a couple days ago against the Giants, but Mark's our guy... I know that some people think that Mark had a bad season last year or whatever, but listen that is on more than one guy, I mean its not all on Mark. If Santonio doesn't go down...we had a lot of injuries and all that and like I said before, you know, I didn't really imprint on this team what I wanted this offense to be... I know people say "ground and pound" but really that was meant for the specific personnel we had and I guess we got too wrapped up in that and I should have done a better job of letting everyone know that what I wanted was an "all weather" offense...attacking like on defense, so maybe we let Mark down a little there. But I know this: Mark got us to 2 AFC Championship games, and I really believe that he is the guy to get us there again...thats why we brought in Marty...Mark and him are like this, and Mark has been working really hard and doing everything we ask....I just believe that Mark gives us the best chance to win next week against Tampa....I know you guys don't really like that answer much but I truly believe it and it is my call. So with that I will open it up to questions: Leberfield: Dan Leberfield, Jets confidential Rex, in the three pre-season games Sanchez didn't throw any touchdowns, had 3 picks and only scored 6 points on offense. How can you say that he gives you the best chance to win? Rex: Look: it's a new system and they are all learning but Marty is doing exciting things with this offense, you know the west coast stuff and all that...so I mean its not all going to come together right away but I am very confident in Mark, I just feel that way Cimini: Rex, numerous "sources" have said that many players are really frustrated with Mark continuing to start and feel like Geno clearly out played him and deserved the shot. Why isn't he getting the shot? Rex: Mark's done it before, I just believe in him, he gives us the best chance to w..... The rest of the press conference was lost as apparently the TV cannot handle the impact of a large red brick very well. I wish this were more tongue in cheek, bit honestly tell me that you don't expect to hear almost these exact words from Rex in 3 months?
If Geno clearly outplays him, he'll start. If it's close, it could go either way. But I think the Jets want either QB to step up and win the job. As long as it's one of them playing well and not both of them sucking equally. I think last year was a wakeup call to Rex. I mean, there's a new boss in town, too. He's going to protect himself. He does have his guys, but he's not going to play someone over a young player clearly more talented. Granted, until now, most of the young talent the Jets had were undrafted or late picks stuck on the depth chart behind highly paid veterans. I did buy it til that point though.
Rex: "Ohhhkay, first ahff, I just uh wanna say that uh, ya know, we've been seeing some great things from all the guys. All these young men are great talents. I mean uh, ya know, you watch these guys out in practice and you're just like, WOW!..Boy...But, uh, with all of uh...that said, I just feel that Mark gives us the best chance to win. Here you've got a kid who's seen the ups and the downs of the league, ya know. I mean, this kid has seen it all in his time as a New York Jet. I have great confidence, uh, in him and uh, ya know, all the guys. But, I just feel that I've gotta do what I believe...is best for this football team. So, with all that said, I'm gonna go ahead and open it up for questions."
I think you... obviously... you gawda give them credit. I think there's no doubt. - There's absolutely no doubt that's how I feel. Obviously, we played one helluva team today. Without question. WCO and all that. Mark's our guy. I know it. He really gives us the best chance to win.
The presser I dread is the one announcing RR is canned after this season. I think he's the man for the job.
I don't think either of these is all that likely to happen but the first would greatly increase the chances of the second.
The problem a lot of fans have right now is they think Geno will outplay Mark. That is not going to happen. If it does though, Geno will start. Rex will play the better QB, which is Sanchez.
In what universe is Sanchez the 'better quarterback'? The one where interceptions are good punts or the one in which Bill Belichick will throw up at the sight of a MM offense?
I'd hate that. That would make me so pissed. Besides not being the most articulate man in front of the press, I have nothing but respect for Rex Ryan. I like his overall coaching style, and feel getting back to his roots (namely being blitz happy) is gonna make this team better all round. I dis-agree, theres a chance that might happen. Geno can do it, he's capable he just needs to find a few more places he excels in than Sanchez. If he controls the ball better, and if he can work under pressure without making too many scared mistakes he may well be the man behind center. That said, theres a chance Sanchez starts as well, I just don't think its impossible for ES3 to surpass him.
I laugh at how the Sanchez fanboys beat their chest in their remarks of how Sanchez, a 5th year vet, will beat out a rookie Geno. Sanchez fans, ladies and gentlemen.
Funny, witty responses but the scary part is it's true. Why is it that everything the Jets do is so predictable on and off the field. From the play calling to the personnel decisions it's like we all know that they're going to fuck up in both regards and yet they do exactly that. Rex will be in trouble if he starts Sanchez.
well this isn't a press conference preview but a post preview right here on this board jets are 1-5 and sanchez is 10 td 17 int 52% comp and rex finally benches him for geno smith...that very day, in fact the very minute the decision is made- hobbes posts: " this is ridiculous! how can they bench sanchez as if it's his fault?! we all know all the receivers suck, the rb suck, the o-line sucks and worst of all is this morninweig guy! another bad OC hamstringing mark just like schotty and sporano! why do we keep getting mark these shitty OC's and surround him with awful talent? no qb could win here, not brady or brees or peyton -if sanchez had a real OC and even decent talent he would have won two superbowls by now! we all know he got to 30 wins faster than steve young..."
