We will win more than 6 for sure. How many more depends on the QB play. Defense will still be Top 10 at least and if offense ends up being top 15 I am pretty sure we will win 8 or 9
I'd rather make playoffs and have a shot at the super bowl than get a higher draft pick any day. I will never understand fans rooting for missing the playoffs for a higher pick.
I'm a big fan if the draft, but I completely agree with you. You never cheer for your team to lose, miss out, ect. Playoff experience is invaluable even if we were not to go all the way. Still, with the strength of schedule we are facing, I think we are in the 6 to 8 win bracket unless the offense vastly over performs expectations.
The offense is clearly the limiting factor on this team. If the offense is average, this could be a playoff team. Of course, that would mean the offense would need to play better than the sum of its parts, because on paper, the Jets are below average at QB, RB, WR and TE. But a better coordinator, some confidence, and some new playmakers that will now get an opportunity to show what they can do could make a big difference. I really think the key will be the running game. If Ivory and Goodson are healthy, it could be a nice 1-2. If they get hurt or don't live up to expectations, then the offense will have trouble. There's some potential for WR and TE to be decent enough, but combine that with the uncertainty at QB, and I think it's pretty safe to say how the running game goes, the Jets' offense will go. And by extension, the Jets' season will go.
It all depends on who plays QB. If Rex is stupid enough to play Sanchez ("Marl gives us the best chance to win!") even one down, he'll get what he deserves. In the past Rex has been fiercely loyal to his favorites even when they stink (see Bart Scott and Eric Smith), and I think if he has his way he'll play Sanchez. If he does, I expect no better than 6-10 with Rex and butt fumble elsewhere in 2014. If he play Smith at QB I think we'll be 8-8 and we will have at least given Geno the experience he needs to get. I expect the jets to contend in 2014 once they remove a few more ridiculous contracts that Tannebaum locked us into, and we can rid ourselves of a few more of his draft mistakes like Vlad Duc).
I think with us shoring up the defensive side of the ball I think our defense will keep games tight and we will have to get a couple of plays our way. Its the NFL so anything can happen in the course of one off season. I really believe that if Rex concentrates solely on the Defense and Leaves the Offense to Coach M then we will be good. One thing that people forget is when Rex let Schotty run that side and he ran his side we were much better off. Last years hiring of Sparano made no sense whats so ever and was a complete waste of a year for ever offensive player on the team.
We are in the same frame of mind entering the year. This is it. My hope is based on the belief that Rex will always bring a good D. With the addition of Richardson I'm pumped to watch the front Seven for the first time in years. The offense needs to over preform. The good news is that we should hopefully have a heathy wide receiver core. We have huge question marks at tight end and running back, but they come with big upside as well. If MM can turn the QB play around and some of the big upside guys plan out this season will be a pleasant surprise.
We weren't mediocre in 2009 and 2010. We were a QB away from a Super Bowl team both years. We were old in 2009 and 2010. That's why we declined shortly thereafter. And picking 29 and 30 in 2010 and 2011 didn't hurt us at all. Mo Wilkerson is worth more than what most teams got out of the 1st round in the two years combined and Kyle Wilson is worth more than what half of them got in either year. I'd be really happy to see the Jets luck into a late run this year and get to the AFCCG again. It'd be more than worth it to see the games play out and watch the younger players play in meaningful games in their early seasons. Picking 29 or 30 next year would look great in those circumstances because this team is young not old and the success would be sustainable.
Totally agree with you. This is a case where we need to have the running game set us up for the pass more than the pass setting us up for the run. Slightly different than MM MO but is the key to our offensive strategy. Interesting to see how MacNight does with the new OC.
The Jets are not the 32nd place team in the NFL, as some would lead you to believe. I don't know how good they can be though. Again, they are better than they were last year right now and they somehow won 6 games last year. Still, each year is different. The Jets could be much better this year than last, yet still only win 6 games.
This. The idea that it's better to have a top 5 pick than a deep playoff run is ludicrous. I watch football because it provides me a lot of entertainment. The longer the Jets are good or in the race, the more entertainment they provide. Being horrible all season just makes the football season miserable. It makes a few weeks leading up to the draft a little better, but I'd much rather the team be good enough so we don't go to the draft homeless.
If Hill, Kerley or Holmes get hurt we're fucked. I understand the logic behind developing young players but IMO they're going about it all wrong. We need a proven vet in camp as an insurance policy in the event of injury or in the case of Hill not stepping up. This organization doesn't seem like they learned from last year.
The two years are completely different. Last year the Jets thought they were a marginal contender with some upside. They thought they had hit a few bumps in the road on an otherwise successful journey. This year the Jets are rebuilding. They're tearing everything down, leaving a few foundation pieces in place, and building what's next. If the WR's are a disaster this year then likely Holmes and Hill won't be here next year. Kerley will wind up as a starter on a developing team and the Jets will draft or acquire other WR's to complement the QB they expect to play moving forward. Is signing a vet to supplement the existing depth chart a real possibility? Of course it is, in late July or early August when the player being signed comes very cheaply and without a contract that guarantees them anything other than a chance to compete for a job and extend their NFL career.
I understand that we're rebuilding and honestly between the no names the only one that I would feel comfortable getting game action is Gates. At least he has some experience and shown some potential to be an NFL caliber receiver. My thing is that they should first PROVE they are worthy of even being given the time of day. The Jets picked up a bunch of players off the scrap heap and are being sold to us as viable options. If the Jets had took the same approach with the receivers as they did with the RB's then I wouldn't have any issues. They need a vet that can help mentor the young QB's and receivers. Someone with NFL experience that can step in and play in case of emergency and even if we're rebuilding having vets can be valuable.
Rebuilding? Get a grip. This isnt Baseball, its football. This team....won 6 games...with no offensive coordinator, and no Skill talent due to Injury. They lost a safety.Landry. Bell is replaceable. So theres your hole. Last year Bart Scott. Got caught from behind, by Matthew fucking Mulligan. The defense is going to be Faster, and a little nastier this year, especially with Rex playcalling while he breaks in DT. Offensive side of the ball, the real question mark, and its a big one...os replacing two guards. Rex routinely delivers. Top 10 defense or better. Mornhinweg has been delivering top 10 offenses, not always with prime talent. And...this will be the first year, 3 wideouts return. Hill, holmes,Kerley(woh gained much by filling in Last year) cumberland/keller...meh. If Hayden Smith becomes the player they claim... Rebuilding. Hardly.
There are a lot of factors when talking about 2013 for the NY Jets: #1-- The schedule is much more difficult this time around. In October and November (@ Atlanta, Pittsburgh, New England, @Cincinnati, New Orleans, @Buffalo, @Baltimore), let's be honest, one could EASILY make an argument that the NY Jets could be 1-7 or 0-8 in this stretch. Our defense could be playing solidly, and give up over 21-24 PPG in this stretch real easy! And unlike a lot of you, I don't think the other 8 games are as easy as some of you give them credit for. Outside of maybe Buffalo at home, Oakland, and MAYBE Cleveland, I don't see the Jets being favored in any other games. Miami is much improved and will have come together alot better by the time we play them in December, Tampa Bay will be no bargain, and road games with Tennessee and Carolina will not be cake walks. The Jets went 6-10 last year with a schedule after the bye that quite frankly was very EASY! #2-- The offense, whether we want to admit or not, is still very much devoid of big time playmakers. Yes, Ivory and Goodson could help the rushing attack, or they could just as easily show why they never were starting material in New Orleans, Oakland, and Carolina. Holmes and Hill are coming off injuries at WR. #3-- There are still major holes on this team. Who is the quarterback? Who are the two guards? Has the depth on the offensive line really gotten that great in case someone like Mangold or Ferguson goes down? Will Cromartie be able to play to the level of Revis? Who will man the other safety? How about tight end? The Jets are putting a bunch of faith in a lot of unknowns. If they work out, the Jets are in contention. If not, uh oh! As The Dark Knight said, the Jets could end up better talent wise and still only win 6 games. First and foremost, they better find a QB. Without one, the offense will remain stagnant!
To put it another way that removes the semantics entirely: the 2013 Jets will have at least 5 new starters on offense, assuming QB and RT remain the same, and 7 new starters on defense, assuming that Pace wins the competition at LOLB. Now most people would call that a rebuild.
Maybe you took my comment out of context but I want to make the playoffs as well however only if we see improvements from our youth We went on playoff runs with vets and when they washed up we had no youth to step in because our drafting was poor Due to picking late and also managing the draft
