WR, TE, QB, there are a lot of problems on the offense at this point. I have the feeling that positively resolving the third of those will go a long way towards fixing the other two.

On the bright side there are likely to be no holes on the offensive line for the first time in two years. The competition there is likely to create a strong unit and that will help everything else run smoother.

2013 is a rebuilding year. If the Jets come out of it solid in the trenches on both sides and with a clear perspective on the QB we're where we need to bo going into 2014.

Let the unknown be known! This year is to see what we have for the future and what fat we should cut. Lets try not to be to dismal; Lets let it play out and hope for progress in our WRs/TE's

Santonio Holmes is coming back, no? That's a HUGE difference right there. Nobody was bitching about the WRs until after he went down. Plus Keller missed a huge chunk of games, and Kerley and Hill were hurt on and off. I still say we sign Edwards as a 'just in case' guy, but I don't think the WR core is as bad as folks say. Hill's knee should get better, and improvement will come with time. We know that Kerley is pretty reliable in the slot as well as Holmes, plus both have the speed to take off down field if needed. I wouldn't mind seeing Cro line up wide a little more often as well. Ivory is probably a better receiver than Greene was.

let's call a spade a spade, it is easily a bottom 5 WR depth chart in the NFL

Good article, though I completely disagree that Richardson was a reach.

  10. If you really look at things the Jets WR corps is actually young & promising at the top 3. The problem is lack of depth behind that combined w/ the fact that Holmes,Kerley & Hill all get hurt. But this is not the headlining world is ending problem the media makes it out to be.

More concerning is the Tight end situation.Cumberland can be a hold the fort type but he's another one who can't stay healthy. Not a good unit there.

If you look at things honestly you understand that Holmes is a problem child, Hill has as good a chance to be a bust as he does an average WR and both of those much higher than the chances he'll be a star and Kerley is in the unenviable position of being in direct competition with Holmes for snaps once he leaves the slot.

The Jets main WR's have as many questions as answers right now and the results could just as easily be poor as anything else when those questions are answered.

The depth problem exacerbates the main talent problem listed above since there aren't any players on the depth chart right now that can really push any of the above players. Somebody surprising may wind up playing a lot next year but that will likely be because one of the main guys failed in some way not because the depth guy forced the issue.

And yes, the TE position is also a problem.

We should expect the Jets to use the draft next year to go get some playmakers and probably LB's as well.

As always, great post. 100% agreed with you, although I worry a bit more about the OL than you. Not sure it will be as stout as we'd like, but we'll see.

You can call me a total homer on this one if you like, but I do not honestly think that more than 10 teams have 1 receiver better than Santonio Holmes.

I know that one guy doesn't speak for the whole core, but I'm confident that he brings us at least out of the bottom 5. Kerley kind of got thrown to the fire last year attempting to fill his role. He didn't do all that bad, all things considered. Hill is a wildcard. He's gotta fix his dropsies, but he's got big potential as we've seen. Holmes working with him (even if just as a mentor) in TC could help him tremendously.

I think those 3 guys together will be solid. Honestly what we are missing is a Cotchery type player. A reliable guy that can work the sidelines and make those critical 3rd down catches. I still think we should bring back Edwards, though. I'd take either in a heartbeat, although you never know with all the young uns.

    Yeah, you are a homer.

    Megatron
    Andre Johnson
    Larry Fitzgerald
    Brandon Marshall
    A.J. Green
    Dwayne Bowe
    Roddy White/Julio Jones
    Greg Jennings/Percy Harvin
    Hakeem Nicks/Victor Cruz
    Dez Bryant/Miles Austin
    Demaryius Thomas/ Wes Welker
    Vincent Jackson
    Mike Wallace
    Reggie Wayne
    Stevie Johnson
    Sidney Rice
    Steve Smith
    Torrey Smith
    Antonio Brown
    Desean Jackson

Go ahead, list eleven of those lines that DO NOT contain a receiver better than Holmes.

Plus you have teams like GB and SF who don't have any stand out receivers, but have a solid group all around and are easily better than the Jets in that category.

The Jets are without questions in the bottom 10, if not the bottom 5.

We'll see. I see maybe 7 guys that might be NFL quality O-line starters going into camp. That's Mangold, D'Brick, Colon, Peterman, Winters, Howard and Oboushi. That's like 2 guys more than the Jets looked to have going into 2011 and 2012.

The Jets are still very vulnerable to a Mangold or D'Brick injury but the questions around the guards and at right tackle are fewer than we've seen recently.

Last year at this time RT was going to be Wayne Hunter or Vlad Ducasse. Just the difference between them and Howard, Colon, Oboushi is huge.

I don't know about most people here but I'm not comfortable going into the season with Holmes, Kerley and Hill as our primary receivers. Hill is still unproven we can't go into the season assuming Hill is ready to step in and play a big role. I thought they learned their lesson from last year?

They should sign a vet whether it's Lloyd or even Braylon and let Hill and the others PROVE they are ready to play a big role.

Our WHOLE Offense is predicated on Hill becoming a threat.

Holmes is an elite complimentary WR... and it's a domino effect

That's petty much what Kerley is, what we're missing is exactly what Hill is supposed to be, a deep threat, play making WR.

Call me a homer too. But a good or great QB could make Tone, Hill and Kerley impressive if not spectacular. While a mediocre QB can make Any top WR on that list look pedestrian.

That's how you remember it, huh? Sounds blissful.

edit: I just went back and found 50 threads moaning about our WR situation from this time last year through the time Holmes got injured. Half of them are about Holmes himself. Here's one of the later ones, from after the Steelers loss:
