Agreed Mack. A good HC (in the same sense a manager) will put the right people in position to implement his vision on offense. Obv, it did not work out with Sparano, but MM has the pedigree to run a successful offense without the HC breathing down his neck.

I actually applaud this move by Rex.

The difference is that nobody has said that Rex should get an extension or that the record doesn't matter. Based on your examples the homers are at least consistent about Rex's success. They aren't changing points to maintain the same perspective. Rex has still won more games than he has lost with the Jets. 38-32 inc playoffs. That's pretty amazing for having a bottom 10 passing game with Sanchez every year. Plus people just pretend we didn't have several major injuries last year, and only quote the recent record from 2012 to justify their hatred. People don't give Rex enough credit, they just blindly bash the guy because of his personality. I'm not saying his record makes him the best coach ever or anything like that, but he's a good coach and has already proved himself IMO. He just says things that go against the gain and people can't handle that.

    3rd and 3

Let's see, it's 3rd and 3 on the fifty. As the OC you don't make the decision if the team is going for it on fourth down. You pass to get the three yds. then punt if you don't make it. The head coach, not thinking about his next defensive formation, tells the OC to plan on going on fourth down. Now the OC has many more options at his disposal on third down because he knows he has fourth if he doesn't make it.
Rex, on the other hand, is concerned about his defensive statistics. He doesn't consult with the OC until fourth down. That's a problem when a head coach is too involved with one side of the ball.
If you acknowledge that Idzik is a smart guy, there is no way he will allow this to continue beyond this year. Rex is telling him he doesn't want the job as head coach. He would rather just coach the defense. Unless Idzik wants to reinvent the wheel and run the team from his office he cannot let it continue like this. He will be fired before Rex.

Rex is and always will be concerned about winning (like any normal head coach). Rex has gone for it on fourth down plenty of times.

As many people have said on this thread, not many coaches are masters on both sides of the ball (as well as special teams). Coughlin is a special teams guru. Rex is all defense. Payton and Belichick are all about offense. It doesn't impact their ability to run the team.

Really? That's the only reason? Not because IT MAKES SENSE TO RUN THE BALL WHEN UP 2 POSSESSIONS? Yeah, he just wants to increase the d rankings, not win the game.

Got anything to back that up? Didn't think so. Slandering people is bad, mmmkay?

Plus you don't always determine whether to go on fourth, on 3rd down, unless it's the end of the game and you have no choice. Obviously a big part of going for it, depends on how successful the 3rd down play is. 4th and 1 is miles different than 4th and 3. Sounds like you've never been involved in coaching football on any level to make some false blanket statement like that and use it against Rex. Rex haters continue to prove themselves as completely lacking in any football knowledge time and time again. No credibility to those BS claims. You might as well get back to talking about feet or his weight. It's just as good an argument.

    Head coach

Barc, this has nothing to do with hating on Rex. He really seems like a nice guy. But really, if the GM had to base his future on a coach, would he choose someone who was only comfortable with one side of the ball. If you were the GM wouldn't you want a manager and motivator?

NO. Nobody gives a crap about a manager and a motivator. Ryan is a great young coach who went to 2 back to back AFC CGs in his first 2 seasons as an NFL HC. Rex is widely considered to be a BRILLIANT football coach. That is why there isn't even a question from Idzik about even thinking of replacing him. Ryan will be the HC of the NYJ in 2013, 2014 and for years to come. If you think otherwise you aren't paying attention. Cheers!

Everything about your post is wrong, three laughable parts are in BOLD.

Everyone wants a coach who can motivate and get the most out of thier players. Coples!

Rex is a good coach only if talking about the defense or being a DC. If he was brilliant his defense would get a lot more sacks and turn-overs.

If Idzik had his say he would have hired a new coach already, He doesn't want his GM status tied to a drowning HC who runs his mouth and has turned into a joke.

Rex is a very good D coordinator who took over a stacked team and took them to back to back AFC Finals. He was also the HC who watched the talent on the team deteriorate along with the GM. He was also the HC with no clue on what he wants his O to look like other than ground and pound.

The HC can be a guy who is stepped in O or D but ultimately he has to have a vision of a complete team and a coaching philosophy that develops players and puts them in a position to succeed. Rex is a one sided scheme guy. Can he develop into more than that? I'm not sure and by the looks of it he will be on a very tight leash.

Obviously the owner loves him or at least loves the idea of not paying him while someone else manages the team, hard to know. Idzik is going to make substantial changes. The OC has a lot to prove coming out of the shadow of a HC who kept him on a very tight leash after he failed as the boss in Detroit.

Things are going to get interesting this year. I have a feeling Couples is going to be the guy to make or break Rex Ryan this year. If Rex can't get this low motor guy to play to his potential it may very well be the difference between a very good D and a mediocre D that leads to his direct firing.

Well put Sir. My sentiments exactly! There are 3 units to the team that need attending to, not just one. Hasn't it appeared strange that there hasn't been any discussion at all about ST's? Field position still counts and judging by last year's efforts, ST's might be the weakest link on the roster but not a peep from the HC/DC.

Moving on from there, your HC does need to know more about the overall functions of the franchise. Up until now, Rex has had Schotty run the offense, and Westhoff run ST's. He didn't really have to learn anything new but instead, be the defacto DC. Both guys are gone now. Rex's lack of vision brought us Tony Sparano as OC which, simply put, cost us a season as Sparano's system didn't work even with Tebow here in NYC. Nevermind that it had stopped working in Miami but if memory serves, Rex was in love with the "ground and pound" offense and loved Sparano. That should have set off alarm bells throughout the organization all the way to Woody's mansion in a age where the league is more in tune with Air Coryell than it is with 3 runs and a cloud of dust.

Now? He gets MM who flamed out in Philly as a OC and was a bust in Detroit as a HC. Granted, MM is a far better qualified OC than both Sparano and Schotty but, his system will need time to implement and the reality is, Rex doesn't have a lot of time to get it together.

Idzik took the job and was ordered to keep Rex on for one season more or less as a trial balloon to see if the two can function together and obtain positive results. Woody probably didn't want to change too much, too fast and with all the negative press this franchise has gotten, fairly or not, had to be dealt with. My GUESS is that Idzik agreed to the one year reprieve for Rex but my gut tells me he wants a HC with more of an encompassing vision of the team on whole instead of one facet.

To Ryan's credit, he's stacking the deck in his favor by going all in on the d side. That's his strength and he knows it. Unfortunately, if the requirements of the HC job means a solid grip on all aspects instead of one, this approach, while appearing to be logical, might work against him. It all depends on what Idzik is looking for in a HC.

The good thing in all of this is it appears that we have a GM that has a real vision of what he wants this franchise to look like from the field level up to the management level and no one gets to mess with it. For all the Homers that think Ryan is golden on a extension based on 2009 and 2010, think again because 2011 and 2012 didn't do Ryan any favors from the management dept. He publically admitted losing the pulse of the team and if it were any other owner but Woody Johnson, Rex would have walked the plank when Tannenbaum did.

2013 will be worth watching for quite a few reasons. The least of which is what happens with Sanchez.

You make a good point, Cman. I disagree with you about his system flaming out. Philly did relatively well offensively last year. They moved the ball and whatnot, but with Vick 6's and that dreadful offensive line and defense, they couldn't do too much. We won't have to worry about our offense struggling to score 10 points in a game.

If Rex sticks with what he knows and we have an average offense, we can do extremely well next year, which will surprise even me.

I do think that Rex will survive until 2014. However, I don't think he will get an extension. We will have cap space and draft picks next year. That will be his do or die year. If he can't get the team to the playoffs by then, he will be gone.

As for this year, if we have less than 6 wins he's gone. 7 becomes iffy. 8 or more and he stays.

I agree AJ. The wildcard is the schedule. Up until Dec. 1st, this team is gonna get its ass handed to it and Rex's main job is to keep this team from really stinking up the joint. The second half of the schedule is where the Jets will make or break Ryan. Nobody expects much against the upper echelon of the league but they'd better not stink out the joint against the bottom feeders that are the second half of the schedule.

Rex can ill afford another Buttfumble, tattoo, embarrassing loss on national TV, or any controversy whatsoever. Rex needs to be in control of the entire team instead of the defense and don't think for a minute that Idzik isn't watching this. Wouldn't surprise me if Woody isn't giving Rex the fisheye either. This team shows any sign of unraveling or mailing it in on national tv?, Rex might as well get his resume freshened up and get ready to take that next DC job which I'm sure is coming.

Rex is a great DC. No one is disputing that. Rex is NOT a great HC. Perhaps he should realize that, just as Tebow needs to understand that he's NOT a NFL calibre Qb, and play to his strengths. He could have a career far longer than his dad did cause if you remember, once Buddy Ryan decided to be a HC instead of a DC, that was the beginning of the end.

  15. Those who want Rex gone are certainly entitled to that opinion. But this idea of using the notion that he only specializes in defense just doesn't make any sense. What existing or perspective head coach DOESN'T have a specific facet that they specialize in? Furthermore who has experience as an offensive, defensive & ST coordinator?I don't think that candidate exists. It's not as if Rex can't speak intelligently about all 3 facets or that he's incapable of making all big picture decisions. This just seems like an excuse to pile on for the sake of the "fire rex" agenda.

As for the built in excuses based on 2009 & 2010, what it shows is that when the talent level of the team is reasonable, Rex wins. Now the talent level has suffered over the last 2 years..no doubt. Rex certainly played his part in that. But so did the final 8 rule, salary cap restraints, excessive injuries & bad contracts drawn up by Tannenbaum.

With the constant reorganizations, reshuffling & turnover this franchise has endured, doesn't it make some sense to give a guy w/ somewhat of a proven track record a chance to correct mistakes & to continue growing? Sure Rex could've been fired after last season. But what would that accomplish? Continued disorganization? Deeper rebuilding? Yet another vision to undertake? Accountability is important but so is stability. Stability has been an extremely elusive trait for the Jets.

Termination at the first sign of decline didn't work w/ Herm Edwards or Mangini. And Rex is a better coach than both those guys. All coaches make mistakes. In the salary cap era, unless you have a franchise game changing QB..you're going to have depleted down years. Are we just gonna fire every single head coach at the first sign of adversity? We've tried that approach since the fall of Joe Walton & it has gotten us nowhere.

Everything about your post is wrong. This is the NFL, its not high school ball, if a player needs a HC to motivate him, then he isn't a professional. The fact that you are totally clueless that Ryan is widely considered a brilliant young coach is hilarious. Lastly it is not up to Idzik to hire a new coach and Idzik was not brought in to hire coaches - the HC is Woody's decision.

The fact that you are too obtuse to understand that Ryan is the HC now and in the future is laughable. Pay attention. Ryan is the best NYJ HC since Tuna and he will be getting a contract extension regardless of your opinion.

I think the special teams issues we saw last year were a direct result of the lack of talent on the roster. When westhoff can't get the job done you know he's really got dick to work with. Hopefully idzik is doing a good job of restocking the shelves.

All they need is 4 wins before they bye. They get 4 wins with the murderous schedule, they can get 8 in the end.

4 is the magic number. Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Tennessee, and probably Pittsburgh. That's all we need.

I also agree that we really cannot afford to be embarrassed anymore. We only have two national tv chances (thank goodness).

    Rex

I think most of the fans like Rex. Unfortunately, it's Idzik's call not ours. The traditional NFL head coach may come from one side of the ball but when he becomes the head man he must run the whole show and step back from his former job. No GM can risk hiring a head coach who immerses himself so completely in one part of the job and leaves the rest to other coaches. The modern NFL head coach's job is to coach the coaches, motivate the players and deal with the media. Rex seems be telling Idzik he cannot fill that role.
