Yep. Great defenses start up front and the Jets are getting there.

Jets are investing highly on OL and DL. It took Seattle about three years before their investment started paying off. Let the trend continue. Good thing is, There already is a good foundation on both sides of the ball. Maybe it will be shorter here in NY.

I must say as time passes I like what we did on draft day more and more. Milliner and Richardson fit really well into what we're trying to do (schematically at least), Geno Smith was a value pick #39 and OL depth was a good thing to look for in the later rounds.

That said, I think the big question looking back at this draft will be "how dominant a pass rusher will Jarvis Jones become"? Especially a comparison between Coples' numbers and Jones' will be made time and time again.

PS Also liked the Ivory & T-Bo strategy. bruising back and an all-purpose FB.

One thing we definitely did going with Richardson and Coples instead of Jones and Jones is that we got significantly bigger. Even still, athleticism is not lost on our two kids. Its a very strong and athletic front... hopefully they all pan out, because together they could be nasty... especially if Kenrick Ellis also becomes something.

    So you're changing our draft "D" grade to a "B" ?

Not that you gave us a D, but even without loyalty to our team, what a crock it was that we were graded a D by a few so-called experts.

    F them all.

I'm most anxious to see Sheldon Richardson because when that pick was announced I wasn't familiar with him, but really like what I've heard afterwards and how excited our coaches were to get him. Milliner I'm not as excited about because he'll always be linked to Revis in some way even if it's not fair.

I do still doubt that moving to the outside and losing weight is the best move for Coples. Last year he seemed to get penetration on the inside all the time, but could barely create any pressure at all from the outside. I'm might be wrong though since I have suppressed most memories from last season.

The thing that still gives me hope for Rex to become our successful head coach for years is how much he has been able to do with our defenses filled with flawed and/or one dimensional personnel since 2009. He was able to come up with schemes to somehow not get blown off the field starting guys like Eric Smith and more recently Bart Scott/Thomas/Pace with people like Mike Devito and Jim Leonhard being relied on for major roles being borderline liabilities themselves. Great offenses would pick apart that personnel from time to time, but somehow Rex was able to take a few key pieces and put together schemes to hold their own better than most teams. Last year Rex was even able to get similar production without Revis entirely.

Once Coples develops and can create similar consistent pressure from the 5 tech and rush OLB that he already can as an interior rusher this defense will be fiercer than '09. Rex is definitely a defensive genius and it is really exciting to think about him switching between insane packages moving around fronts pre snap and sending people to go kill the quarterback play after play. The offensive woes won't stop until we can develop a franchise QB but all of the pieces are already in place to be a scary top 5 D again and 1 draft away from being a perennial top 2-3 D. Giving Rex this type of DL with his beloved corners plus the LB restocking process is going to keep OC's up nights every week that Rex stays head coach of the Jets. Can say whatever you want about Rex in other areas but you can't take that away from the guy.

Before we go commenting on how a bunch of young players who've never done anything (with Wilkerson as an exception) are going to be the next coming, best line in the history of the nfl, or any other ridiculous comment, can we wait to see if they are actually good players or not?

For example, Rexy is already calling out one of your boys for not doing shit in the offseason. That didn't take long.

Right now all we're really worried about is what happens if Geno Smith goes to the Bills.

You're right. We should wait until the Jets sign an overrated rusher to a 100 million dollar contract before we start claiming they have a great line.

I know that being a troll is a very important part of your life but I'll actually take the time to give you stat lines just like I would a regular human. Call it a gift:

Quinton Coples- Tackles 30 Sacks 5.5

Dontari Poe- Tackles 38 Sacks 0.0
Fletcher Cox- Tackles 39 Sacks 5.5
    Michael Brockers- 31/4.0
    Bruce Irvin- 17/8.0

    Melvin Ingram- 29/1.0
    Shea McClellin- 14/1.5
    Chandler Jones- 45/6.0
    Dont'a Hightower- 60/4.0
    Whitney Mercilus- 18/6.0
    Nick Perry- 18/2.0

Those are all of the Dlinemen and LB picks from Coples' 1st round. Seeing less action than most on the list Coples put up as many sacks as anyone at a better % rate and only Hightower tackled at a significantly higher %. There are a few probable busts on that list, Coples doesn't happen to be one of them. The real question is whether he develops into the best front 7 player selected in the 2012 NFL draft or 2nd/3rd/4th. The only thing that can keep him from becoming a prolific passrusher is his attitude/work ethic so of course Rex Ryan is going to do whatever he can to push him. Don't be sad just because Coples will probably outproduce your teams' latest fiasco of a $100M acquisition in year 2.

Lol, I could of sworn that Rex said that he was disappointed with Coples' last workout as in the day before. He said that every time that he gets the chance, he's going to criticize him. Watch the ducking interview before you talk please.

Nice post, man. I knew he came on very strong at the end of the year (I believe he had 2 sacks called back due to roughing the passer and hitting the helmet of the QB), but did not realize he was the one of the best, if not the best, DL/LB drafted in that 1st round.

So now I'm a troll because I don't think the Jets are very good and/or have a negative opinion in a thread? Remove my handle name and my opinions are just like most on this board, but as long as we're into the name calling...

The problem with Coples was not whether he had the talent to put up numbers or have a good year. The problem was, like you said, his attitude, consistency, and work ethic. Is he going to do it game in and game out, year after year? That won't be known for a while. I'm certainly not going to chalk him up as "made it" after one year where he didn't play much and is already having problems putting in the time during the offseason to get better.

Actually, I'm not. I've seen this statement made by 2 different Jets posters, and that's without being on this board much and barely reading any threads.

All we've seen on the field from Coples is impressive. Late last season, he showed flashes of being a very, very good player. Rex said LAST SEASON that he would get on Coples every chance he got to get him to work as hard as he wants, and he did it again here. He thinks the best way to motivate Coples is calling him out through the media.

In a perfect world, Rex wouldn't need to do this, but this means absolutely nothing in May. I remember people worried Kerley would have a bad season after Rex called him out last season. Just trying to keep his foot on his ass.

People get on Rex because he is too much of a players' coach, and he is. But he will motivate certain players through the media that he feels need it and more importantly can handle it. Coples is one of them.

Coples isn't there yet, but Wilkerson is (and is only getting better), and there's little reason to think Coples won't be a very good player. Richardson is unproven, but Rex loves him, and if Rex uses him correctly, he should be a wrecking ball.

No, the problem with Coples is that there really isn't one. Wilkerson, Coples, Richardson, Milliner, and Wilson/Ellis to a lesser extent. These are the defensive picks that Rex has sought out to come in and create a defense he could hang his hat on. It's obvious after 2 years that Wilkerson is a home run, Ellis is probably fair value and only Kyle Wilson may have somewhat overdrafted the year before. Wilkerson said it himself last year several times, he isn't the player that Coples is. Wasn't drafted as high. Didn't create as much production his rookie year from more opportunity with 35 tackles and 3 sacks. Didn't show the same type of flashes of becoming a completely dominant pass rusher.

Barring injury of course there is no way that Coples doesn't become at least a very good dlineman in a Rex Ryan defense. Rex isn't pushing him to become very good, he's pushing him to become one of the best pass rushers in the game.

If you turn out to be right and his attitude/work ethic causes Rex to fail at his goal, you'll get the reward of watching him become only a better player than Wilkerson which should be a great comfort for the Bills OLine twice a year especially with Richardson ending up in the backfield before you blink from the 1 and 3 tech. Rex would rather kill himself than pick 1st round DL busts in case you haven't figured it out.

Go criticize the offense or pray that Milliner gets injured some more or something. Why would you go right to the team's wheelhouse with your puny little darts? This defense has been raping your precious Bills offense for years and it's only going to get worse. Try concocting a more plausible scenario for your team to turn the tables.

Richardson just jumps off of the tape as a can't miss player in a high powered defense. Rex is going to use him correctly don't worry. This unit is his bread and butter and he wouldn't make a big mistake on it. If he did he definitely wouldn't deserve to keep the job, but I don't believe he would.
