Mike was just being an a** on purpose and it was so obvious. He certainly knows that Idzik wasn't going to answer the Sanchez question. No guarantees at this point, and no mature professional GM was going to be baited into answering.

Stuff in brackets is my notes.

Rex called out Tebow essentially for not practicing well.

[Note: Sparano is from the Parcells school. If you do not practice well you do not play much. Period.]

Stephen A. Smith called out Rex for not paying enough attention to the offense. Said he should have gone out the door with Tannenbaum.

[Note: This is basically a false case. Tannenbaum was fired because he mismanaged contracts, the cap and the draft. The mismanagement of contracts and the cap led to a deteriorating performance level for the team, e.g. Wayne Hunter at RT and a bunch of clowns playing WR and TE last year. Mismanagement of the draft left the Jets shallow and untalented last season.]

Stephen A. Smith managed to call out Rex for sticking with Sanchez last year despite having no viable backup QB.

    [Note: No comment.]

On Geno Smith: he's smart, he studies, he's been the starting QB since freshman year of high school in Miami. Inaccurate only in that Geno did not start as a freshman at WVU although he played some.

On whether he will be more involved in the offense: "No, I hired a good proven guy to be the offensive coordinator. I won't be interfering much on that side. I will be very active on defense but I got a really good guy to run the offense."

On the two defensive players at the top of the draft: "That wasn't me. I think we got two very impactful players there."

On being a lame duck: "It's Mr. Johnson's team. It's not about me. I'll show you the chip on my shoulder by the way we play next year."

On the rebuild: "We're building a foundation for sustainable success. With sustainable success comes world championships."

On Darrelle Revis: "Admits it is a fair conversation that he might have built up Revis rep to the point he asked for the big contract."

[Note: My take: Revis held out on Mangini. Rex may have fanned the flames a bit but the fire was already kindled.]

"Everybody wanted Revis to be with the Jets but the financial gap was too big to bridge."

"Once we realized we could not bridge the gap we got the best compensation we could for him and I was fully on board with that. I was behind that when I realized what the facts were."

On Dennis Thurman as DC: "Scheme will be similar but we will stay ahead of the curve."

On friction in the locker room and leaks: "I think we have a disciplined team, rank in top 5 in fewest penalties. Leaks are what they are and you don't know where they derive from. If you don't put your name to it is it really factual? We think those things are out of the building. Bad for the team and a negative overall effect. Why would you not build your team up when you talk to the media. If you look hard enough you may find somebody to say something. I don't appreciate it."

The really sad thing is that Mike and the Mad Dog really worked. They played off of each other in ways that softened Francesa and brought the Mad Dog back to earth when he was threatening to leave orbit.

Abbott and Costello was a great team. Bud Abbott alone was just an angry guy ranting at life. Same thing.

That's actually Fatcessa's way of trying to be tricky. He asks this question, hoping he gets an immediate obvious affirmative ("Geno? Of course, he'll be here on June 1st.") ... with the goal of immediately following it up with the question Idzik doesn't want to answer ("Will Sanchez be on the roster after June 1st?"), hoping Idzik will stutter and be evasive. Anything less than a "Mark? Of course, he'll be here on June 1st," and Fatty gets to browbeat him with the difference in enthusiasm and then harp on "I tricked Idzik into telling us he's cutting Sanchez" for the next 3 months.

Idzik screwed Columbo's routine by being hesitant in his answer regarding Geno (probably by accident because he was stunned by how stupid a question it was). But Fatcessa, ever the blowhard, didn't even realize that Idzik stonewalled the line of questioning with the Geno answer and still immediately followed with the Sanchez question anyway. He had his script of questions and it never occurred to him he might not get the answers his script called for.

The way to get something interesting out of a sports guy, or really anybody who is in a competitive environment in which information is privileged, is to ask parallel questions to the topic you're really interested in.

If you want to know who the Jets are likely to have in the QB competition this year in camp ask Idzik about who Seattle had in camp last year and what the process was there. You can draw parallels from that which are useful in figuring out what might happen this year.

If you want to know how the Jets are going to approach developing their roster ask how the Bucs did that in the late 90's with Tony Dungy a defensively oriented head coach in house. Again, you can draw parallels that will be useful.

When you get a chance to mine the information store of a lifelong football guy who has seen as much as Idzik has you shouldn't blow the opportunity with "aha, gotcha!" type questions. Those might entertain some of your customers more than actually learning something about how football works but in the long run they are like cotton candy in the mouth and melt away pretty quickly.

If you go the other way of getting him to indirectly reveal things that do not harm the competitive posture of the current Jets franchise much you build up a reservoir of knowledge that can be used well if the Jets rebuild works.

My liking for Idzik just went up....handled this interview with smarts, not getting mad or giving too much info while treating Mike with respect despite Francesa acting like a clown towards Idzik throughout.

It's going to take a while to make ESPN get off of our jocks. Same goes for Manish.

Oddly enough, Rich Cimini has actually written some non-shitty articles lately.

I still can't believe Fatcessa actually asked if Geno will be on the roster after June 1st. No shit, we just drafted him. What do you think?

If I was Idzik during that interview, I most likely would have burst out laughing.

I'm convinced it's almost entirely a "class" issue centered around Rex; the hate in the media will be there until Rex is gone. He could win a Super Bowl and they'd still attack him. It's the modern day football equivalent of Caddyshack; snobs vs. slobs. Too much "old money" in the NY/NJ media to be forced to treat a guy like Rex respectfully or pretend to like him.

If Rex wins a Super Bowl I dont care what the media writes, I think we play a Super Bowl soon to be honest as the AFC is pretty mediocre

    Rex has beat the Patriots

Bengals, Ravens and Broncos are beatable

Steelers are our Achilles heel for some reason, I think because we cant bring Big Ben down

But again Rex's style works in the playoffs, its all about getting there
