What is this crap? Yes OLB S and TE were needs, but they weren't our only needs, nor our biggest needs as you suggest in your post. The Jets had clear needs at OG since we lost our two starting guards last season. Also, we had needs on the DL as we lost starters Pouha and DeVito. Lastly, our biggest need was QB for reasons I don't need to list. Oh yeah, we also just traded Revis so we had a need for another starting CB. Now, these needs were addressed in the draft. It's impossible for us to have filled every need in this year's draft. Please don't cherry pick the needs that we didn't fill and pretend we had no others just to make your argument.
Not to pick on you bit why do people keep putting warmack at 13? He was off the board. Can I take austin at 13?
I would have picked Jones over Richardson without a single doubt in my mind. I was stunned when we didn't pick him. The guys gonna be a beast while Richardson is an unknown. I'm waiting to see how everything pans out before I jump to conclusions, but I have a baddddd feeling we're gonna regret not taking Jones.
if this were track and field that would matter. when was the last time a defender had to run 40 yards to get to the QB?
Jones is going to be a beast while Richardson is an unknown? they are both unknown, and Richardson actually had less caution flags than Jones. My only concern with Richardson is whether he can be a 3 down contributor in our system. for pick 13, has to contribute in all fronts, all downs. same would apply to Jones.
I would have certainly selected Warmack with the #9 pick. To me, this was a no-brainer, and I'm still scratching my head at the Milliner pick. I would have given Kyle Wilson another year to prove himself, and as this was a very, VERY deep draft for CBs, we could have taken one later. Milliner should prove out to be an excellent CB, but Warmack was a rare instance of need meeting value, and at #9, he was both. I actually love the Richardson pick. I know he is seen as more of a 4-3 guy than a 3-4, but he is young and can learn to play in a 3-4. He will help our pass rush, as he is pretty astute at bring pressure from the inside. I've heard several REAL experts, such as Bill Polian, say he was an excellent pick, and when Bill Polian says it, I tend to believe it. Much more than some of the guys around here who think it was an awful pick. Our DL has the potential to be freaking awesome thanks to this pick. I'm also not sure I would have taken Smith in the second. I know it was a good pick valuewise, but there was a couple WRs we could have snagged there. I was fine with giving Sanchez another year, and if he bombed out (as I'm fairly sure he will), there are some great blue chip QBs coming out next year. The rest of the draft I have no issue with, including trading Ivory for a 4th. I have no issue with any of the other picks, to be honest.G
Scratching your head on the Milliner pick? Watch some tape I dont think ive seen him have a bad play once , its revis like as far as the college game goes
Chance Warmack G Alabama 1st Round pick 9 Tyler Eifert TE ND 1st Round Pick 13 Geno Smith QB WVU pick in 2nd was great Stedman Bailey WR WVU in 3rd round Mychal Rivera TE Tennessee 5th Round
draft I would not presume to tell professionals how to do there job. I'm just a fan. I can be wrong without penalty.
1A - Xavier Rhodes - liked him better than Milliner b/c he's a bigger press man corner and better athlete IMO. Rex loves to play zero coverage behind his blitzes and I think Rhodes has the potential to "play on an island" better than Milliner. I thought Milliner was overrated and benefited from a great front 7 at 'Bama like Kareem Jackson a few years ago. Rhodes was compared to Brandon Browner by NFL.com, who I absolutely love. 1B - Alec Ogletree - Was hoping Jets could trade down and pick up another 2nd or 3rd and wanted to take this Ogletree badly. Jets sorely need speed and coverage ability at LB, especially with Gronk and Hernandez in the division, and Ogletree was the best in the draft from that perspective. Also adds the ability to bounce outside and rush the passer or blitz if needed. A Swiss army knife for Rex on defense. 2 - Tank Carradine - Jets absolutely need a pass rusher, and once Mingo and Jordan went early, I had my sights set on Carradine in Round 2. I loved his pass rush ability and his size for Rex's scheme. A 6'4 275 pound DE/OLB to wreak havoc off the edge, his game reminds me some of Terrell Suggs who I love. There are always questions about 4-3 DE's in college being able to drop in coverage as an OLB, but I think the Jets will play more 4 man fronts going forward and also want this guy rushing the passer much more than dropping in coverage. 3 - Was hoping Tyrann Mathieu would fall to the Jets but it didn't work out. Say what you want about him, the kid is a feisty playmaker who makes things happen on the football field and would be a great nickelback and kick returner on special teams. The other guy I would have loved to take here was TJ McDonald, who went one pick before the Jets to the Rams. Similar to Taylor Mays when Mays decided to go back to school for another season, McDonald's stock fell from potential 1st round pick to mid round pick as people poked more holes in his game. While I agree that he'll never be a rangy ball hawking safety like Earl Thomas or Jairus Byrd, I think he would have been a perfect replacement for Landry as a physical enforcer in the secondary. I also think playing in Monte Kiffin's scheme limited his ability to make plays, as he was often asked to play basic Tampa-2 coverage, rather than being brought up in the box to blitz and make plays like Landry did for the Jets. If pressed to make a selection with whow as actually on the board at the time, I'd probably have taken Keenan Allen (too good a value) or Matt Barkley (who I think can be a Chad Pennington type of QB). 4 - Liked the trade for Ivory. Hoped to trade a 5th, but a 4th is not bad. Love Ivory's battering ram style, and he's got much better vision than Shonn Greene had. Fans will love him. 5 - Andre Ellington - Been one of my favorite players for years in college. Explosive home run hitting RB who I think would greatly excel in a WCO. He can catch the ball out of the backfield, make people miss, and moves exceptionally well laterally. Game-breaking ability the Jets have lacked at RB since trading Leon Washington. 6 - Nick Moody - Thought this guy was a rising star at safety two years ago, but his stock plummeted over the past year as FSU moved him to LB in 2012. Physical enforcer at safety in the LaRon Landry and Kam Chancellor type of mold. Clearly more of a box safety than a center fielder, can absolutely lay the wood like Landry, and I believe can hold his own in coverage vs tight ends. Kam Chancellor was criticized in similar fashion, and he's turned out to be a great pick for Seattle. This guy plays a very similar game. 7 - Marquess Wilson - Again, loved him during the 2011 college season and thought he had a bright future. Tumbled down the board after walking out on Washington St after issues with Mike Leach. With his talent, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because Leach is a known jack-ass. Similar to Mike Williams a few years ago with Tampa, this guy has pretty massive talent and with his head screwed on right could be a very good NFL player. Roll the dice at this point in the draft, nothing to lose. UDFA - Da'Rick Rogers - I would have taken him as early as round 3 to be honest. Massive talent and excellent production at Tennessee before being dismissed from the team. Marijuana doesn't scare me off, and I kind of like that he's got an attitude. The Jets need some guys with hair on their balls who play with a chip on their shoulder. One of my favorite WR's in the class, think he has big time NFL potential. Dennis Johnson - Bowling ball RB in the mold of Michael Turner. Breaks an insane amount of tackles, is very hard to bring down, can make people miss or run them over, can catch the ball out of the backfield, and can contribute on special teams. Probably my favorite RB in the draft. Kenny Tate - LB/S tweener who was considered a first round prospect a few years ago. Always liked his game and felt he could be a swiss army knife on defense - cover TE's, stop the run as an 8th defender in the box, blitz, play traditional safety. He does have some stiffness to him, so if he doesn't work out at safety, you've got a very nice coverage linebacker on third downs who can also blitz. Rodney Smith - WR with physical skills to play in the NFL. Worth a flier, as he underachieved at FSU and could have a better pro career than college career. Roy Roundtree - Just always liked his game, had a knack for making big plays. A solid depth receiver who can fill in and spot start at the least. TJ Moe - Tough, scrappy, blue collar slot WR who can hopefully turn into the next Welker, Stokely,Amendola, or Chrebet. Greg Reid - Small, slight, and undersized but can possibly contribute as a playmaking nickel or dime back. Electric punt and kick returner immediately helps special teams in a Trindon Holliday type of manner. Didn't address the OL with this but rounded up some weapons at WR, sured up the secondary with a corner and safety, revamped the LB corps with an inside guy and an edge rusher, and added some playmaking to the RB position. I like Colon as one of the starting guards and would look into signing Jeff Otah to compete with Howard at RT. Bring in another guard via free agency to compete with Ducasse. I feel like guards are pretty easy plug and play guys - you can find them late or in free agency and cover them up pretty well.
1. Dee Milliner CB Alabama 1. Sheldon Richardson DT Mizzou 2. Geno Smith QB West Va. 3. Keenan Allen WR Cal 4. Chris Ivory RB (TRADE) 5. Bacarri Rambo S Georgia 6. Will Campbell OL Michigan 7. Da' Rick Rogers WR Tenn Tech I like the Winters pick, but Allen provides great value at 3, also would have rather went Safety with Rambo at 5.
1. Dee Milliner 1. Sheldon Richardson 2. Geno Smith 3. Brian Winters 4. Trade to New Orleans for Chris Ivory 5. Nick Kasa(the team has faith in Hayden Smith and I think they'd be a nice compliment) 6. Andre Ellington(too much value right here, kid has so much skill out of the backfield) 7. Tommy Bohanon
I'm not doubting his ability to make plays or contribute. It was the selection of a CB in the first place. Wilson was drafted in the first round a few years back, and this draft was very deep at CB. Why take a CB at all when you have a guy like Warmack, who was good value at 9 AND met a HUGE need, was sitting right there? That's what has me scratching my head. I thought I explained that pretty well in my OP, but may not have been clear enough.
