I agree 100% about Sanchez. NO QB contributed less to their teams success than Sanchez. Here is a nice stat of QB contribution to teams production over Sanchez's 1st 3 years per play. He came out last of course. But again I don't think drafting Sanchez should be held against the Jets scouts as they were against drafting him.

I'd never heard this before, you have a source for this or know where I could track down more on this?

There was an article earlier this year, a month or so after the season ended, talking about the 2009 draft. It said the scouting department did not want Sanchez and thought Freeman was a better prospect but that Rex was in love with Sanchez so that was the direction we went. It appeared to be no where near the dislike that the scouts had for Ghoulston.

Pull the article that shows Bradway hating on Brooks Bolinger, Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge and McElroy.

So given this, why isn't the entire Jets fan base excited about the Geno Smith pick? Sanchez has been the whipping boy for Jets fans for years, but nobody wants to replace him or all are satisfied with going into the season with a journeyman, a QB who can't play QB and is the NFL's biggest distraction, and a late round pick with a horrible arm?

I don't get Jets fans at all. Sanchez is the root of all evil, but let's not take the best QB in the draft with a second round pick and instead wait until next year, the supposed year of the QB. But I guess as Murrell 85 said, all these QBs are the same - Smith, Manuel, Nassib, Barlkley - all the same. It doesn't matter who you take or when.

Tell that to the Chargers after the Leaf fiasco, or Seattle after taking Mirer after Bledsoe went first, or Cleveland and Cincinnati for taking Couch and Akili Smith and not McNabb.

Was that true in 83? I guess Elway, Kelly, Blackledge, Eason, O'Brien, and Marino were all the same?

The Jets potentially upgrade the most important position on the team by taking a QB that many had going in the top 5-9 picks in the draft at pick 39 and get knocked by both Jets fans and the media??? Unbelievable.

Since we made seven draft selections in one year (not counting the fourth flipped for Chris Ivory) rather than spread over two, we have twice the potential value and much better odds of getting at least one hit. Plus we get a boatload of picks coming in 2014.

The premise of your post only has merit if Geno is a good bet to be a top NFL QB. Being the 2nd QB drafted and being drafted well after the 1st one was drafted it's hard to call him the best QB prospect in this class. Since he was bunched with guys who went in much later rounds it may well be this was a draft class that many NFL GM's see as producing backup QB's and guys to have throwing balls in camp?

Sanchez has only been the whipping boy for about a year and a half and only based on his actual play not some Haitian voodoo of evil that you eluded to in your post.

Geno has lots of potential issues, real issues in the minds of actual NFL GM's. If he pans out great but why be excited about drafting him if you don't believe he is going to develop into a top 10 NFL QB on a team with lots of needs.

I'm not knocking the pick but I don't see why Jet fans who are concerned should be slobbering over this pick?

Great point(s) indeed. I was only addressing the ones the OP put up.

Almost but not 100% accurate. Before the salary cap there was also rampant spending ala the early San Francisco dynasty. They had their draft picks but also threw a ton of money, for the era, at so called free agents. Tampering was rampant as well. It was not uncommon for a player, who was good, coming up at the end of his contract to be contacted well before the end of that contract. If someone sat down and did a salary by era comparison I would be willing to bet that the 49'ers of the 80's SMOKE the Yankees of today by comparison.

thank mezz that was kind of what i wanted to point out, not every guy is going to be a home run. they never are. i agree sparano was a terrible terrible hire and coach. i also dont think we have done a very good job judging talent and building teh draft board over the past number of years.

i figured i would use 3 years ago as thats what we all always say the point is to judge teh draft. granted thats probably a topic for june when things are a little dead but i decided to look at it now. i decided to look back at it because alot of people are in post draft hate mode and alot of people are in post draft love mode.

someone actually posted that we drafted 3 pro bowlers... i just wanted to bring a little bit of focus back to us all.

i will say as a 6th rounder slauson pick did work out. he did end up helping. if he were a 2nd rounder it wouldnt be a good pick but to get a guy in the 6th who plays is a good job.

A few months ago I posted every draft pick from like 2005 on and it was dreadful. We hit some homeruns like Revis and Harris but had some good finds like Brad Smith and Leon Washington but we've also had some terrible picks like John Connor and Vlad. The problem is we haven't had enough draft picks over the last 5 years to miss on as many picks as we have. It left less room for error and we are seeing the effects of that. Throw in overpaying for aging vets because we don't have the depth to allow them to walk.

I think a prime example of how bad the drafting was under Tannenbaum is just go back to last year. We cut half of our draft before the season started. That's fine if you are going 12-4 or 11-5 but this team was absolutely dreadful last year and we were cutting draft picks before training camp ended. That is just unacceptable.

I think we found some good players but I just question the motives behind selling this "BPA" but than drafting somebody like William Campbell and than Tommy Bohanan who were clearly not BPA. The one thing that made me happy about the draft was that not once did we trade up to grab this guy or that guy. For a rebuilding franchise with no depth that is a major no no.

I have to agree... look at those 2 years, we had a full draft between the 2 of them. you just cant have a draft with 3 and then one with 4 back to back years.

    its a killer

    It's really bad...

I look at Bradway's drafts and while not all the players panned out for the Jets quite a few of them are still in the league. The other thing is other than the Doug Jolley/Justin Miller/Mike Nugent debacle he hardly ever traded picks. Freaking Jonathon Goodwin a 5th round OL pick from 2002 is still in the leauge... amazing. Joel Dreesen a 6th round pick from 2004 is still around with Houston and has more TD receptions than all of our TE's combined.
(he and Keller actually have the same amount of career TD's) Difference is one was a 1st round guy we traded up to get the other a 6th rounder we never gave a shot.

    Then we look at Tanny...

His 1st draft was very very solid. Almost every player contributed in some way or another. Granted he whiffed big time on Schlegel in the 3rd and KC sucked Drew Coleman in the 6th was a scrappy player who helped us win a few games.

His 2nd draft... only 4 picks but Revis and Harris were great and good picks respectively. Problem was the ther two picks were a 5th and 7th and both players are out of the league.

His 3rd... Gholston major miss, traded up to get Keller who while a decent TE did not warrant a trade up to the 1st round. Dwight Lowery was JAG and the rest...whiff

4th was really when the wheels fell off

Sancheeze, and only two other picks

5th... only 4 picks. We got a Nickel CB in the 1st, shit in the 2nd, a really good KR and more shit.

The rest... Wilkerson is a stud but the jury still out on the others.

The way I look at the Jets recent draft history is pretty simple, they had the 6th and 5th picks respectively in back to back years. They ended up with Gholston and Sanchez. Thats one of the big reasons why the Jets are in the position they are now. The drafts before Gholston were very strong, and the 2011 and 2012 drafts seem promising.

Without looking at how the NFL on average does with their drafts, and I'm not sure what metrics someonewould yuse to determine that, I'm not sure you can say if the Jets have done extremely terrible or about average or above average.

That being said, I'm not expecting anyone here to put in the time to research every draft for every team from that year.

All your thread did for me was point out that

    1) The Jets had very few picks because they traded them away for players that didn't live up to the trade

    and

    2) They ended up drafting for need instead of BPA because they had so few picks.

    1. I wasn't excited about Geno pick.
    2. That doesn't mean I endorse Sanchez
    3. The primary reason for the ho-hum reaction toward Geno Smith is probably because we will have a vastly improved batch of QB prospects next year. I wasn't sold on Geno Smith myself (not that accurate at long range. not smart enough in my eyes, coming from lesser competition, etc.) specifically for that reason.
    4. Given that Jets won't be competing seriously this year, I wouldn't have minded watching Sanchez taking beating after beating. But Jets would have to do a good job of laying the foundation for the years coming in and on. I didn't want Geno Smith for this reason as well - I really thought Jets could have drafted a capable OLB prospect at round 2 that will play meaningful portion of the season. Unless Sanchez is kicked out (even though that is likely) Geno Smith won't play this season. (And again, for umpteenth time, I do not agree with starting rookie QB. There you go. I gave you three reasons why I hated Geno Smith pick. It is not a knock on the kid. It is just the circumstances around the team.)

Praise the whizkid Tannenbaum. Don't we all love him?

4 years. They both hit FA and were let walk. The players were decent, but they were not retained. It is not like they were washouts in the NFL. They are both currently employed elsewhere.

It's a great example why drafting for need instead of value early is a disaster.

This year we used FA to plug holes in the team. We drafted for value in the first few rounds, then added depth in needed in the last few rounds. We really need to continue on this path.

thanks abyz... i dont often start threads because i am not very good at starting them and often dont articulate my thought properly in the first post...

this thread has actually made me feel more confident with the boobs in the scouting department. to see how much things really did change when we started having tannenbaum run the draft is eye opening.

getting 7 or more picks is important, only about half of them stick. dont draft a guy who has to work out... other than a qb.

i still love what idzik did pre draft he filled a bunch of holes with decent players on the freeagent market rather than 1 or 2 guys. then he drafted what he thought was bpa, i would prefer best value but hey i cant complain too much.

and then he cut tebow and only 33 more days till sanchez is gone. im warming up to things again even though i wasnt a huge fan of our draft, i dont have to be only half the guys will be here in 2 or 3 years anyway.

    Idzik is a cap/management guy.

The scouts and head coach are exactly the same. Idzik is a more conservative, smarter Tanny. He's not a personnel guy though. And THOSE guys are all still here, as is the HC who knows DL and nothing else.
