I don't understand why everyone says we don't have a passrush. This team, even when it was the #1 defense a few years ago, never had a player even close to the top of the leaderboard in sacks. That's the way the defense is built. There's too much movement and adjustments for one player to consistently get one-on-one looks every passing down. ALso, the different looks that the defense presents scares quarterbacks into throwing the ball early. We do get plenty of pressure on the quarterback, it just doesn't result in sacks. That's just how Rex runs his defense. Sacks are not the end-all stat.

Maybe the Jets are thinking in sub defense with 4 down lineman they will play Coples-Wilkerson-Richardson-Barnes.

I do like Ricky Sapp's potential, I trust Rex's evaluation of Barnes from his time in Baltimore, but I was definitely hoping for a young edge rusher.

I was hoping for Tank Carradine when they took Geno Smith. Reminds of Suggs

Couldn't agree more...I love reading all the mocks and everyone's insights on this site every year, but next year plz lets just ignore the edge rushers in our mocks, it just gets my hopes up and for some reason we never draft them...it is absurd and to me it makes absolutely no sense...

It's going to be just like last year. Wilkerson and Coples got a lot of penetration on the inside, but the QBs knew where the pressure would come from and not come from, so they just stepped back or went outside the pocket knowing Jets didn't have a edge rusher.

Antwan Barnes and Ricky Sapp should be more than enough off the edge

We struggle to even get pressure outside of Rex's 1st year, in the past few years Tom Brady could have prepared a damn 3 course meal with the time he had back there

Harris is a prototype 3-4 ILB and Davis compliments him perfectly inside

    Our base defense looks like

    LE- Coples
    NT- Ellis
    RE- Wilkerson
    WLB- Barnes
    ILB- Davis
    ILB- Harris
    SLB- Pace

    Rotational Players

    NT Garay
    DT Richardson
    OLB Sapp
    OLB McIntyre
    ILB Mauga

We're fine, Rex and Thurman will make this work

I feel like our defense could be dominate just by adding a legitimate pass rush threat at OLB. That one missing piece prevents our good defense from becoming a great defense. For the past 4 seasons, it seems like an OLB has been on everybody's draft board for our number 1 pick, but we consistently fail to take one in the 1st round, even the 2nd and 3rd.

I'm not complaining, just posting an observation.

Rex schemes too much for just having a straight up pass rusher

of course its nice to have one just go at the QB every snap or when teams are trying to come back we can go 4 down and let them loose but Rex has a vision for the defense and he'll let that play out. No QB will see a clean pocket, we're gonna force them outside the pocket with Cro, Kyle and Dee locking down the receivers and our LB's picking up the tackles and sacks

It seems like we have something against drafting linebackers. I can't imagine why. I'd think they'd be the best players to draft, rather than overpay after they establish themselves. I'm surprised we didn't even get one but got 3 guards.

I mean they can't double team Wilk, coples,Sheldon, and Ellis at the same time

    Competition. Geno Smith.

3 guards is what gives the Jets the chance to establish a strong offensive line in front of their young QB.

If Sanchez had worked out behind what the Jets had last year then they probably draft 3 pass rushers in this draft and look for the competition to produce a great outside pass rusher.

You have to build from the inside out and building a great defense only to watch Smith learn from a shaky pocket wasn't in the cards.

If you're John Idzik coming in the building and you spend some time evaluating people like Vlad Ducasse and Caleb Schlauderaff you realized pretty quickly that the line had rotted some over the last couple of years. Austin Howard helped resolve the turnstile on the right edge last season but we have no idea if he is a long-term answer there.

    I agree with this.

Howard was decent last year and now has several people the can fight for his job right behind him. If he plays great this year and prices himself out of plans in FA next summer than we have one or two options the we have already had an extensive look at on the roster. Building depth like that along the oline is always a good thing.

Weren't we supposed to get Bruce Irvin last year with a trade from the steelers? I don't have a source but I remember hearing that. Either way, we don't have one now.

we have to scheme our fake pass rush... every other teams has good edge rushers except for us and its better...our ranking in yards per game is so over rated
