I have a feeling if they can't trade down, that's what happens. Ertz in the second round if he's there.
Well that would be one way of solidifying the value. It's just really important though that the Jets think about what they will do if Warmack becomes an All-Pro guard and they're forced to give him a $10M+ a year deal after 2015. Guards, no matter how good, just aren't worth being paid like an All-Pro tackle. With guards the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The big contract usually comes from the team they desert you for when their first contract has run it's course.
The thing is the new rookie salary cap structure is very friendly and makes taking a guard much more feasible. You can get a solid five years out of a guard and then when the time comes to re-up, go the route of the Steelers... either sign him to a good value contract, or let him walk and just replace him. It works, its just hard to imagine being Jets fans.
During a rebuilding period, I would rather have a player last more than 5 years on my team, though. That's what worries me about Warmack, but obviously the value is there.
I just don't like the idea of selecting a guard in the 1st round. Warmack and Cooper are very good and I wouldn't be upset if they took either one but this team needs speed and play makers. Obviously you need a good line to give the play makers a chance but Willie Colon will do fine if he can stay healthy, Austin Howard wasn't as bad as everyone makes him out to be, Mangold and Ferguson are still good players. Worst comes to worst, Jets can resign Brandon Moore for a couple years or draft a guard in the 2nd or 3rd. I just think these first two picks need to be explosive players.
if thats the worst case scenario, sign me up. i'd rather draft a guy we cant afford in 4 years than a potential bust.
The problem is that's the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is that we spent a top 10 pick on a guard who didn't turn into an All-Pro.
But that's the same best case scenario if a guard is taken late in the draft or the top 10. The Saints had to deal with that issue with Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks and they were drafted in the middle rounds. You just have a better chance of having to face that reality with a guy as highly touted as Warmack.
Normally i wouldn't be in favor of a G or an elusive WR in top half of draft. However, looking at these players specifically, the draft as a whole, and where some of our bigger team needs are, i think that puts Warmack, Cooper and Austin all into play as options. I would prefer any G pick be at the 13 instead of 9 though. I also like Jones quite a bit at 13. Ertz in round 2 would be awesome. I'm hoping that is the round 2 pick if it's not QB.
Switch Warmack with Eifert at 9 and take Warford at 39 and I think we are seeing eye to eye. Would not be surprised if we go Eifert/J. Jones/Warford. I don't think Warford is far off from Warmack/Cooper and I think he's going to make some team in early round 2 very happy....hope its us.
I'd be fine with this, personally. We don't need splashy picks, we need solid starters at a number of positions. Pick guys with a lower bust potential that can start and have an impact (in their role, anyway) immediately and for the next few years.
with ya - wouldn't it be something if one of the tackles (?johnson) is there at 9...... though its ballsy the jets could build 2/5ths of a powerhouse line tomorrow night taking johnson at 9 and cooper at 13. oh man.
I would be ECSTATIC if we draft Jarvis Jones! I can't believe his name is just lingering around like he's just another guy. This dude could easily be the #1 overall pick.
