With the Jets picking #16 last year, FootballGod14 put out a "History of the #16 Draft Pick" thread which I'd like to update for this year. as far as i'm concerned that list should just show people taken after 9 overall. That list is totally arbitrary - there are always guys that are busts or that succeed and singling out 9 and 13 is pointless.
Not sure what the info tells us, but it's interesting nonetheless. it's a bit of a crapshoot even with high picks. 2000 and 2003 stand out to me as really good years for 9 and 13.
exactly. this is meaningless, unless the OP's position is that there is something about the 9th and 13th pick that makes GM's pick players that don't live up to that position. the meaningful information is what great players that were first round projected players have been available at 9 and 13, regardless of whether the teams with those picks drafted them. that is the totality of the situation that the Jets face. if the Jets pass on two players that go 14 and 15 and become HOF'ers, the problem is the draft selection, not that there weren't great players available to them.
Gents, this was simply a general "FYI" point-of-interest list of players who were picked at #9 and #13, nothing more, nothing less. I looked up each draft from 1988 to 2012, wrote them down and typed out a list which I thought would be a simple, fun FYI read...no inferences, no agendas or 'points' to be made, just FYI.
The parallel(s) make no sense, given that in an average year these picks would probably equate to #18 and #28 But, for this reason, I appreciate the compiled list.
What I think you can draw from this is it makes sense to trade down. Volume of picks is better than trying to hit a home run near the top.
I seen a lot of good players taken at 9 and 13 throughout the years. I hope we get lucky and get two perennial pro bowlers (Geno Smith and the best available OLB)
