I had to watch that God damned Jets/Steelers game with a room full of Steelers fans. And since it was family, I couldn't hit them for being obnoxious.
The spike game was my very first Jets game that I attended live. I was in section 322 and we drove home without a word spoken.
Just in case you forgot: Parcells pulled a few fast ones on Carroll that year as well. (Long FG attempt!? - beep! It was a punt!) Carroll probably was bleeding from his you-know-what that year after receiving that much of butt-rape all season long.
Ive always argued that point. If the Jets rushed the passer, and connected, theyd have gotten an unsportsmanlike foul
The Fake Spike Game was the first game my father took me to when I was 14. That pretty much sums up my life as a Jets fan.
Not a drop. Boomer underthrew James Thirnton, who was wide open in the end zone, by 2 yards.pulling him onto the field at about the one where he was touched down by a DE..,Bowens I think.
I don't think it was the gentleman's agreement for why they didn't rush the passer, they hardly got lined up in time to even rush Marino. The Dolfags beat the Jets to the line and they weren't ready at all for the play. Spiking the ball would've done the Jets a favor. I hate Marino more than any QB to ever play the game, but it wasn't "essentially cheating" it was saavy football. Aaron Glenn got burned so bad on that, it was painful to watch. Such a shame because he was a good player for this team for many years. Probably the best NYJ corner prior to Revis, but it was tough to shake that out of memory.
If our defense blasted through the line and shoved Marino down as he spiked the ball to stop the clock, a thousand yellow flags would have covered the field. Don't say they would not have. So, that's a play where the QB gets to attempt a pass without a pass-rush. Marino took advantage of an assumed protocol. I hate him too, and this play is a major reason why. Is it savvy football to exploit a loophole in the rule? Perhaps.
Interesting. My seats that day were in the back of that EZ, so, the TE sliding on the ground shielded my view of the football. I never saw a replay or the telecast, so if you're correct about that play it changes my perspective after all these years. I wasn't too upset at the time since we still had a good lead, but it could have been 4 pts greater. Now I can blame Boomer more fully and completely for the debacle! Thanks for that.
Lol, when I called in and. Got Boomer to agree about Sanchez, he hung up on me, even though Carton wanted the question, and I was going to ask, who underthrew the TE, and tossed two 4th quarter picks, to allow Marino to make the fake spike play.
I was at this game as well. Aside from falling for the fake spike, Boomer Esiason really crapped the bed in the second half.
I finally got to meet Kenny O'Brien at the stadium this year, it was great. He was such a tough SOB and a class act. Man could he throw. I'll never forget when Coslet introduced Boomer at the presses and Boomer had the balls to hold up his number 7 jersey while O'Brien was STILL on the roster. No respect for a man who played his guts out for this team and unappreciative fans for 9 years. I despise Boomer for that alone. O'Brien was the best!
My first game was the Louis Oliver game when I was 14. 1989. Oliver crushed O'Brien at the goal line. We were up by 10 at the half. Guess we're in the same boat.
9 for the mud bowl......13 for Cleveland. I didn't go to school until Thursday after the Clevland loss. My mom threatened to call the truant officer. I never cried so hard in my life after that game. Straight on kicker Mark Mosely. I'll never forget Gastineau's late hit.
This was one of the worst games I have ever attended and I attended every game of the Coslet/Carroll/Kotite eras BUT looking back it was the best thing that could have happened to us. People act like we were some contender, the AFC stunk in 1994 and we were 6-5 when we blew that game. There's no guarantee we even make the playoffs, what the fake spike game did was make the team quit and force Hess to do something. hess made an asinine move to bring in Kotite but it made us hit rock bottom and forced Hess to make a bold move when we got Parcells. W/o the fake spike game we continue to go up and down like a yo-yo. One mediocre 8-8/9-7 type of year then a 4-5 win year, repeat. So really that loss set us up w/ Parcells who brought us out of the dark ages and back to respectability. He never finished the job but I will always appreciate what he did to make us a quality franchise again and we've pretty much been one ever since w/ the exception of a year here and a year there.
I used to sit in the corner of the EZ, I was about 9 rows up from where Ingram caught that ball. Truant office? did you used to take a time machine to school? How can you blame Boomer? I bet he didn't even know Kenny was still on the roster. It's not like they were ever going to retire #7, that goof up was on Coslet and the front office.
