Six things that will reinforce my belief that Idzik is the real deal, IMHO. I'm sure there are many other ales on this. 1 - We do not trade up on this years draft. Either we trade down and get picks or stay put. We begin the process to build our core through the draft first and foremost. 2 - Selections in the first 3 rounds yield immediate contributors that strengthen some of the glaring weaknesses of our team. We don't need projects in the early rounds with so many holes to fill. 3 - Competition is real. Best players play. We field a young, hungry, fast and competitive team that shows potential for the future. 4 - By mid season we know who will be or not be our future QB. The Sanchez dilemma must be resolved. 5 - Limit free agency to a few key moves to supplement the draft for depth and replace some of the positions, but not at the cost of impacting our future cap. We don't need any over the hill superstar bloated contract because he provides " team leadership". Give the young guns a chance to demonstrate if the have what it takes. Free us from cap hell. 6 - RR speaks a lot softer but carries a bigger stick with his team.
For Idzik to be successful we need a competitive team with upside that doesn't get blown out week after week and we need to feel good about our cap situation. How he goes about it is up to him.
GM success in 2013 is about laying the foundation for the rebuild by bringing in young talent with upside and using the draft to move the team forward for the first time in about 5 years instead of building for the year in front of us. 2014 is the year you can start thinking about things coalescing some and the talent beginning to jell. This year is all about getting the talent in house to start that process.
Simple. He has to put us in the best possible position to acquire a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback by the start of the 2015 season. Everything else is just window dressing. I'm not saying he has to actually acquire one (they aren't available every year, or even every two years), but he has to have at least put us in the best possible position (draft picks, under the cap, desirable place for a free agent to sign) to acquire one if one does become available.
I think the Sanchez decision is just as important as Revis. Boy, how the jets would be re-energized if he can find a way to cut/trade Sanchez after June 1 and put his butt fumble and ridiculous contract in their rear view mirror.
The draft will tell me everything I need to know. Up until now, I have no complaints, but the Draft is when Mr. Idzik lets the cat out of the bag. Also, 11 wins or we failed as an organization. Point blank.
If with our first pick we draft an player on Offense, I know Idzik is control and we are on track. A Mingo-like pick and we are still in shitsville. It's that simple.
I actually like Rex Ryan as himself he tried conforming and being the humble big stick carrying guy and that got him no where. In the first 2 years when he was talking smack and backing it up that is his style since he was with the Ravens. IMHO guys respond to a coach who gets them fired up. If his energy is high the players automatically feed off that . He dont have to go predicting a Superbowl but he can say Tom Brady we are coming for you
I disagree. Though I don't like Mingo, I would love to get Moore, Werner or (if we're lucky) Jordan assuming we deem the pick to be the BPA. At this point, though our offense is so much worse than our defense, we have to draft by BPA over need. There simply aren't very many offensive picks that are worthy of a top-10 pick this year. Aside from Warmack and a few other OL players, I see none. Therefore, picking defense does NOT automatically mean that we are "still in shitsville." Idzik can be in full control and still pick a defensive player.
It takes years to properly evaluate a GM. Sometimes you don't even realize how good he was in bringing in talent until after he's fired & new HC is coaching up that roster.
if he just takes the damned buc's offer of a 1st and second draft pick for next years draft giving the team the ammo needed to trade up for a franchise qb. without a franchise qb, teams are destined to be cellar dwellers for years to come. time to do the revis trade, there are no top qb prospects in this draft that the jets absolutely need the pic's for this year.
Setting the table for the future, which he's already started he just needs to continue. I'd also prefer not to pick a QB in this draft and fill other holes. We probably won't be a very good team next year regardless so we should have a high pick or if we don't we can use the added first and seconds from the Revis trade (which he should do for the 2014 picks) to trade up to nab one. This year may be painful but if we're filling some spots of need this year with draft picks while clearing some cap issues for next year we can hopefully add a starting calibre QB and even dip into free agency a bit more and try to make this a bit of a shorter turn around.
Agreed, if he thinks trading up for someone is better than staying put or moving down, AND that guy he trades up for turns out not to be a bust, then I'll be happy. Trading up is high risk high reward. Not something to be taken lightly but not something to be eliminated either.
Thanks for my morning flashback lol It'll be tough to measure Idzik's success until many years from now. However, in this case, we only need one year to determine whether this guy's the real deal. Before a year's up, we'll most likely know how things go with this year's draft, whether the Revis situation was properly resolved, and what's done with Sanchez. These three things should indicate whether Idzik's trending in the correct direction or not.
