After a pub chat, thought I'd bring it in here ... If we are going to be running the WCO a surprising front runner might emerge. Taking it that we won't draft Geno, but maybe someone else in the latter stages of the draft. Right now we have : Sanchez Tebow Gerrard McElroy Simms Now from what I've seen, Sanchez is actually quite good at the quick short range throws, but that's it, the longer he has to think the more liable he becomes. I'd also put Tebow in that bracket too, although he has a stronger arm, (less accurate though). But also has the scrambling ability , as we know, but never got to see. Gerrard : He's been out for so long its hard to know what we would be getting, but even in his latter years wasn't much better than Sanchez with poor ball security. Sims : Don't know enough about him. McElroy : Which leaves who I believe might emerge as the current best option. Alot of people say he's like Pennington, smart, makes good decisions (most of the time) but with a fairly weak arm, but with the WCO and type of throws needed may suit him well. Stands in the pocket well and can use his legs. If this is the crop of QB's we go into the season with, its fair to say that excitement won't be near the top of the list
I think it is McElroy for the reasons you said. The WCO involves making quick decisions and being accurate with your throws, which caters to both of McElroy's strengths. However I disagree with your assessment on Garrard, by all accounts he is very smart with his ball security. Also Tebow would be horrible for any type of offense.
There's no way we're going into the season with just those guys at QB. I have no idea where the Jets are drafting a QB but there are about 11 guys in this draft who would not cause the fans to throw their hands up on every mistake they make. Getting one of them in house to at least bill as a potential QB of the future is one of the few moves the Jets have to make from both a competitive and a marketing point of view. Garrard can hold down the fort if he stays healthy but the odds on that are less than 50/50 at this point. McElroy is a toy of the last boy. Nobody in the organization who is likely to be around by the next draft has any investment in him at all. He's a 7th round pick who got a brief cup of coffee because the starter blew out. He wasn't able to take that narrow opportunity and do anything with it. Everybody else in house at this point is a failed project at some level or another. The Jets are going to draft somebody even if it's just Sean Renfree in the 7th round. They can't go into next year with a 35 year old with an injury history trying to hold the fort and no other good options.
Gerrard at his best is better than everyone else on that list no matter what scheme you implement. But that's not the Gerrard Jets have picked up this offseason. I'd still go with him just to see how much he's got in the tank. If he's totally shot then he's not even worth carrying as a backup. However, if no more QB are acquired from FA or draft, I'd expect Sanchez to get first crack. No matter how many headlines state otherwise, he's the defacto starting QB until he forces Rex to pull him out again.
Seeing this full list makes me more convinced we will draft a QB in this draft. With the fragileness of Sanchez' psyche and of Garrard's body, we just cannot go into the season with these two as our only options. I wouldn't mind drafting two QBs this draft to replace Simms and McElroy. One of Smith, EJ, Wilson, Barkley early and a guy like Renfree late and we got some serious competition at the QB position.
The elephant in the room with an early drafted QB is whether or not that makes Sanchez a June 1st cut. If the Jets draft 2 it becomes a pretty high percentage chance that Sanchez gets cut as soon as it is feasible on the cap, which would be June 1st. It *is* important to have enough people for a real QB competition but nothing in Sanchez history with the Jets suggests that he could manage the dynamics present in having his certain successor in the same room with 3 or 4 other candidates also.
mcelroy is probably the worst option on that list judging by his lack of arm strength and mornhinwegs propensity for the deep pass...
I'm thinking if we draft Geno, Sanchez is a guaranteed cut. We go with Garrard until his body inevitably gives out and then hand the reigns to Geno. I think Sanchez gets one more year and every chance to win starting job if we draft any other QB, most likely 2nd and beyond.
What's Simms like? I can't recall seeing him play....he's kind of like a 2013 draft pic at this point.
To be very honest, this year, I'm looking forward to seeing our QB take shots down field to our receivers instead of opposing DBs.
I'm guessing that the minute the Jets think they might have the next guy in house they cut Sanchez at the first cap-feasible moment. Part of the rebuild process is moving on from the failures of the past and Sanchez is the biggest one of those still hanging around. People give Woody a lot of grief for the "we're in the entertainment business" comment but he was 100% right when he said that. He offered us a rare unvarnished view of professional football and the NFL.
For all you Sanchez haters, please quit displaying your cap IQ. There is NO WAY IN HELL Sanchez gets cut this year pre or post June 1. Next off season, Yes, unless Sanchez displays an unexpected ability, he is toast. This year, it's cheaper to keep her. SO all you're doing is wasting time and energy and making everything you post worth skipping.
Our current crop just makes me wince and am fairly sure there will be another QB(s?) thrown into the mix come TC. Problem with Gerrard is that he's been injured and out for 2 years, big ask no? Totally disagree. 1 year on as well, I expect GMc to make an impact. I think the best use of the WCO was Bill Walsh. This is Wiki's definition of WCO...
There's no difference on the 2013 cap between cutting Sanchez on June 1st and keeping him for the season. The only difference for the Jets is whether they have him available for the 2013 season or not. It is quite possible that having him available for the 2013 season is a bad thing compared to not having him available for the 2013 season. That would be in the form of negative pressure on ticket sales from having the person most associated with the Jets struggles the last two seasons still on the roster. Anybody who thinks Sanchez is a lock to be on the roster because the Jets have a sunk $12.853M cap cost on him doesn't understand the realities in play. If Sanchez does not present the real possibility that he will be a good QB this year by June 1st he is probably toast. The money isn't going to do that because it is guaranteed. The cap ramifications aren't going to prevent that because they are already a sunk cost. The only thing that is going to keep Sanchez on the Jets this year is if they come to the conclusion that his likely performance warrants keeping him. For the last 18 months or so the survey says no.
Yea but Morningwood isn't Walsh and he runs a different flavor of the WCO. He DOES love to go deep and McElroy is not an NFL QB. I'd bet dollars to donuts that he will not be in the mix for the starter job and may not even make the team. Also - Sanchez has terrible accuracy with the short ball and Tebow is even worse. Not sure how we could see things so differently.
The new WCO isn't the same WCO of old. But David's our best option on the roster regardless of what system is in place. We brought him in to compete with everyone else, (if healthy) we'll now have to bring in someone else to compete with him. Because no one on our current roster will.
