per ESPN The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, a league source confirmed to ESPN.com's John Clayton. Terms of the trade, which can't officially be completed until March 12 when the 2013 league year begins, weren't immediately available. The trade agreement was first reported by Fox Sports' Jay Glazer on Twitter. Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick, lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick while sitting out with a concussion but was professional at every turn and continued to mentor his replacement. Before his injury, Smith had completed 26 of his last 28 passes -- including going 18-of-19 for 232 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a "Monday Night Football" win at Arizona on Oct. 29. He then sustained a concussion in the second quarter of the 49ers' next game, a 24-24 tie against St. Louis on Nov. 11. Smith sat out the next game as Kaepernick dazzled in his debut as an NFL starter, beating the Bears handily at home on "Monday Night Football." Smith didn't start again last season. The 28-year-old quarterback has thrown for 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 80 career games.
Thank God it wasn't the Jets. And man, the 49ers are going to be loaded. Awesome trade for San Francisco.
And a high 2nd rounder at that! I like Smith and think he can be very solid in the right system.....but anything more than a 3rd rounder is too much IMO. Sent from my LG-P999
I just looked at the Chiefs' forums.. some fans are excited for the trade, others aren't. One guy made the argument that Smith and Cassel are in really similar situations when they came to KC.. another guy said that the difference is that Smith had won in the playoffs while Cassel hasn't. My argument is, why didn't they give us a 2nd for Sanchez? He's won in the playoffs.
3rd rounder reaching for me to be honest. 4th rounder is where I placed his value but they left the Stratosphere with a 2nd rounder, along with giving up a similar picks next draft I hear.
Plus Sanchez doesn't have anywhere near as good a supporting cast as Smith has had on his good years to keep improving. And Sanchez doesn't have the coaching that Alex had.
Definitely glad that we weren't involved in this one. I guess the Cheifs really weren't sold on any of the QB picks at the combine. Considering the value Smith got maybe that boosts Tebows value to like a 7th rounder?
I will be the happiest fan on earth if the 49ers can take a boatload of picks and grab Revis away from the Jets.
Me too I hope they do it so we end up heaving tons of pick instead of dealing with another Revis holdout.
They made me pretty happy in their most recent game and manhandling the all-mighty Jets. But nice try. Back to the thread topic now...
