*yawn* "In October 2011, Jeffress endorsed Texas Governor Rick Perry for president, then went on to claim that Islam, Mormonism and Judaism are heretical religions “from the pit of hell.”" I like how the article title managed to pull "anti-Semitic" out of that. Mormons and Islamists I guess are lesser animals? Also, since when is it "Anti-whatever" to say that all religions except your own are heretical? Isn't that usually the point?
Big difference between heretical (implying ignorance without necessarily a charged connotation) and "from the pit of hell" (implying evil)
It's going to be fun watching this thread to try and guess which of you haven't darkened the door of a mainstream conservative religious denomination in a long time, or ever. There is nothing newsworthy about this story, as most conservative denomination churches hold pretty much the same positions as some (not all) of the ones mentioned in the article. And note that when I say "conservative" denominations, I am not talking about politics, I'm talking about Baptists, vs. Methodists/Episcopalians and a few others being non-conservative denominations. Of course the media will try to make this into a big deal since it has to do with Tebow, but just because the media claims something is extreme or "hateful" doesn't mean it is. If those positions are hateful, then a large part of the American population is "hateful".
The article itself is a logical fallacy. It's like writing a headline saying Woody Johnson endorses Foot Fetishes because he went to the beach with Rex Ryan.

I have to say, I've never met a Baptist myself I didn't virulently dislike. Maybe not "flaming pit of hell" dislike, but definitely a healthy virulence.
Well doubt that Tim is anti-semetic at all. But it makes it sound like he is speaking at that Westboro controversial so-called Baptist Church in Fla!
I read some of the follow on articles about this, and it's sort of taking what that Pastor said out context -- he was addressing whether a huge "mega-church" ought to be the goal, whether churches ought to be focusing on bringing in huge numbers of people. He said the message is not one that should be popular with huge throngs of people -- and that's when he said Mormans, Muslims were a heresey. He didn't say the same thing about Judaism (the article is wrong about that). He said something about the "three most important Jews in the bible" say that Judaism won't save you. Anyway -- same point as others have made here. When you boil it down, it's no different than something 1,000 other pastors would say.
When you boil it down Jews, fags and Muslims will produce just as much nitrogen as devout Christians.
This whole thing is just an attempt to make a mountain out of a mole hill and paint Tebow as some sort of a bigot. I've seen little to make me think this, though this isn't the only organization he has supported that is outspoken against gays, etc. (Focus on the family for one.) At worst, this was just bad judgment on his part. Your analogy doesn't quite work here. If he went to the beach with this pastor, you could make that case. But he actually took part in an activity with that organization itself and spoke there. A quick google check before giving a speech there should have given him pause on how that might affect his image. Of course, it is possible he actually supports those views too. But that is all speculation. His fanatical fanbase really doesn't know any more than I do on that though. But if he's trying to distance himself from being mistaken as being a supporter of those views, then he probably should choose his speaking engagments a bit more carefully.
Westboro isn't in Florida, it is in Kansas. Not that it matters. Gainesville has its own crazy religious bigots... Dove World Outreach. About the same, the guy that was going to publicly burn the Koran... went over real well.
