If 'Fats' could be desperate/realistic/humble enough to sign a similar deal as Hayden Smith, ie we pay him peanuts (200-300k for a year) and can be cut at any time, I wouldn't mind tbh. This would be for a dedicated and heavily monitored spot on the practice squad where he would get a final 12 months of his football career, a true last chance (you'd expect him to realize he must grab it and not throw it away again). The downside is you lose a spot on the practice squad, along with the time and mentoring you'd have to allocate in order to provide him with the best tools to turn into his potential. The upside, and there's basically no chance for this, but IF he'd grab this opportunity with both hands, become a physical and weight room freak, a Big Ben 3.0 - we might've had a couple of fun years ahead of us.

The Jets are simply not a good fit for Russel and Russel is not a good fit for the Jets. The ideal team for Russel (assuming unlikely as it is that he could make a NFL roster) should be one with an entrenched veteran where he can spend a year or two sitting learning and rebuilding his reputation and skills. With the Jets Russell would be part of the circus and would not be allowed to fade into the background and await an opportunity. From the Jets perspective they do not need anything that makes them look more clownish than they have been the last few years. Even if Russel is better than any QB on the roster (hard to imagine a QB that could be worse than Sanchez) the Jets do not need the distraction. The new FO needs to make a point that the circus is over and the Jets are moving in a positive direction. Now if the Jets obtained a clear cut starter for 2013 like Flynn or Alex Smith or even Geno Smith and picked up Russell close to camp starting to compete with Sanchez (if he is still on the team) and McElroy for a roster spot it may not be that bad. But now is not that the correct time for such a move. The media would descend up on the Jets and it would be ugly.
