Thanks for this post, I really didn't know much about the guy but I actually learned quite a bit from this post. I don't knwo much about the CFL other then the fact that Las Vegas somehow had a team in the CFL once... The LV Posse. There actually used to be a mural around town..
I'd think scouting in a league where you have to pick the mediocre player out of the weak is much more difficult than picking an elite talent from mediocre.
Still plenty of great GM candidates in the process. Ross...Gamble..Dorsey...Gaine..Popp...Cohen...others Smartest decision...taking the proper time and due deligence to get the right man
Now this would be a great hire for you guys... A guy that knows winning and is from outside the organization... The only bad part is that when he starts to suck, TGG will be filled posts mocking his last name...
Huge CFL fan here. Jim Popp is by far the best GM in the CFL. Every year the Als lose players and every year he is able to seamlessly replace them. Haven't heard of any salary cap issues that he has had and like someone mentioned he has had to juggle with the Canadian player ratio, which he has managed without problem Very good talent evaluator. Would be an excellent hire in my opinion
Thanks for the info. Many people will laugh at the thought of a CFL GM, but honestly I would be behind this. I would like this a ton more than promoting Cohen. This guy can obviously spot talent and does it on a regular basis. Im sure he would love nothing more than to pick from the pool of players the NFL has at hand. Maybe he can even bring some "diamond in the rough" players from the CFL. Im sure there's a few players there that could compete on this level. Also, he was supposedly the runner up for the Colts GM spot so its not like we are the only team branching out to him.
There have been Alouettes in the past (at least one that I recall still on the roster) turn down NFL opportunities to stay in Montreal because of the organization led by Popp and Marc Trestman (head coach). Popp could likely get some of those guys to at least try out for his team in the NFL.
4.5 million. Also, as I previously mentioned, they require a percentage of the team to be Canadian. So with limited money and a handcuff on the roster he has managed to stay competitive for over a decade.
I'm really liking this Popp guy, I just don't know how much it means that he's kept his team at the top in a league consisting of eight (!) teams - out of which six (!) get into the playoffs. Any Canadian can reassure me?
But you missed the key words... get them prepared for their pro days.. most of those guys had stock that jumped after their Pro Day... some of them were probably mid round guys like Wheeden and Osweiler who went extremely high.
Same with Tebow. Believe it or not Tebow DID improve his throwing motion between exiting college and entering the NFL. Albeit still not a great throwing motion, but still improved.
For the last 3 or 4 years I've been expecting the Als to fall off. Keep thinking their player turnover of key positions is too great. Every year they win their division. Popp has earned his praise
Well if he is so used to continuously upgrading/ filling his roster well he'd be well suited for this position. Yes its a promotion, But until he's in it, No-one will see if his skills are transferable
