no..the reason he signed a cheap one year incentive laden deal is because he had major health concerns....to say we cant franchise the guy after one year knowing full well our cap situation, thanks to tannybum's terrible contract and cap dealings is just horrid....this is 100% another feather in tanny's cap.

Ed Reed signed a $7mil a year deal. Antrel Rolle signed a $6.5 mil a year deal. Eric Weddle signed an $8mil a year deal. These are not injury prone safeties and are some of the top safeties in the NFL right now imo. Landry will probably get around the $6-7mil mark with some incentives imo.

If I were the GM, I would give him a contract similar to what Tanny gave with of course more money and years. I would consider like a 4 year $26 deal. Deal would include $4m signing bonus, first two years of guaranteed salary, a weekly game bonus of $100k ($1.6m a yr, $3.2m for the first two yrs) and base salaries of:

    2013: $1m (cap charge $3.5m)
2014: $1m (cap charge $3.5m, cap hit if released $4m)
2015: $5m (cap charge $6m, cap hit if released $2m)
2016: $9m + roster bonus of $3m (cap charge $13m, dead money if released $1m)

Basically, the 4 year $26 mil contract would really be a 3 year $14mil deal or a 2 year $9mil deal, all with $6mil of guaranteed money.

Does anyone else agree with such an offer?

No, I agree with nyjunc. If it was Tanny's choice to include the clause, or to not include it, which one do you honestly think he would pick? Fact is, Landry wanted to prove himself to the NFL that he's still a top safety that can has not slowed down after his injuries. He gave up maybe a couple mil for the year just to prove himself. In return, he didn't want the Jets to tag him because he wants to sign a long term deal with much more guaranteed money than the tag itself...and that's why he wanted to be an unrestricted free agent and get the max value for himself. Ever wonder why he said he's not going to offer any hometown discount?

being franchise tagged is far from a hometown discount....if you sign guy that wants to prove himself, and you are the team giving him that chance we in turn should have had a chance to franchise him in a cap strapped year and then sign him long term when our cap opens up in 2014. bottom line its a terrible job by tannybum.

I'm not sure if I agree with the $, as i'm not too up on that stuff, but I'd kill to see him back in 2013.

This is where the cap issues start to come into play. Both safeties need to be replaced as well as Pace and Scott. That takes a big bite out of the defense.

I liked Landry, but i wouldn't mind letting him walk if he wants a big contract. You don't need a big time safety to win. The D was pretty good a couple of years a go with a guy like Leonhard back there.

Right now, there are holes to fill at QB, RB, the O Line, Linebackers. All these positions are more important than safety IMO

Saw a tweet this morning that Pace will most certainly be cut saving us $8.5 million next year so maybe some of that can be thrown at Landry.

We'll also get a compensatory pick in 2014, if Landry signs elsewhere this season, no?

....if him signing elsewhere for a big contract, means us landing a 4th-5th round pick, that's worth keeping in mind as well.

I highly doubt we get any compensatory picks in 2013. We'll be signing way more guys than losing guys to big contracts worth a comp pick. Greene, Keller and Landry might be the only ones. Most others will probably get minimum wage (which doesn't constitute a comp pick). We'll be releasing a few players for cap purposes so those don't count in the comp pick calculation.

Comp pick is basically losing more players to other teams with salary higher than min wage that signing FAs higher than min wage. Even if we have five guys leaving and signing decent contracts, Im pretty sure we'll be picking up several FAs ourselves to replace safeties, OL, LBs, TE and possibly HB/FB.

Landry is not fragile. Pennington was made of glass, not Landry. Landry goes a thousand miles an hour at all times and throws his body as hard as he can at everyone. Thats why he got injured.

landry wasn't signing a deal w/o the franchise clause unless it was a multiear deal with good $. there was no way around this.

Just be happy you got a full year out of this guy. The next team won't be so lucky.

No way would I get into this guy for 3 years. The Jets are already on the hook for too much dead weight.

Let someone else overpay this guy. He's a liability in coverage, even though he's a beast in the box. He'll be on IR two of the next 4 seasons. The Jets got an unlikely bargain for one year on a stopgap, that's all this deal was.

    I concur with this statement.

He had a good year, but it's not the end of the world if/when he leaves, I certainly wouldn't overpay for him at all.

Then we should have let him. I see zero value in signing a guy with Achilles issues who if he stays healthy we can't keep anyway. Makes zero sense.

If our O didn't fall apart health wise laron could have been the difference btw making or missing the playoffs, it was a worthy gamble.
