Mike T. is the GM. It's his job and responsibility to make sure that players that he signs don't suck, regardless of what Rex Ryan or anyone else says.
I agree, but if Tanny was really relying on his coaches that much for personel decisions the some (a lot?) of that heat has to go on Rex too. If Rex had that much input it really makes me think twice about signings like mason that I previously blamed like 90% of on Tanny.
This has been the most demoralizing 6-10 or 7-9 year I can imagine. That said, I'm still on the fence on whether I actually want Tannenbaum fired. Depends who the replacement is. For the bulk of the tenure, he's done a pretty solid job. However, the last two offseasons could be considered fireable offenses. The Jets need to get a clear vision on a plan though. It seemed like the Jets had a plan, but then a couple drafts were busts, so the young talent base eroded. That's on Tannenbaum and the scouts. Whatever is going on, they have to stop Manish's leak.
Don't forget wanting Nmandi Ashomogua -- whoever wanted him, Rex or Tannenbaum -- which would have been ANOTHER personnel disaster. The guy has STUNK in Philly. Cannot believe we wanted him on the team, and also wanted to spend ALL our FA $$$ on him, too. Unreal.....
When you restructure contracts to push money back into future years, the result is the numbers catch up and create the mess the Jets have. Being 20 mil over the cap, having only 37 players under contract and virtually no depth is a direct result of Tannenbaums creativity. Why the Jets would consider keeping him is beyond me.
Put him in Accounts Payable. Pencil in Bradway for Mail Room reassignment. Revamp the scouting department. Beat the bushes for highly regarded talent evaluators and throw some lucrative johnson&johnson 'non-cap' money at 'em. Do NOT let Tannenbaum or Rex within 100 miles of the war room - leave that to the proven 'football guy' talent evaluators.
Mr.T wasn't such a dummy when Mangini was there. Rex went to the 2 AFC championship games with Eric's players. Stop keep mentioning those 2 AFC championship losses as a reason to keep Rex. They lost both of them and haven't made the playoffs since. The team is a joke with all of the sideshows. Fall guy: We know how Woody Johnson operates. If his team has a bad year, someone's head has to roll. This time, it'll probably be GM Mike Tannenbaum. He has made some poor decisions (the Tim Tebow trade, to name one), but anyone who thinks he made these moves without seeking input from Rex Ryan is mistaken. Tannenbaum doesn't have a scouting background, so he leans heavily on Ryan. At times, people in the draft room -- the talent evaluators -- feel like their voices aren't heard, according to sources. Do you think it's a coincidence the past three No. 1 picks were defensive players? Ryan can be very persuasive. In the end, Tannenbaum has the final say, so the decisions are on him, but he had plenty of help with them. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/ Rex and Tebow have the same agent. Rex and Tony have the same agent. The Tuna has the same agent as Rex,Tebow and Tony. The Tuna is close with Mike. Rex and Mike are tied together. Rex has major say in personnel.
he has done a lot of good work but the Sanchez extension should rank as one of the worst decisions any professional sports organization has made in recent years, and for that I suspect he will lose his job. shame but such is life.
I would not be opposed to having Tannenbaum and Rex back for one more run in 2013 as long as Mark Sanchez was let go of. That being said, it is Tannenbaum and Rex who made the bone headed decision to move up and take Sanchez, so their asses need to be on the line for that and with Rex being the media darling he is, of course Woody is going to ax Tannenbaum before Rex, even though axing a GM and keeping a HC is pretty damn stupid.
I don't put much weight in this article, old boys club (Front Office) looking out for each other. Same sort of lack of account ability goes on board of directors for large companies. They all sit on each other boards and look the other way for each other. Still it's surprising Tanny is that well regarded. Random draft pics by a computer would have fared better and we wouldn't have to pay the computer large sums of money.
Perhaps the non-Jet executives want Tanny to stay because they know we'll continue to flounder with him at the helm.
If you took a look at the Jets cap situation, you can see they could go from $20m over to about $40m under with some very simple moves. For example, did you know that if they cut Jason Smith, they save $12m off next years cap? That being said, I think the Jets will do something with Tannenbaum. If they can bring in a good personnel guy and keep him & Rex, I think they will go that way, but it could be at least 50/50 that the Rex andTanny are both gone.
If the scouts are scouting well and the coaches are making the picks, then what is Tanny's role in the organization? Overpaying everyone and mismanaging the cap?
He is a good cap guy, but when it comes to personnel he is terrible. He may not have to be fired but his role in bringing in talent has to change.
wow did seattle screw us twice in the same draft....amazing stuff that comes out months later about the draft. wishing i was a fly on the wall
In theory if you got a guy with more of a scouting background he wouldn't have to rely on Rex as much for an evaluation. Should be a very interesting couple of weeks but the main thing should be whoever is brought in has to have the ability to have the final decision.
